“Mad man” throwing chappal on Swami Ranganatha and the “wild” elephant killing mahout in Samayapuram!

SriRangam - The Hindu version - 25-05-2018

The extreme, fanatical and radical groups  acting in Dravidastan: Sri Rangam has been sacred place, pilgrimage centre and abode of Gods and Goddesses for believing and devouted Hindus. However, it has been the target of the rabid Dravidian leaders from 1970 onwards by Annadurai, Karunanidhi, to anti-Hindu K. Viramani. When the former categories declared that, “The day the idols of Sri Ranganatha and Thillai Nataraja were destroyed with bombardments of tanks, that day is golden day for us.” As such venomous words were poured from the Chief Ministers of Tamilnadu and they always exhibited their anti-Hindu rants openly, such people have taken later that such type of shouts are allowed in the “Dravidian parlance.” The extreme, fanatical and radical groups have been targeting Sri Rangam by all means thereafter. The archbishop Arulappa also caught hold of Sri Rangam “Ganesh Iyer” converted to “Acharya Paul” for manufacturing evidences to promote “thomas myth” in India in 1980s. The bigoted K. Viramani installed a “Periyar statue” in the public road, in front of the Sri Rangam temple. The extreme Naxalite and CPML gang entered the temple and created problem. Now “a mad man” enters the sanctum sanctorum with knife, scissors, chappal etc. And then, the elephant became “wild” suddenly at Samyapuram temple to trample its mahout next day.

Chappal thrwon on Renganatha, Srirangam, 24-05-2018

Attacking temples, temple priests, looting temples and properties have become order of the day: As the people of Tamilnadu, have been living under these extreme, fundamentalist and fanatic groups since 1970s, and they have already witnessed, the so-called “Periyar” with all his “analytical wisdom” breaking Vinayaka idols, the black shirt DK gangs garlanding Rama, Sita, Lakhsmana with chappals and beating with chappals carrying in a procession, many temples and mutts attacked on one or the other pretext, for all the political incidences, the poor Brahmins were targeted, abused, beaten, their sacred threads cut, why even cut with aruval / knives without any reason, they may take these “incidences” as a part of neo-iconoclasts, modern-day Mohammedans and Indian brand of ISIS terrorists. Poor Hindus may continue pray and keep silence, “God would take care of”! About the looting temples and mutts, their properties, one need not explain, as it has become the order of the day.

Person who threw chappal- Srirangam 24-05-2018

Whether the obnoxious things brought inside were thrown or dropped inside sanctom sanctorium?: A 29-year-old man holding a soiled bag near the sanctum sanctorum at the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple caused anxious moments on 23-05-2018, Wednesday morning[1]. “The Hindu” says it is Wednesday, whereas, other papers point out, it was Thursday! The man, identified as R. Dharmaraj of Thiruvadaimaruthur in Thanjavur district, was said to be mentally unstable[2]. It is not known as to how the “mentally unstable” person has chosen Sri Rangam temple, when, there have been so many temples in and around Tanjore. Dharmaraj was standing in the queue along with other devotees around 10.30 a.m. when he dropped his bag on the step near the sanctum sanctorum, causing a flutter. The temple staff took him out and found a scissors, a penknife and discarded clothes in the bag. The incident went viral on social media and it was claimed that the man had flung the bag near the sanctum sanctorum. Temple authorities, however, maintained that the man had dropped the bag on the step near the sanctum sanctorum. So here also, the secular interpretation comes as to whether “the obnoxious things brought inside were thrown or dropped inside sanctum sanctorium.” How it has crossed all the security checks was also not explained by the authorities.

HR CE complaint to police 24-05-2018

Afterwards declarations, complaints show that the authorities wanted to hush up the issue: The Hindu goes on to explain, “The temple authorities performed Panchakavya Prokshana, a cleansing ritual, after the incident. The police said Dharmaraj had abused the temple security staff and prevented them from discharging their duty when they checked the bag. The Srirangam police arrested Dharmaraj and booked a case against him. The temple authorities have placed a request before the police to check personal belongings of devotees at all the three entrances of the shrine before letting them inside, and to intensify surveillance and security”. The same news has been reported by the TOI[3] as, “TRICHY: The Srirangam police arrested a 27-year-old man for preventing temple staff from discharging their duties and intimidating them with dire consequences after he was questioned for throwing a bag containing a knife inside Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple on Thursday.” So, if one has to believe that this “mentally unstable” person could prevent the entire security personnel of the temple at mercy! Thus, the persons with “analytical wisdom” have to believe the story. And it happened next day as follows.

