Vairamuthu’s research on Andal, the “quoted quote research methodology,” and the confession of “eminent historians”!

Vairamuthu’s research on Andal, the “quoted quote research methodology,” and the confession of “eminent historians”!

Andal, Vairamuthu controversy

The controversy started with Vairamuthu on Andal (07-1-2018): What Vairamuthu wrote about Andal as appeared in “Dinamani” in Tamil, and its translation is given as follows[1]: “As Andal was not born to Periyazhwar, there were no details available about her birth, though, she was brought up by a Brahmin, as the society that was controlled with caste stratification might not accept her into such caste hierarchy, Andal herself had already attained the freedom of word with force and there was a practice of offering women to temple accepted by the then society, some researchers have been compelled to arrive at stunning conclusions. The book ‘Indian Movement: some aspects of dissent, protest and reform’ edited by Subash Chandra Malik of Indiana University, USA contains such reference as follows: Andal was herself a devadasi who lived and died in the Srirangam Temple. The devotees might not accept this, but, those who oppose patriarchy and socio-religious (code) might think about it.” This created the controversy that is still raging in Tamilnadu and some parts of Andhra and Karnataka. Ironically, now, Dinamani has removed the controversial or rather blasphemous article and their regrets are appearing there[2].

Vairamuthu, Vaidhyanathan, dinamani

Verification of the book referred to by Vairamuthu: Now, let us analyze the “quote” of the learned poet and writer of Vairamuthu. As he has given the reference, now, as a “researcher”, anyone can go to the source and verify.

India movements, S C Malik edited book

Thus, let us see the book under reference. M. G. S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan published a paper, “The Bhakti Movement in South India” in “Indian Movements: Some Aspects of Dissent Protest and Reform,” edited and introduced by S. C. Malik and published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 1978. In which, what they claimed was,

Cheraman Perumal Nayanar notes the reception given to Shiva by devadasis of all ages while he went out in procession around the streets in Kailas35, and Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple36.

Quotations of MGS

The two footnotes given for support for those two lines are as follows:

  1. Ceraman Perumal Nayanar, Adiyula, M. Raghava Aiyangar, ed. Caruventar Ceyyukovai, 1951, Trivandrum, Vol.II, pp.136-64.
  1. T. A. Gopinatha Rao, The History of Sri Vaishnavas, Madras, 1923, Madras, p. 5.

MGS, Kesavan , tthe book

So when we look at page no.5 of the said book, what, T. A. Gopinatha Rao recorded is this, “When she reached marriageable age, she refused to marry anyone except the God Ranganatha of the Srirangam temple. The God appeared to the Alvar in a dream to declare before him his acceptance of the girl in marriage and ordered her to be brought to his residence at Srirangam. Periyalvar took her there with great eclat and left her in her Lord’s house and returned to his quiet residence at Srivilliputtur.

Quotations of MGS- TAG Rao reference

Therefore, there is nothing like what the learned historians M. G. S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan reportedly claimed, “Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple.” Why then, the leaned “historians” wrote in that way and what was their motive?

Quotations of MGS- TAGopinatha Rao reference,p.5

M. G. S. Narayanan clarified to Dinathanthi that there was no such reference to Devadasi[3]: When Asoka Vardhini contacted M. G. S. Narayanan through phone, he accepted that there was no specific reference to Andal as devadasi and he mentioned it based on inference only. He also accepted that Veluthat Kesavan was a student of him, doing M.A history (implying that he might not have been having research expertise at that time). There is no inscriptional evidence to that effect and it was written only based on “oral tradition.” When she asked specifically, he specifically confessed that there is no primary evidence and even secondary evidence to that effect, it was a controversial interpretation and a “matter of inference”. Then, naturally, it is intriguing and shocking to know as to know how they could have written conclusively, “Andal was herself a devadasi who lived and died in the Srirangam Temple.” Now, he is considered as one of reputed and eminent historians of India, former chairman of ICHR and so on. Why them, they stooped to such “quoted quote” research methodology, amounting faking and forging such lies and falsehood in historiography?

