Women who run riot talked about women: The two-day session on ‘Women in India: Reconstructing women’s history’, organised by The Aligarh Historians’ Society, as part of the Indian History Congress (IHC), once again brought to the fore the contentious issue of women’s entry in Sabarimala, as also the issues of gender equality and exploitation of women[1]. Parvathi Menon, who presented the paper on ‘Sabarimala and Women’, said that though women used to enter Sabarimala in the past, and the attitudes towards menstruating women entering the temples were flexible as late as the 1980s, it was still a taboo[2]. The taboo against fertile women entering the Sabarimala precincts was given legal sanction as late as 1991 through a Kerala high court judgment, she pointed out. After the apex court verdict in 2018, permitting women’s entry, the controversy took political tones and a group took the battle to the streets. “The arguments being advanced by defenders of the ban on childbearing age women entering the temples, that Ayyappan is a celibate god, are of recent origin in the centuries-long development of Ayyappa worship, and reflect the mainstreaming of the worship into the Vedic period,” she said.

The Marxist interpretation of women-only encourage Islamic fundamentalism: Without changing mindsets, especially in respect of the new and shackling obscurantisms in the form of personal laws and superstitious beliefs, the gain that Kerala has achieved in great measure through public action towards women’s equality will be eroded, she added, underscoring the contradictions in the Kerala society and the denial of self-reliance for women in the man-woman relationship or in the family. Shalini Shah, in her paper, ‘Engendering female body, sexuality and desire in the Sanskritic tradition’, also discussed the issue of Sabarimala, in the context of female sexuality. “In the masculinist world, ‘sexual desire’ is a male prerogative. Women can be the object of desire, but not a desiring subject themselves,” she pointed out, adding, “We thus see that only a specific kind of woman was objectified in the masculinist discourse as sexually alluring. So, from an entirely male point of view, it is safe for the women of a specific age to enter the precincts of a Brahmachari deity.” Charu Gupta, in her paper, said feminist historians have underlined that both social reforms and nationalism have had an ambiguous relationship with the gender question. The presentations that lasted for two days had 18 papers that explored various aspects of women’s identity, based on myths, legends and social reality across the world. However, they could not discuss anything on Muslim women Triple Talaq Act, progress of them and other minority women.

A Mohammedan minister came to speak for Mohammedans: Minister for higher education K T Jaleel has said no government has ever succeeded in detaining or degrading the minorities[3]. Addressing a special session on the concluding day of the Indian History Congress (IHC) here on Monday 30-12-2019, he said the history shows that the minorities contributed immensely in the progress of the respective nations and society[4]. “French historians noted that France began to decline after the banishment of minorities from their country. If Jews had not been displaced or murdered massively by Hitler, Germany would have become a super economic power of the world,” he said. “The recent CAA, NPR and NRC are imposed hurriedly as part of the political agenda,” he said, adding that historians have to protest and condemn moves against a minority community. However, he did not make any whisper as to how the illegal migrants of Myanmar, Bangladesh etc., have been affecting the Kerala society, polity and economy. He could not discuss about the ISIS problem that is encouraged by the infiltrators from Pakistan, Afganistan etc. In other words, the IHC historians have been colluding with the politicians in this way, to spoil the academic proceedings. Thus, it is evident that the IHC gang and the communists of Kerala have decided to host IHC at Kannur and exploit it, but, the ugly events exposed their hidden agenda bringing bad name to them.

Resolutions passed as usual and none bothers: IHC concluded and deplored the detention of four delegates following the commotion at the inaugural ceremony on December 28 and called for the defence of the composite culture of the country[5]. The resolution passed in this connection also requested the state government not to share the details of the detained people to any central or other agencies[6]. “Confident that the Kerala state government is vigilant in fulfilling its promise of protecting the civil liberty of all citizens, the Indian History Congress hopes that the state government will (a) duly train the police personnel in managing security, and (b) ensure that the personal details of the individuals detained are not communicated to any central or other agencies,” it said. Many resolutions at the IHC were in connections with the present political turbulence over CAA, Jammu and Kashmir and related issues. The IHC without knowing the legality and their local standi, they go on pass such resolutions for the last 35 years, but, none bother and bothered about it. When B. R. Grover was alive, he was the only person to point out their vanity, futility and useless nature of resolutions. As IHC has been losing credibility year by year and now proven to be a den of rowdies, the coming years might witness strength coming down. Moreover, their arrangements of transport, accommodation and food have also been coming down, while the delegate fees increasing. Thus, the delegates were also not satisfied in all aspects.