Elephant trampling mahout, Srirangam, 25-05-2018

Mahout trained elephant becoming wild and trampling him: Samayapuram Mariamman Temple remains closed after the temple elephant trampled G Gajendran, the mahout to death on 25-05-2018, Friday. Samayapuram Mariamman Temple remains closed after the temple elephant trampled the mahout to death on Friday[4]. Police said the incident took place near the temple premises premises in full view of shocked devotees. The mahout of the temple elephant of Samayapuram Mariamman Temple near Tiruchi was trampled to death by the pachyderm on Friday. The 12-year-old female elephant crushed the 42-year-old mahout under its legs at 11 am when devotees were moving towards the sanctum sanctorum for worship. “Masini was brought to the temple at 10.50 am by Gajendran. In the next ten minutes, it turned violent and pushed the mahout to the ground and trampled him. His body was taken out later,” superintendent of police, Trichy district, Zia Ul Haq told TOI[5]. Everyone knows elephants cannot become wild, unless they are provoked with extreme activities. Police said that devotees ran helter-skelter to safeguard themselves and in the chaos two women and a child were injured. Temple employees closed the gates of the area to prevent a rampage by the elephant. A video of the elephant trampling the mahout is also in circulation.

Samayapuram -elephant trampling mahout - 25-05-2018

Calm and co-operative elephant cannot become wild targeting only mahout and not any other: The video shows Masini stamping Gajendran multiple times, while someone raises an alarm. The incident triggered panic among the people in and around the temple. “Masini was generally very calm and cooperative. I wonder what provoked it to go out of control. The mahout usually brings it to the temple in the morning and takes it back to its shelter by night,” said a local resident, V P Muniappan[6]. On getting information, a team led by regional joint director of animal husbandry, Trichy Dr A Murugan rushed to the temple. He said that Masini got furious after someone allegedly pulled some hair from its tail, when it was blessing a couple who got married in the temple. The attempts of the mahout to calm the elephant down failed and it vented its anger on him. Forest department officials brought a kumki elephant to the temple to control Masini. While a team of veterinarians was about to administer tranquiliser, some mahouts managed to calm the elephant. Masini was then chained in a room inside the temple. Authorities planned to take Masini back to its shelter on Friday night with the help of the kumki elephant. Darshan was suspended following the tragedy and is expected to resume on Saturday. Samayapuram police registered a case based on a complaint by an eyewitness, G Achutan, 19. Preliminary investigations revealed that the elephant was not chained on Friday. Gajendran’s body was taken to Srirangam government hospital for post-mortem. He was a resident of Mahalikudi near Samayapuram and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

What should be done?: The Hindus should insist for the following:

  1. The Dravidian ideologists should change or the people should change them.
  2. They cannot play double game with the Hindu believers.
  3. Their tongues should be held hereafter, if they want to criticize Hindu religion, scriptures etc.
  4. Even under the category of “analytical wisdom,” Periyarism etc., they cannot do that.
  5. The rabid elements cannot be nurtured and protected under the guise of “imbalanced, disturbed etc., ” as such people cannot enter temple.
  6. The atheists, party members and other anti-Hindu type people should be expelled from the temple, including HR & CE.
  7. The secuirity ceck should be thorough and there should not be any deviation, evem for employee.
  8. The anti-Hindu forces, their movements trough the city within the seven prakaras should not be allowed under any pretext.
  9. Such elements, shop-keepers and others can be expelled.
  10. Sri Rangam temple should be protected just like “Golden temple” with seven prakaras and walls.

Jizya come back Khilji -Aurangazeb rule India again!

June 29, 2015

Jizya come back Khilji -Aurangazeb rule India again

Introduction : Now, there are lot conditions imposed on celebration of Indian traditional festivals, conduct of pilgrimages and other periodical religious congregations. In India with the tradition, culture, heritage and civilization of more than 5000 years, the periodic festivals like Kumbamela, Adiperukku or gathering at Sangamams / Kudals (confluence of three rivers) for sacred bath on the prescribed days, Karttikai Theepam, etc., in different parts of temples have been part of Indian people[1]. However, of late, there have been restrictions on such celebrations by the State and Central government through the rulers, who are nothing but politicians with motives.