Vairamuthu regrets for Andal comments

The implications of “quoted quote research,” bogey of “eminent historians” and other modern-day mythistories: Now let us analyze their quotations, reportedly lifted from two books mentioned above.

  1. The book in question was published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 1978 and not by Indiana University, USA as claimed by Vairamuthu.
  1. Vairamuthu should have verified the sources before quoting, that too, part of a sentence picking up from their paper. He must have consulted the original sources (as he knows Tamil very well) and also other secondary sources after 1978 to present his speech and “researched” article appeared.
  1. Ironically, he and the press, still carry such wrong and falsified blabbering[4]. “As part of my research for writing this article on Aandaal, I happened to read a collection of articles edited by Subhash Chandra Malik in the name of “Indian Movements: Some Aspects of Dissent, Protest and Reform”, the original from Indiana University and published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study in 1978. It is very much an Indian research study by Indian historians,”thus claimed Vairamuthu.[5]
  1. Vairamuthu added, “Professor M.G.S Narayanan & Professor Kesavan Veiuthat. Professor M. G. S Narayanan is considered as “one of India’s top authorities on ancient history” and has served as the chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research. Professor Kesavan Veluthat is the Professor of History in University of Delhi. The line mentioned in my article was from a reputed publication and by reputed historians.” But, M. G. S. Narayanan now refuted. Here, Vairamuthu mentioned, “G.S Narayanan is considered as “one of India’s top authorities on ancient history,” whereas, the subject dealt with has not been so ancient!
  1. Cheraman Perumal Nayanar notes the reception given to Shiva by devadasis of all ages while he went out in procession around the streets in Kailas35.” M. G. S. Narayanan himself accepted that the story of Cheraman Perumal was a myth floated after 13th century by the vested Mohammedan groups. Therefore, the question of devadasis of all sorts going out in procession is redundant, immaterial and incompetent.
  1. Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple36.” This is also fake, fraudulent and deceptive, as T.A. Gopinatha Rao never mentioned such sentence in his book, as pointed out above.
  1. It is unbecoming for these researchers, now, paraded as “historians” to quote that was not there in a book, secondary source.
  1. It exposes the dubious and dangerous nature of “quoted quote” research methodology, as most of the researchers, may not look into the quotes recorded by the “eminent historians.”
  1. Coming to ideology, it is evident that the involved personalities have been Marxists and atheists and thus, their speeches and writings have been tarnished with bias, prejudice and without objectivity.
  1. As the Marxist ideology is coupled with Dravidian ideology of atheism, that is directed against Hindu religion, evidently, Hindus have come to streets. How they have been oppressed, suppressed and attacked by them since 1960s have been too well-known to be repeated here.

Preventing Modi to become PM, opposing BJP and breaking NDA

Preventing Modi to become PM, opposing BJP and breaking NDA

Vedaprakash

The anti-Modi rhetoric of old partners of NDA: All most all non-BJP parties except the new allies have started their chorus of “Preventing Modi to become PM, opposing BJP and breaking NDA” one way or the other. The moment Narendra Modi was announced as the PM candidate for BJP, the first party to break from the NDA alliance was JD(S) with the rising rhetoric pitch of Nitish Kumar against Modi. Ironically, he was with the NDA for 17 years and appreciated Modi also. He was suggesting that he might accept L. K. Advani as the PM candidate but not Modi, as he would not be accepted by the secular partners. But, the BJP proceeded with the candidature of Modi, in spite of the fact that even Advani did not like it earlier, but had to accept.

Modi – polarizing or taking NDA to win: Then suggestions started circulating that Modi would dominate the scene till NDA gets majority and then Advani would be made PM so that NDA would get maximum majority. Such idea was nurtured in the TV debates usually carried on with the selected ideologues. Even Chandangupta was seen accepting such proportion in such forced debates. That is Modi would be exploited for attracting new voters, youth and polarize, thereby, some Muslim votes also, but if enough seats are won, then Advani would be declared as PM, so that through after poll alliance, more parties could be brought into NDA.