The agenda of opposing ruling government exposed: Expressing concern over the adverse conditions for research and educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, owing to the official closure of internet and libraries, and non-functioning of educational institutions since August, the IHC, in another resolution, called upon the authorities to lift restrictions on internet and take measures to restore normalcy in J&K. It also condemned the police action in some universities following protests against CAA. The resolution said it is conscious of the adverse effects such violent acts will have on academic freedom and pursuit of research and instruction. “Political figures should refrain from inaccurate statements as the one about India having been under ‘foreign rule for one thousand years’ as if all Muslim rulers were foreigners,” read another resolution. Disagreement with the National Education Policy, another resolution said the move to infuse ‘heavy dose of Sanskrit’ at all levels of education including science and technology, social science and Indian system of knowledge… will make education not only static but unequal and unjust for many. In another resolution on ‘built heritage,’ it said the Indian heritage is still in danger, and there were efforts to alter the authenticity of monuments that have affected their historicity. IHC president Amiya Kumar Bagchi, secretary Mahalakshmi Ramakrishnan and treasurer Burton Cleetus denied any protocol violation on their part at the inaugural ceremony.

Questions raised and posed to historians, history students and related persons: Having seen the behaviour of the historians, the general public may raise many questions:

  1. The IHC historians have been reportedly highly educated, elite, emeritus and so on, why then, they behaved in this way?
  2. Why the well-learned professors, HODs, and others raised hands, turned their faces ugly, shouted badly and virtually run riot before others?
  3. Definitely, they must have known what is decency and decorum to be maintained in such functions. They have invited Governors, Chief Ministers, Prime Ministers etc., and therefore, treating the same class differently raises the credibility, accountability and responsibility.
  4. What the youngsters, young students and others would think about these historians and others? Or they giving field-training in this way to become rowdy-historians in coming years.
  5. Would they want to nurture, teach and bring up good students or rowdies, raising slogans, disrespecting the authorities, fighting with the police and so on?
  6. The “two women delegates” were actually, verifying the genuine nature of the members and giving clearance. However, on 27th, they were virtually harassing the delegates because of their technical fault [they are not getting the connection or some issue]. How then, these two could run riot?
  7. Or, were the organizers planned to use these women as a front to create a problem and get undue publicity?
  8. Had all involved been really interested in history, research and related areas, they would not have indulged in such “unhistorical,” un-academic and unruly activities. Yet they did – proved that they had bad intentions.
  9. Historians have not done their duty for the last 70 years and therefore, they cannot do anything with the Acts and laws of the land. Therefore, it is better they concentrate in history and save their honour instead of poking nose in politics etc. Would they learn a lesson or do otherwise?

Delegate fees, accommodation etc: The 80th session of Indian History Congress was held at the Kannur University Campus. On 27th itself, many delegates, evidently from long distance, from northern states started arriving by various trains.  For varied reasons, there was a delay at every point and slowly, the registration went on and then, they were accommodated at different lodges and hotels situated near and as well as 30 to 40 kms away from the Kannur University campus. Rs 3500/- was charged and many felt, it was excessive. The kit was not given, as they were not ready. Moreover, the accommodation given was not satisfactory. It is evident that they were impartial in allotting accommodation to delegates and thus tried to confuse with fee structure and other conditions as follows. This is mentioned because the circulars of the IHC had threatened the delegates with different circulars. One read as follows[1]: “IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS”:

  1. Last date for receipt of Delegate Fee: The last date for the receipt of delegate fee (Rs 3,500) is 1 st December, 2019 by DD, and 20/12/2019 by online payment. Delegates are requested not to delay payments of delegate fee beyond the last date because accommodation will be arranged on the basis of the delegate fees already received. If any delegate, despite this plea, arrives at the venue without payment of delegate fee in time, he or she will have to find accommodation on his or her own, while paying us Rs. 1500/- for the kit and meals. Alternatively, the member can pay Rs.5000/- as delayed delegate fee, provided we can find accommodation, without guaranteeing it[2].
  2. Delegate Fee Remittance: Delegate fee of Rs. 3500/- can be paid via the online registration cum payment link https://forms.gle/gZTQf6eveRrf8oDU6 (credit card, debit card, RTGS, NEFT, Paytm) or by Demand Draft. If any delegate would prefer to make his or her own arrangements for accommodation, and only requires the kit and the food facilities, the payment will be Rs. 1500/-, as stated above.
  3. All payments must be in the name of “Local Treasurer” payable at SBI, Fort Road Branch, Kannur-1, if you are paying by Demand Draft; you can fill the online form and insert your Demand Draft details, and send the DD to the address given below with your membership no., full name, and other details. Or, you may fill in the form sent with the Local Secretary’s circular and speed-post or courier a copy of it with your Demand Draft to “Dr P. Mohandas, Local Secretary, 80th Session, Indian History Congress Organizing Committee, HRDC Buildings, Kannur University Campus, Kannur 670002 – KERALA.”
  4. Please do not forget to mention your name, mobile number, and membership number at the back of the DD. The Local Secretary will NOT accept cheque payments of any kind, including multi-city cheques. We also strongly recommend the online payment option.
  5. The confirmation of the payment of the delegate fee must reach the Local Secretary not later than 28 November 2019.
  6. Reception: The Reception Desk in the Kannur University campus, Thavakkara, Kannur, Kerala, will be active from the morning of 27th December, 2019, to 28th December afternoon. The Help Desk at Kannur Railway Station and Kannur Airport will be active from December 27th morning to 28th afternoon. While transport will not be provided to the University, the volunteers will be at the Station and Airport to help arrange for transport.