Mohammedan rulers imposed such restrictions : In the past, the Mohammedan rulers imposed such restrictions through Jizya – religious toll tax on Hindus[2]. The conditions of Jizya have been very specific and they were meant for restricting the movement of Hindus by participating and celebrating in huge numbers, as had been going on for many years. When Hindus had been in large numbers, there was difficulty for Mohammedan marauders for looting. Initially, the Mohammedans intruded into India as raiders and looters in hoards and used to retreat or run away after looting. But from 11th – 12th centuries onwards, they tried to settle down and rule from Delhi. Thus, the so-called Delhi Sultanate rule started and they imposed Jizya tax on Hindus[3].

The conditions of Jizya tax system imposed on Hindus : The Hindus who agree to pay jizya were allowed to live and work in the Islamic state with the following conditions. The operation started with Khiljis (1290-1320 CE) and pursued by other Muslim rulers[4]:

  1. They are not to build any new places of worship.
  2. They are not to repair any old places of worship which have been destroyed by the Muslims.
  3. They are not to prevent Muslim travellers from staying in their places of worship.
  4. They are to entertain for three days any Muslim who wants to stay in their homes, and for a longer period if he falls ill.
  5. They are not to harbour any hostility or give aid and comfort to hostile elements.
  6. They are not to prevent anyone of them from getting converted to Islam.
  7. They have to show respect to every Muslim.
  8. They have to allow Muslims to participate in their private meetings.
  9. They are not to dress like Muslims.
  10. They are not to name themselves with Muslim names.
  11. They are not to ride on horses with saddle and bridle.
  12. They are not to possess arms.
  13. They are not to wear signet rings or seals on their fingers.
  14. They are not to sell or drink liquor.
  15. They are to wear a distinctive dress, which shows their inferior status and separates them from Muslims[5].
  16. They are not to propagate their customs and usages among the Muslims.
  17. They are not to build their houses in the neighbourhood of Muslims.
  18. They are not to bring their dead near the graveyards of the Muslims.
  19. They are not to observe their religious practices publicly or mourn their dead loudly.
  20. They are not to buy Muslim slaves.

Ironically, most of the conditions are prevailing in India today. For each, we can give hundreds and thousands of examples can be given.

December 6: The Jizya prevails in India : On December 6 of every year, the media itself gives enough publicity to make it a “Terrorist Day”[6] or “Jihad-implementation Day”[7] and thus, the Jizya-ideology coupled with Jihadi-threat starts prevailing everywhere, restricting, preventing and harassing Hindus like anything at bus-stands, railway station and in temples particularly operated through the police and security forces. Whether Jihadi-Islamist terrorist attack or not the media-terror and the security-terror really terrorize people! It is a wonder when the heinous Islamic terrorists have been bombing and killing people in India, how they would come out and attack on that day, when the media and government have already given enough publicity. Not only that, they give full details with photographs, how the security arrangements have been made! After schools and colleges, such terror has come to Music festivals.

  • Frisking of devotees – particularly, the ladies are subjected to a lot of inconvenience.
  • The word “frisk” has the meanings = search, check for weapons, pat down, body search, examine, inspect etc. Are these required for devotees coming there regularly?
  • checking of bags – virtually, the “offerings brought to temple” are ransacked upside down, making the sanctity useless – flowers are crushed, dhoop-sticks broken, offerings brought completely disturbed, packets opened, even coconuts dropped on the ground while “checking”!
  • They are stopped at the darshan queues for repeated checking.

In fact, these acts amount to insult the devotees, abuse of the rights of Hindus and violation of established Agama Sastras of temples[8]. If the Indian security system could not identify the real terrorists and regular devotees, it is a shame on the system. If they doubt that the Jihadi-Islamic-Mohammedan terrorists would sneak into temples in that way, then, it is proving the historical fact.