Mission 272+ and the reality: Some media carried on Narendra Modi’s ‘Mission 272+’ as follows[1]:

  1. As Modi is likely to focus on Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, which account for 210 Lok Sabha seats and if BJP could win more seats that what they had won a paltry 31 seats out of 210 in 2009, then, they ould in a better position. Thus, BJP has to perform hard and opinion polls predict that the BJP is likely to grab at least 100 seats from these areas.

  1. Of course, Modi could do well in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Karnataka, which account for 138 members to the Lok Sabha. Here, as BJP is directly pitted against the Congress in most of the seats it could have an edge over Congress.

  1. Modi has already joined the ranks of Jyoti Basu, Mohanlal Sukhadia, Sheila Dikshit and Naveen Patnaik in leading his party to victory in a state three times in a row.  In 2014, the combined force of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik may influence Modi’s fortunes a lot. It is now for the smaller parties to decide which way to go, and to settle their priorities, local or national. Tamil Nadu, Odhisha, Punjab, Haryana, Assam and the North-East account for 118 LS seats. Modi already has a rapport with J Jayalalithaa and Purno Sangma, while a large section of BJD is also reportedly keen to join the NDA.

  1. Many opinion polls have already predicted a positive swing for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and the elevation of master strategist Amit Shah has become an icing on the cake. There is one school of thought that argues that the party is waiting for an opportune time to flag Modi’s caste antecedent but it is caught in its usual dilemma of whether a casteist projection would conflict with his popular image as a development and good governance votary.

  1. Modi cautioned that unless the BJP fine-tuned its booth management, it could end up with more misses than hits. The campaign panel chief wants that the Delhi brass step out of their confines, visit each state, sit with the leaders and office-bearers, hold detailed discussions and then come up with a state-specific draft. It is now-or-never scenario for the BJP.

The BJP political masters started their campaign with confidence, of course, with strategy. They moved their coins attracting partners step by step, as they knew very well about the counter-attack of their opponents. Particularly, the AAP posed a spoiler and evidently aiding and abetting the corrupt congress. Unlike other parties BJP has to fight the battle within and outside also due to changes envisaged. Thus, the regional mathematics was learned ahead before declaring anything openly. Through mediators, BJP approached small but strong regional players in mobilizing numbers[2].

BJP is gaining in south India again: Contrary to the political predictions and secular-communal debates etc., more regional parties have been attracted to either Modi or BJP. Definitely, in Tamilnadu it scored a victory by roping up alliance with DMDK, MDMK, PMK andIJK[3]. In AP, TDP and others are ready to join NDA and because of the Telengana tangle, they have been calculative about the seats and the sentiments of Telugu people. Even, in Kerala, it is reported that the percentage of BJP is increasing and in Trivandrum, it could create some wonders. Thus, suddenly media starts realizing that Modi is helping NDA to win alliance from south[4] to north! When Dravidian parties other than DMK and AIADMK are accepting Modi, why not others is the mute question.

The Comedy play of AAP: After the resignation of AAP on Feb.14, 2014, the political scenario was clear with the major parties facing battle straight. However, the regional parties posed threat both to UPA and NDA and now with the intrusion of AAP in the north. Though AAP posed as anti-corruption crusader, its short-lived 49 days rule exposed the AAP-Cong tactful alliance. AAP adopted hot and cool policy with Congress, but very aggressive towards BJP, thus, creating a picture that it is supporting Congress indirectly. After losing power, it starts attacking BJP more and almost forgetting the list of multi-crore scams. Aravind Kejariwal was just creating nuisance to BJP by going to Gujarat and contesting from Varanasi.