All these show that how they have been very meticulous in collecting money from the delegates, but, they were not sincere in reciprocating by giving reasonably good accommodation, food etc., as could be known from the subsequent events.

The academic session, paper presentation etc: On 27th, after registration done from morning, the kit was not given. When the delegates came for dinner by 7 pm, message was sent to all to bring “food token” coming for dinner by 7 pm. Their timing was horrible, perhaps, within a minute all 3000 delegates get their kits and come there with token for food. Naturally, many delegates did not get their kit-bag, as some of them left their fee-receipts in the rooms themselves. Initially, the people at the “Food-tent” were adamant in their attitude by insisting tokens. One person was not agreeing with the on-line registration with accommodation details and other messages received in cell-phone and shown to him. He was so stubborn and posed and as a strict disciplinarian, but, later he was allowing others who did not pay delegate fees also. Coming to paper presentation also, they were not definite about, as no “list of papers” was given in the kit. When the asked on 30th morning, surprisingly, the declared that all copies were exhausted. Really, it is a wonder how thousands of copies could vanish. The fact could be that purposely, they printed fewer copies. Thus, the brought out one[3] “Supplementary paper list.” Then, another “Supplementary list-2” was released[4]. Then, “Final list” was released[5]. So, it is not known, why this confusion and all. It is evident that the person-in-charge of papers received had not done his job properly. Yet, the sectional presidents were harassing the paper presenters without following the sl.no.order.

IHC, the kit

The so-called kit: The kit is nothing but a small cloth bag containing a pencil and sharpener with a scribbling pad. Of course a souvenir and a booklet “Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II and Tuhfat ul Mujahideen – A Revisit to a Historical Text: After 437 years” of Dr K.K.N.Kurup. There was a program card about inauguration.

  1. The booklets of addresses sectional presidents,
  2. list of papers,
  3. pen and
  4. other required materials were not found.

Really, it is surprising that for payment of Rs.3500/-, the kit given had been in this way. Moreover, that cloth bag also “complementary” from one “………………….college…………” and Yono by SBI. Therefore, it is not known how this type of kit was conceived and finalized to be distributed to the delegates.

About the proceeding volumes: Their circular declared, “It is expected that the printed volume of the Proceedings of the 79th session (Barkatullah University, Bhopal) will be ready (both in the form of a printed copy and CD) for free distribution among members such as were on rolls at the 79th session) at the forthcoming (80th ) session at the Kannur University, Kerala”. However, the CD was not given. Old copies of previous proceeding volumes were brought and dumped near registration counter. Actually, many life members are not attending regularly, but, they are not getting their volumes. Earlier, if Rs 20/-. 40/- etc., were sent by M.O, the life members used to get the volumes by Registered book post. Therefore, it is not known, how the volumes are sold, without giving copies to life members.

The food provided to the delegates: Though, the organizers asked about “Food” veg or non-veg, it was evident that they did not care about the “veg” food takers. When six or seven tables were with non-veg items, only one table was with veg-food. The veg-food quality was very normal and the items were not prepared properly. The sambar and rasam were not up to the mark. The items were too salty, sour and nor palatable also. As usual, the non-veg historians invaded veg also, looted and the veg-historians had to keep quiet. However, hundreds of historians and delegates were shouting for “Azadi / freedom” for many things. Here, they were contradicting and violating the rights of others. Above all, that “dictator” was worried and particular in asking for token!