“Non-Hindus are not allowed”, “People wearing Lungis and Pants are not allowed” : Many people used to take objection about the boards put up at the entrance of the temples – “Non-Hindus are not allowed”, “People wearing Lungis and Pants are not allowed” etc[9]. Rich, elite and secular categories of “Hindus” used to write letters and they would be prominently published in the “National dailies”[10]. Most of such letters would be from USA and other advanced countries. But now, they could understand how the Jizya and Jihad systems would have worked in the past and also working now, so that such boards are required. Why then with all their richness and wisdom, they (the Hindus in foreign countries) could not protect their religion and temples but when they come to India, they expect all sorts of concessions, privileges etc.? They spent in dollars in night clubs etc., there and try to repent and expiate their sins here by offering in rupees to temples! They treat their Indian visit as some short of “divine-commercial trip” which should be done within their scheduled program. All rules and procedures could be flouted and violated. What sort of hypocrisy it is and has been fooling other Hindus and also creating bad image about India?

Mohammedans, Christians, atheists and other non-Hindus sitting inside are not “frisked” or ” doubted”! In the past, as the Hindus had clearly recognized that the Mohammedans had been the temple demolishers and destroyers, and Idol-breakers, they had been identified, monitored and branded accordingly[11]. Later, as times changed, the warnings appeared according to easy understanding for the people. Thus, “Non-Hindus are not allowed”, “People wearing Lungis and Pants are not allowed” etc., have specific meanings. Till early 20thcentury, there had been man to man relationship prevailing among the Indians and thus the temple priests, employees and the people around knew “who is who” coming to the temples. Now, the temples have been commercialized by the atheist, secular and other politicians. Ironically, the Mohammedan, Christian, ant-Hindu categories are getting employment and sitting right inside the temples[12] and they are not subjected to any “frisking”! How one can vouchsafe that such Mohammedans, Christians, atheists and anti-Hindus would not collude and collaborate with the Jihad-Islamic terrorists?

Non-Hindus have been dominating in and around Temples commercially : Another important fact has been the shops and other surrounding places of temples have been dominated by the non-Hindus. Even on Tirumala, Mohammedans are freely roaming as vendors, TTD employees, workers and so on (besides AP govt. Employees)! Of course, it has been a regular feature in Tamilnadu and Kerala. The Mohammedan, Christian, atheists and non/anti-Hindu categories are getting shop allotments, license and contracts for temple related activities. They do only for money, of course, definitely with contempt for the temples and Hindus. Otherwise, these activities are supposed to be carried on by the temple devotees voluntarily offering their services as “Uzhavarapp pani”, “Kar-seva” etc. Anybody remembers or knows the significance of Titunavukkarasar carrying “Uzhavaarap padai” i.e, just like hand-spade to clean. Thus, the cleaning, repair and maintenance wiork was carried on by the devotees and not by these non-Hindu contractors. But the present Central and State governments have spoiled the system completely. Remember, how the meaningful expression “Kar-seva” has been disparaged and belittled by the media and other anti-Hindus[13]. The recent demolition activities carried on at the temples under the guise of renovation[14] has also been part of such attitude exhibited through the Dravidian politicians and rulers.

Security norms laid down for music festivals : “The Hindu” characteristically reports[15]
that, “In tune with the prevailing security scenario, the Chennai Police have laid down security guidelines to be implemented at venues of music festivals. Organisers and auditorium staff have been told to upgrade security by installing gadgets, including metal detectors. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mylapore) A.G. Mourya, who convened a meeting of auditorium representatives here on Wednesday, underlined the need for establishing closed circuit television network as a permanent security measure.” He adds that, “There are about 21 auditoria, including a few in schools, where music festivals are held in the Tamil month of Margazhi. Detailed instructions have been given on the dos and don’ts. We have asked them to engage trained security personnel and install Door Frame Metal Detectors,” said Mr. Mourya. Areas in close vicinity to the auditoria should be kept free from congestion to facilitate movement of emergency services such as ambulances or fire tenders. Organisers should request music lovers not to bring any baggage.” Thus, here a lot of questions arise:

  • These festivals have been going on for thousands of years without any problem.
  • And absolutely, there is no question of the Police to teach the persons connected with music festivals to follow, “Detailed instructions have been given on the dos and don’ts.”
  • The upgradation of security by installing gadgets, including metal detectors and engaging trained security personnel and install Door Frame Metal Detectors etc., are too much as the musicians and music lovers are not fighting with Jihadis.
  • If that is the case, it is the default of the present Governments for such nurturing of Jihadi-terrorism.