The media game-plan of Instigating Muslims against Muslims: The media experts went on approaching Muslim leaders of all parties getting their expressed opinion that they would accept Modi as the PM candidate, as he was responsible for the 2002 riots. This point is harped upon again and again by the TV-channel pundits to corner the BJP spokesman. It is even suggested that if Modi apologize for 2002 riots, Muslims might turn towards him. Rajnath was reportedly apologized for that and it was expected that Modi would follow the suit. But immediately, the Maualanas were interviewed and opinion was created that even if Mody apologize, they would not vote for Modi.

Inconsistency of the Muslim leaders towards Modi: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind general secretary Maulana Mehmood Madani told, “In Gujarat, Jamiat workers on the ground have told me that in several Assembly segments, Muslims voted for Modi. There is a perceptible change of heart and circumstances are different now. I agree the times are changing. Muslims in Gujarat are economically better off than in several states which have so-called secular governments in power,” he told Rahul Kanwal in an exclusive interview on Seedhi Baat[5]. However, later clarified that he declined to either reject or endorse Modi’s possible candidature as Prime Minister[6]. In October 2012, as he called Modi a “tyrant”, the BJP tried to ban him to enter Gujarat[7].

Azam Khan type of Anti-Modism: On 28-01-2014, Azam Khan alarmed that there was a big conspiracy going on to divide Muslims … If Muslims were divided, Narendra Modi would form the next government (at the Centre) and therefore they have to remain united, he said while addressing a conference of madrassa managers and principals in Lucknow[8]. As usual he called Modi “murderer”. Many times, his angry was turned towards Amit Shah also. Harping upon the 2002 riots, it is claimed that Muslims would never forgive Modi and vote for him and therefore, BJP cannot get the votes of Muslims.

The tirade of Mayavati against Modi: On 21-02-2014, Mayawati told that they will put their “entire strength to prevent Narendra Modi from becoming the Prime Minister. It is in interest of the country to prevent the BJP from coming to power (in the next elections),” Ms. Mayawati told reporters outside Parliament[9]. She claimed that minority community members were apprehensive about  Modi. “If Modi wins, it will give a boost to the communal forces in the country,” the BSP supremo said, adding BJP is not trustworthy as “it says something and does something else”. But she was with BJP in forming government in UP twice.

AAP, SP and others turning against Modi: On 16-03-2014, BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP  from Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) Anurag Thakur on Sunday criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal for leading an unruly party and helping Congress in its effort to stop Narendra Modi from becoming the Prime Minister[10]. On 31-03-2014, Modi himself accused that Congress was conspiring to prevent him from becoming PM[11]. On the same day, Mulayam asserted that “SP will not let BJP succeeded in Lok Sabha polls and make Narendra Modi the next PM. If they (BJP) get defeated in Uttar Pradesh, Modi will never become PM,” Asking Muslims to remain alert, he said BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had close relationship and Congress’ role was also suspicious as far as providing facilities to Muslim community was concerned[12].

Non-BJP parties dictating about the PM candidate: Ironically, the non-BJP parties were suggesting their choice of Prime Minister candidate, if they wanted to be with NDA. Shiv Sena was suggesting that Sushma Swaraj would be an ideal choice of PM. Then it was changed to suggest that Sushma Swaraj might be better choice, yet some suggested Arun Jaitely. But, on 22-03-2014 Prakash Sigh Badal unwittingly declared that Arun Jaitely would be the Deputy PM[13]. Recently also, one BJP minister of MP said that Sushma could be the next PM[14]. On 25-03-2014, Even Digvijay of Congress also suggested this[15], when they never declared who was their PM candidate. Of course, Mulayam Singh, Mamta Banerjee have been telling that they would not allow Modi to become PM.