The attitude of the office barriers, their engaged volunteers etc: Any simple onlooker could notice that the IHC engaged volunteers, that too, young girls had been so indifferent, callous and uninterested with the delegates of aged, coming from different places etc. They made others waiting, or going from counter to counter without any reason. Shockingly, nearly 50 such volunteers were sitting in a row with tables and chairs. The two young ladies were asking the delegates to wait for 10 minutes for every 20 and 30 minutes. They claimed that the registration had to be done online by them. Thus, the delegates were made to stand there for nearly two hours and then they started sending messages through phones. However, one had to wait for another message for confirmation and then for accommodation. The accommodation also was not provided, though, they claimed, it would come as message. After asking a dozen times only, they provided and then again had to wait for vehicle, as the places were 20 to 30 kms away from the university campus.

Indians have been very often accused of forgetting the past, recent past but always harp upon the lengthy past, yet, they are made to forget what happened just 40 years back. Thus, going through a GOOGLE search, my old books and journals, I came across the old issue of Illustrated Weekly dated May 25, 1975, Frits Staal’s book, “The Vedic Ritual of the Fire Altar”[1] and of course details available from the current website of the Vedic Workshop, 2014[2]. In 40 years, how much the connected people, places and nations have changed is noted. In Indian context, I am surprised to note that even Indians have changed much i.e, westernized, and now Americanized in all aspects.

What is “Agnichayana”[3]: The Illustrated Weekly dated May 25, 1975 stated that in Kerala a “renaissance” in yajnas took place over 1,500 years ago to counteract Buddhist influence. However, it is not known as to Budhhism was so dominant in Kerala during 4th-5th centuries. Some scholars pointed out that it was there till 16th century and then declined[4]. From 16th-17th centuries onwards, the Portuguese and other European and Arab presence started here and therefore, the so-called Vedic / Yajnas cannot be said to be the reason for their decline or any necessity to counter its influence. This movement of performance of Yajnas, was spearheaded by Mezhathole Agnihotri, who conducted over 99 yagnas at Yagneswaram. In the past 75 years, about 150 yagnas were conducted at Sukapuram, Perumanam, Irinjalakuda, Taliparambu and Karikatt in Kerala. However, its response was not felt in north India or others.

From Somayaga to Agnichayana: The attempts of westerners or foreigners urging Keralite Nambudris to reenact the Yagnas go back to 1962, when Frits Staal persuaded Ittiravi Nambudri to conduct “Somayaga”, but it could not be materialized due to technical reasons. Later, an “International Agnichayna Committee of scholars” from Holland, America, Britain, Japan, India, Austria, East Germany, West Germany, France, Nepal and Finland was formed. The involvement of the foreigners raised many objections, because of the motives revealed at that time. At one side, the experimentation or reenactment of Vedic rituals for the research or foreigners and the counter effctects produced by them thereafter. The critics and opposing groups explicity pointed out that the films and audio recording would be used against India, Hindus and Vedas themselves. However, Frits Staal, because of his association with South India, that too having a Keralite wife Saraswati, could persuade the Nambudris to conduct Yajnas for him.

The long standing association of Frits staal with India: Johan Frederik (Frits) Staal was Born in Amsterdam, studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and took his undergraduate degree in 1954. He moved on to studies in Indian Philosophy and Sanskrit at Banaras Hindu University and the University of Madras where he completed his doctorate in 1957. During his long career, Professor Staal served in a number of notable institutions. He was Lecturer in Sanskrit at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London from 1958 to 1962. He was Assistant and Associate Professor of Indian Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania during 1961-62. He was Professor of General and Comparative Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam from 1962 to 1967. He served as Visiting Professor of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during 1967-68. He was Professor of Philosophy and South Asian Languages at the University of California at Berkeley from 1968 to 1991. As a member of Berkeley’s Department of Philosophy, he founded the university’s Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies (originally called the Department of South and Southeast Asian Languages and Literatures) in 1973, and served as its first Chair. He took early retirement from Berkeley in 1991 and served as Visiting Professor in universities around the world[5]. He is survived by his wife Sarasvati of Berkeley, California, a son and a daughter.

First refusal and then acceptance to perform: J Frits Staal and Asko Parpola requested Ittiravi Nambudri in 1971 to organize more complicated “Agnichayana”. With efforts going on, it was scheduled to be performed in 1974. But, in 1974 some of the ritualists who were supposed to perform Yagna refused to do so. The performance of ritual for the foreigners, recording of the ritual and dramatization were opposed by the traditional Vedic scholars. Therefore, it was postponed, but with the support of and Erkara Ramam Nambudris, the plan was revived to have it in 1975. The sudden change in mind was due to the commitment in performing Yasjnas or money offered by the foreigners was not known explicitly. In any case, Staal was responsible for creating the awareness about the Vedic rituals in modern times[6].