Just for example, few specific cases of temples and related issues are studied, in other words, these examples are only for illustrative purposes and not exhaustive, as there have been crores of sacred places available for Hindus in India and even outside India.

Lashkar could target Madurai”s Meenakshi temple : The reports appear[16] in the media is unbelievable.”Laskar could attack Madurai Meenakshi temple”! The famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai in Tamil Nadu is on the Lashkar-e-Tayiba”s hit-list, fears the Intelligence Bureau. The IB has alerted Tamil Nadu”s director general of police with information obtained by intercepts by the Indian Army and the Research and Analysis Wing, India”s external intelligence agency. IB Director P C Haldar spoke to Tamil Nadu DGP K P Jain on Saturday to convey the Centre”s concerns. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil may speak to state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to urgently post additional security at the temple. The Centre wants the Tamil Nadu government to take quick action on its alert and avert any threat to the shrine[17].

rediff.com “s Krishna Kumar P adds [18] : Security in and around the Meenakshi temple has been beefed up, the Tamil Nadu police said on Saturday. “I cannot share with you details of the IB inputs. The temple figures in our alerts also. We have asked the respective departments to step up security in vulnerable installations and public places like markets and malls. Temples also figure in this, and security has been stepped up,” DGP Jain told rediff.com, but declined to answer questions about any specific alert about the temple. Madurai Commissioner of Police Nandabalan said he was asked to increase security at the temple by his superiors. “The temple has always been secure. Only recently we ensured that all guides and shopowners in the area were ID-ed and identity cards were issued. We recently installed closed circuit security cameras,” he told rediff.com The temple has four entrances and the police have placed a sub-inspector, an armed reserve policeman and a local constable at each entrance. Also, vehicular traffic around the temple has been blocked; only pedestrians are allowed in the four streets that form the perimeter of the temple.

“After the Ahmedabad blasts, we did not want to take any chances. With our own inputs and also the central input, we have decided to enhance the security to the temple. We have set up an exclusive control room at the temple,” Nandabalan said. A top priest of the temple said the police switched into vigilance mode from early Saturday. “Early in the morning, when the temple gates were opened, the police were there with sniffer dogs. They were very alert. We thought it was a routine exercise, but what struck us was the intensity of the search. There were more policemen than usual and their presence did not decrease as the day wore on, as is usual,” C Shanmuga Sundara Bhattar, one of the senior-most priests at the temple, told rediff.com The vast temple witnessed a minor blast in 1996, when a country-made bomb exploded in a corner of the shrine[19].

The Jihadi-threat to Temples has been become regular feature : Last September also[20], there was threatening from the Islamic terrorists about the targeting Five Big temples of Tamilnadu! Security has been stepped up in five major temples in Tamil Nadu following an intelligence alert of terror attacks. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, the Murugan temple in Palani, the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai and Sri Ranganathar Temple in Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli have come under a heightened security. Besides these temples, commercial hubs in Chennai and elsewhere have also been placed under surveillance. However, officials are wary about security arrangements in the temples, as they want the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, that administers temples, to be more proactive. Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmadabad and Bengaluru were hit by serial blasts in recent months killing and injuring hundreds of people.

Red alert after threat to temples at Varanasi! : Varanasi: An anonymous letter by a person claiming to be a member of the terrorist outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba[21], has threatened terror attacks at the disputed site in Ayodhya, and the Banaras Hindu University and the Sankat Mochan temple here on Holi day. The authorities have sounded a red alert in the district. The letter, sent to the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police on Thursday, also threatened attacks on the Cantonment railway station and the bus stand from March 4 onwards, SSP Sujit Pandey”s Public Relations Officer K.D. Tripathi said here. The Sankat Mochan temple and the Cantonment railway station were targeted by terrorists last year.