Ex-MPs, MLAs of Congress and other parties joining BJP: In spite of the domination of Modi, definitely, some regional parties started aligning with BJP forming partners of NDA. Thus, the apprehension made earlier that except Akali Dal all others are going away from NDA proves wrong. Not only that, even former ministers, MPs, MLAs of other parties like Congress, JD (S) etc have started joining BJP. One way, it has become headache for BJP, as they were not only criticizing Modi with harsh language or hate-speech, some of them have been of tainted category. And the BJP has to pay heavy price, if they come to power.

BJP is different, Modi is different – new argument of the media: Then started the argument that BJP has become Modi-party, one-man party and no other has any say in BJP. This is the media-floated argument put forward now, but there are few takers. The politicians know very well who is controlling whom and how the parties, leaders of parties and others work and function at the time of winning and losing elections. But why the media play doublegame against BJP is not known. At one side, they project that BJP / NDA has been gaining vote %, Modi the favourite PM and so on , on the other side, they also accuse that BJP is sticking to the communal agenda, Amit Shah is doing that in UP and so on.

Modi could win and get votes from all: The conservative but posed as progressive media also slowly accepted the Modi-factor accepted that there would be a change in voting pattern with reversals also. Thus, “the Hindu” (March 21.2014) reported[16], “A large-scale attitudinal survey shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance has gained significantly across most parts of the country as well as among most social groups. The only exceptions are the Scheduled Tribes and Muslims.” Thus, finally, the media has to accept that Modi would be acceptable to all and people would vote for him.

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties – Why Modi is targeted maximum?

April 1, 2014

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties – Why Modi is targeted maximum?

Why Modi is targeted maximum?: During the March 2014, the Congress leaders have vehemently targeted and attacked Narendra Modi with very harsh words and expressions in Hindi countering his comments and as well as heaping new abusive rhetoric. Modi has been targeted by all comparing him Hitler, Stalin, Pol-pot, Coebelles and so on. He is repeatedly mentioned as killer, murderer, butcher, man-eater[1] and what not. Perhaps, no other Indian politician has been targeted like this than Modi. Whenever Modi spoke, it was telecast immediately, the comments against his speech was recorded from the opponent parties like Congress, SJD, etc and broadcast. In fact, the comments of Nitish and his spokesman were shown as if they cover point by point.

“Chaiwala” aspire to become PM: The “Tea-vendor aspiring to becoming PM” attracted the detractors maximum, thus   In November 2013, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Naresh Agarwal[2] ridiculed that “tea-vendor cannot become a PM”. And in January 2014, the arrogant and bigheaded Mani Shakar Iyer sarcastically retorted that if he comes to their venue, he can serve tea – Aiyar had mocked Modi’s prime ministerial ambitions and said a place would be identified for the Gujarat chief minister to distribute tea at AICC . When asked, when he would apologize for making such personal remarks, refused[3]. Thus, the “Chaiwala”, Chai-bechnewala, etc., promoted “chai pe charcha” attracting masses and evidently the foreign media[4]. Thus, this obviously made the rival political parties to counter. Though, they have been questioning Modi-economics, Gujarat Model of development etc., they are confined to the elite and not interested among others like “chaiwala”.

Many Congress leaders joining BJP rattled Congress[5]: At the top level, Congress has been the most affected, reflecting its image of a sinking ship in these elections. MP’s  Jagadambika Pal from Domariaganj, D. Purandeshwari (daughter of TDP founder N.T.Rama Rao) from Vishakhapatnam, Rao Inderjit Singh from Gurgaon, Vitthal Radadiya from Porbandar and Satpal Maharaj from Pouri Garhwal are some of the big names to have quit the party to join BJP. Sanjay Kaka Patil of the NCP and Rajesh Verma of the BSP have also joined the saffron party. In far flung Arunachal Pradesh, strongman Gegong Apang has also switched over to the BJP. The first big name to change affiliation was Ram Vilas Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party. Thus, “Congress – sinking ship” discussion openly came out.