The “foreign connection” was criticized in 1974-75: The connection, promotion and funding of Yagna reenactment activities were criticized by many during the period of 1974-75. N. V. Krishna Warrior[7] (1911-1989) and Thayyat Sankaran[8] (1926-1985) attacked the Indian Yagna performers and commented about “the desire for dollar”. They were noted poets and critics. This only could be taken as the financial influence affecting the traditional scholars. Another well-known poet and the first Jnanapith Award winner, G. Sankara Kurup, popularly known as “G” condemned the animal sacrifice associated with the yagna activities. The usage of animals in the Yagna fires had been the controversial one and the views expressed have been –

  1. Animals were scarified.
  2. Animals not sacrificed.
  3. Only substitutes used.

The hypocrisy in Ahimsa, etc were revealed in the opposition of animal-sacrifice: Again opposition started, this time from the public on the grounds that the goat would be suffocated to death, even if it was not sacrificed. However, others argued, “Are you not every day dissecting hundreds of animals in the colleges and butchering thousands in the market, including cows?”. The filming of the event was also opposed by the agitators claiming that the films would be used in their part of propaganda against India. Ironically, the Communist Party (Marxist) spoke of “the political penetration of Dollar Imperialism into India”. The Illustrated Weekly added that, “In the mean while, somebody (said to ge a Jana Sanghi) threatened to burn himself in the sacrificial fire!”.

The Agnichayana conducted from April.12th to 24th  1975: to The controversial Yagna started on April.12, 1975. On April.24, 1975, the Yagna was over and it was reported that an “Awe-Inspiring Sight” occurred! It was claimed that a Kite, Garuda, the divine bird was sighted flying over the Yagnasalas!

However, now after the rituals were over in the Vedic Workshop 2014, nothing has been reported so far. After 40 years, the delegates have only enjoyed the 5-star hotel accommodation and other facilities.

Panini rediscovered by the western Indologists[9]: Staal argued that the ancient Indian grammarians, especially Pāṇini, had completely mastered methods of linguistic theory not rediscovered again until the 1950s and the applications of modern mathematical logic to linguistics by Noam Chomsky.  Noam Chomsky himself has said that the first generative grammar in the modern sense was Panini’s grammar[10].  The early methods allowed the construction of discrete, potentially infinite generative systems. Remarkably, these early linguistic systems were codified orally, though writing was then used to develop them in some way. The formal basis for Panini’s methods involved the use of “auxiliary” markers, rediscovered in the 1930s by the logician Emil Post[11]. Post’s rewrite systems are now a standard approach for the description of computer languages. The ancient discoveries were motivated by the need to preserve exact Sanskrit pronunciation and expression given the primacy of language in ancient Indian thought[12]. Now Michael Witzel elaborated this hypothesis and claimed that Panini grammer is known only to him and he can only interpret the Rigvedic verses!

Thus, the following ideological orientation could be noted[14]:

  1. The oral tradition of hymns, chants, sacrificial and magical formulas were folklore (myths and legends).
  2. They composed nearly two thousand years before Christ, by the poets, seers, sages, and ritualists.
  3. The poets, seers, sages, and ritualists were Indo-European tribes. This linguistic notion was changed to racial and continues even today.
  4. And they invaded the Indian Subcontinent, i.e, the AIT was stressed.
  5. They are regarded as a sacred revelation and have been transmitted orally and recited faithfully by Brahmin males for a remarkable span of history. i.e, females were prohibited!

The Vedic Workshop 2014: Now, Frits Staal is not there, but perhaps taken over Micheal Witzel. He has been showing his peculiar interpretation of Vedas and conveying different attitude towards Vedic studies. Asko Parpola, though has changed much now, he is not found in the Vedic Workshop. Following Vedic procedure, he researched but started interpreting differently changing stands. Such change has been from “Aryan” to “Dravidian”, as his friend Iravatham Mahadevan has been doing. We do not know during the rituals, the foreign participants donned the Indian traditional dress or otherwise. In fact, how the Indian delegates appeared is not known. When I contacted one of the sectional president and paper presenter, he informed that the academic session was conducted strictly without anybody’s interference; even in the selection of papers, there was “peer committee” and it was done carefully, the academic proceedings thus went on well just like an international conference. In comparing the sixth international Vedic workshop held in Kozhiokode from January 7 to 10 2014 and the international conference on Mahabharata  in Tirupati from 7th to 11th 2014, I pointed out the ghost of AIT haunting and daunting the paper presenters[15]. The domination the foreigners has been also pointed out[16].