Tight security at Tirumala, Bhadrachalam: Following the threat :Additional forces deployed in and around the temple complexes and Security was beefed up at the Tirumala temple in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on Saturday in and around the temple complex. Roof-top centring atop the temple complex was increased by deploying additional men. Frisking of devotees and checking of bags were stepped up at both the darshan queue complexes and at Alipiri security point at Tirupati. To keep a watch on the movement of anti-social elements crossroad patrolling was organised around the Mada streets encircling the holy shrine and at other places, which witness heavy congregation of pilgrims. The TTD security and vigilance staff and the district police conducted combing operations along the footpath leading to the temple town besides undertaking the night patrolling. Khammam Staff Reporter writes: Following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, security was tightened at the Bhadradri temple in Bhadrachalam with security personnel undertaking regular checking and frisking on the premises. However, two of the three door frame metal detectors at the temple were out of order and the eastern gate of the temple had no metal detector. The special police force entrusted with the temple security were managing with three handheld metal detectors. The Police Department urged the authorities to get the DFMDs repaired immediately. Some ten constables and two head constables of the SPF have been put on guard. The local police have been assisting them and supplementing their efforts by conducting regular checking of the vehicles and suspected elements on the roads and lanes leading to the shrine. The police wanted a separate locker to be arranged near the main gate so that pilgrims could be made to deposit their handbags before entering the premises. A separate bandobust plan was prepared for the Mokkoti festival to be held on January 6 and 7.

Danger behind the so-called “security – beefing up” :

As jihadi-Islamist-Islamic terrorism has been identified, action should be taken on such “perpetrators” : Now, it is open that these Jihadi-Islamist-Islamic terrorists have been against Hindus in particular[22] and therefore, the Central and State government should take immediate action in controlling, containing and stopping their activities. They need not give advice or alert or crate panic in temples under the guide of safety and security, If they are really interested, first let them the non-hindus are transferred and thrown out of the Temples, Temple boards and related functions. Not that Hindus disbelieve them, but under prevailing conditions, they have to be sent out and they can be posted in Mosques, Churches, mausoleums, graveyards and samadhis (wonderful structures built over their dead bodies) of their leaders[23], as they have become their gods. Incidentally, Veeramani has been going on planting EVR statues all over Tamilnadu and therefore, they can be easily accommodated there[24].

[23] In Tamilnadu, this has become the unique feature of Dravidian culture and they have become the “grave-worshippers” just like the Mohammedans and Christians. This feature is interesting for researchers to go into the details.

Hindu Temples of Tamilnadu under systematic destruction!

Hindu Temples of Tamilnadu under systematic destruction!

T. S. Subramanian has pointed out the deteriorating condition of murals in temples many times[1]. He should be congratulated to bring out such facts with concerned feelings expressed in his writings. However, the concerned and connected people have not taken any action to annul such vandalizing processes going on in the name of renovation, administration and other actions. The recent article “Targets of destruction” has been provoking, but we have to wait and see the response of the authorities.

Target of destruction: He starts with the appropriate beginning[2]: “Art, in more than 50 temples and three palaces in Tamil Nadu, is being mutilated” and explains the condition as follows: “Temples in Tamil Nadu are repositories of history, with inscriptions, sculptures, murals, bronzes, carvings, architecture and so on. The inscriptions provide valuable insights into the history of the period during which the temples were built, the village administration that prevailed, elections conducted for its assemblies, taxes collected, boards set up for the maintenance of lakes, ponds and canals, donation of land for Brahmin settlements, gifting gold for temple maintenance, etc.  There are more than 50 temples and three palaces in Tamil Nadu with murals. The palaces are Ramalinga Vilasam in Ramanathapuram and those at Bodinayakanur near Madurai and Padmanabhapuram in Kanyakumari district. While just four or five temples have murals dating back to the Pallava period (seventh to ninth century CE) and the Chola period (10th and 11th century CE), the majority of the murals belong to the Vijayanagar and the Nayak periods (14th to 17th century CE). The Brihadeeswara temple in Thanjavur have murals belonging to the Chola, the Nayak and the Maratha reigns.

Visual archivesThe mural masterpieces are visual archives on the history of the period, coronation rituals, the dress or the jewellery that men and women of those days wore, their hairstyle, musical instruments, the battles that they fought, the weapons used and so on. There are several Jain temples that have wonderful murals based on the Jain traditions, the Tirthankaras and the Yakshis. A favourite subject of many of the artists of those times was episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and some of the artists even took care to write the labels for the episodes (captions) in Tamil or Telugu. Unfortunately in Tamil Nadu, the murals, the inscriptions, the sculptures and carvings have become targets of destruction and vandalism. The officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department, who administers the temples, are to be blamed for this state. Most often, these officials fail to appreciate and preserve these splendid works due to lack of knowledge of history.