Modi-critics joining BJP: Pramod Muthalik, the Ram Sena chief joined BJP, but immediately, his membership was denied[6]. Ironically, when his followers attacked Pub-girls that created controversy, he was targeted by the media for his medieval mindset, hooliganism and Talibanism. At that time, he criticized the BJP and other leaders in his interviews given to the media. The worst critic of JD (U) Sabir Ali also joined BJP, when he was expelled from the party, but within a day, his membership was cancelled / annuled[7]. Of course, it was reported that he himself wanted to hold, till something was resolved[8].  Of course, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, the Muslim face of BJP opposed his entry. Interestingly, all are happening within a week.

M J Akabar – a critic turned BJPwala: In some cases, those who abused Modi have joined BJP and eating their words. Thus, when M. J. Akbar joined BJP and nominated as its spokesman, what he told about Modi earlier haunted and dunted[9]:  “Modi is an ideologue, with a difference. The difference is hysteria. It is an edgy hysteria, which can mesmerise; and it easily melts into the kind of megalomania that makes a politician believe that he is serving the larger good through a destructive frenzy against a perceived enemy. In Hitler’s case, the enemy was the Jew; in Modi’s case the enemy is the Muslim. Such a politician is not a fool; in fact, he may have a high degree of intellect. But it is intellect unleavened by reason, and untempered by humanism”. Now, he has to defend Modi as a Muslim or secular journalist or spokesman of BJP itself!

How and why Modi is dubbed as Hiter: Advani sidelined, Murali Manohar Joshi was shifted from Varanasi facilitating Modi to contest, Jaswant Singh, the veteran leader was expelled when he tried to contest from the same constituency for which he was denied ticket and other events made critics and detractors of Modi to accuse him of dictatorship, one-upmanship and so on. Perhaps, this emboldens the Congress and other non-BJP parties to criticize him as Hitler and so on. But, after all, this is their internal matter and other parties need not worry, as they have more problems of dissatisfaction, dissent, and defection than BJP. Yet, they and of course, media try to criticize BJP.

17-years coalition partner becomes the worst critic: BJP and JD (S) had been fighting elections for the past 17 years and suddenly, when Modo was declared as the PM candidate, Nitish broke away from the NDA. This created a lot of heat between the partners. Once Nitish praised Modi for his governance, but now he started criticizing him. On March 4, 2014 Nitish Kumar[10] called Modi “a follower of (German dictator Adolf) Hitler and Goebbels. After Sonia, perhaps, Nitish has been the worst attacker of Modi. He called Modi “a follower of (German dictator Adolf) Hitler and Goebbels.”  Here, Goebbles was the Nazi propagandist Paul Joseph Goebbels.  But, in spite of multi-crore, mega-crore scams and many corrupt practices, Rahul and Sonia go on claim their virtues and none questioned them for their vices.

Secular historians belive that Modi cannot function as Hitler: Ramachandara Guha, wrote[11], “His more alarmist critics speak of Modi as an Indian Hitler or Mussolini. In fact, a politician the Gujarat chief minister resembles more, at least in his personal style, is the late Hugo Chavez. To be sure, their political ideologies and economic models are at variance. Even so, Modi is akin to Chavez in presenting himself as a lone outsider taking on the Establishment, in his fusion of his State with his self, and in the demonization of his opponents”. After discussing at lengh, he concludes[12], “ But to worry about the return of the Emergency or an era of ‘fascism’ is to succumb to a premature and unfortunate alarmism. It may be that in May 2014 we shall have an arrogant and sectarian prime minister instead of the weak and incompetent prime minister we now have. But Indian democracy, not to speak of India itself, will survive.”.