How Meenakshi Temple was targeted? In the famous Meenakshi temple, Madurai, several historic mandapams have become shopping complexes. The Pudhu mandapam, the Ashta Sakti mandapam, Veera Vasantharayar mandapam and Meenakshi Nayakar mandapam teem with hundreds of shops, obstructing from view pillars with incredibly beautiful sculptures. A scholar on the history of the Meenakshi temple was displeased that its 1,000-pillared mandapam, with superb sculptures, has become ‘a studio’ now, with an incongruously gleaming granite floor, skewed focus lights and a big sculpture of Nataraja painted in black! Several years ago, the earthen bed of the temple’s famous ‘Golden Lotus’ tank (Pottramarai Kulam) was cemented up, with the result that no water stays in the tank now and it looks barren now. The HR and CE officials of the temple also whitewashed hundreds of beautiful murals, painted on the walls of the northern corridor of the Golden Lotus tank, portraying the ‘Tiruvilaiyadal,’ in the first quarter of 1996.

In a state of disrepair: While sculptures and carvings can survive for centuries because they have been chiselled out of granite, murals are vulnerable to nature. Since these murals were painted with natural dyes on mandapam walls or ceiling, they easily lend themselves to vandalism from devotees. Besides, they are exposed to sun or seepage of water from rain. Gaps between the granite slabs that form the roof of the mandapams lead to seepage of water due to rain and the sidewalls begin to ‘sweat.’ The lime plaster which forms the base for the murals has a tendency to absorb the water. When rain water falls on the murals painted on the ceiling or walls, fungus develops and the murals start peeling off. Smoke from the camphor (lit by the devotees) and from the oil lamps damage the paintings. Besides, they suffer from desecration at the hands of the HR and CE officials and devotees. Officials have fixed scores of metres of electric wires on the murals on the walls of the mandapams, installed switch boxes and tube lights on them, as it has happened in several places on the splendid murals in the Devaraja Swamy temple at Kanchipuram, portraying the 108 Divya Desam murals.

Other examples of vandalism: Extremely rare murals painted on wood in the Tirukkutraleeswarar temple at Tirukkutrala Chitra Sabha in Tirunelveli district have been vandalised. At the Siva temple at Patteeswaram, paintings were sandblasted in 1998 in the name of cleaning the surfaces on which they were painted. The paintings portrayed Lord Siva presenting a palanquin studded with pearls to the Saivite saint Tirugnana Sambandar because he could not bear to see his devotee walking in the sun. Temple officials sandblasted another row of paintings narrating the life of a mythical king who had no child but was blessed with a child after praying to Siva at Patteeswaram. Officials of the Lakshminarasimhar temple at Sevilimedu, near Kanchipuram, whitewashed them. They do not exist today.  Tales of destruction and desecration of these invaluable murals in temples in Tamil Nadu do not end with this list. What happened to the paintings at the Meenakshi temple at Madurai, the Trilokyanatha Jaina temple at Tiruparuttikunram near Kanchipuram, another Jaina temple at Karanthai near Kanchipuram and the Ramalinga Vilasam Palace in Ramanathapuram town take the cake.

Why this targested vattcks of vandalism? What the Mohammedan and the Europeans rulers could have done during their reigns is carried on in India, that too, after “independence” by the Indians by themselves. Ironically, “Hindu Religious & Endowment Board” under the control of proclaimed atheist, rationalist and particularly anti-Hindu ideologists for the last 70 years. The staff and officers entering into the department of HR&CE have been ideologists of all sorts of such category and some non-Hindus have also been there. And this vandalism is not done on one day, but carried on systematically. Whenever any official function comes, they carry out such destruction easily under the guise of celebration. The moment the temple comes under the control of HR&CE, any official comes into a temple, an office is constructed inside temple, that office is converted into some sort of lodge and then star-type accommodation, the temples start losing their sanctity. Perhaps, God is leaving the place. Under such circumstances, these modern day vandals, ideologists and rulers start their destruction.