Rahul compared Modi with Hitler: On March 7, 2014, Rahul indirectly attacked Modi comparing Hitler and Gandhi[13] i.e, Hiler used to shout but not Gandhi at a rally in Aurangabsad, Maharastra( महात्मा गांधी और हिटलर की तुलनाकरतेहुए राहुल गांधी ने कहा कि जर्मन तानाशाह चिल्लाता था क्योंकि उसमें विश्वास का अभाव था। लेकिन क्या गांधीजी कभी चिल्लाए, नहीं चिल्लाए क्यों कि उनमें विश्वास था।).In another Maharashtra town this morning, Mr Gandhi told a young audience at an engineering college, “My becoming or not becoming PM does not matter. What is most important is that everyone here, specially women and youth in country, feel that this is their own country.” Here too, he talked of love. And Mr Modi, again without naming him. The German dictator Hitler, Mr Gandhi said, shouted because he lacked confidence. But Mahatma Gandhi did not need to shout. “There is no need for saying things aggressively. You can say it with love. Many people will be with you,” he said. However, suddenly these sites[14] start disappearing!

Chaiwala, Chowkidar to Hitler – the changing criticism of Congress: On march 10, 2014 Rahul compared Modi with Hitler and also alleged the he stole the land of the farmers[15]. Rahul , without naming Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, launched a blistering attack, comparing Modi to Adolf Hitler and mocking him by saying the country does not need a chowkidar (watchman). Speaking at public meeting here Deoli in Tonk district of Rajasthan on Tuesday, he hinted at Modi when he said: “Adolf Hitler thought people had no knowledge and he himself knew everything.” Hitler was another leader who only spoke of himself and made tall claims, Rahul  said.“A true leader does not lecture his people but goes among them and listens to them. A true leader, like Mahatma Gandhi, does not have any ghamand (arrogance),” Lambasting the BJP leader, he said what was happening in Gujarat was chori as land belonging to farmers were being snatched for select industrial houses[16].

After Massod threatening BJP lists out Hate-speeches of Congresswalas: BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi who read out a list of comments made by the Congress leadership including the infamous “Maut ke Saudagar” used by Sonia Gandhi said the party has negatively drawn comparisons between Mr. Modi and Adolf Hitler by  Rahul Gandhi,  demon king Ravan by Salman Khurshid and has also called him “Lahu Purush” by Manish Tewari[17]. “This goes on to show what kind of atmosphere the Congress wants in the country. They do not want to fight the election on the issue of governance, development etc., and have deviated from dignity and decorum that are hallmarks of a democracy,” Mr. Trivedi said.

Modi a “combination of Hitler and Stalin”: From the land of God’s own country, on March 26, 2014 at Kozhikode, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala tapped on the anxieties of the high-range farmer community with regard to the Kasturirangan report, pressed the Congress party line for the need for secular politics and called Narendra Modi a “combination of Hitler and Stalin”, but spared no word about the price rise and corruption scams trailing the UPA 2 government[18]. Thus, he excelled his cong-masters to criticize Modi!

Do not allow Modi to become PM: The non-BJP parties used cry that they would oppose the communal BJP at any cost. The APP like parties just like Communists shoult that they oppose both BJP and Congress. Of course, the so-celled third front, federal front etc., are also scream that they oppose both BJP and Congress dubbing them as communal. Thus, the secular and communal debate has become useless now. Some interpret that Congress has cleverly posed caste against communalism by assuring that they support reservation in the private sector also. BJP doubted that Congress and Communists would again come together to oppose them[19]. Immediately, A. K. Antony hinted at the possibility of the formation of a fresh “secular” front to keep BJP out of power[20].

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties!

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties!

Vedaprakash

The applicability of expression “hate-speech” to India: Now “hate-speech” is discussed a lot in the media. The applicability of such expression to Indian context has to be considered in a careful way, as the Indians have got independence only just 66 years ago, in spite of the history going beyond 5000 years. In other words, the Indians were ruled by the Colonial forces and the Mohammedan powers that treated Indians subdued in many aspects. Both powers disparaged, denigrated and maligned them in many ways through their appreciation and depreciation. The conditions set out for “hate speech” in the present context were already found in their attitude, behavior and actions against them. Just like “gay rights” etc., when new issues are brought in, Indians have to deal them cautiously.

Indians derided by the rulers of the past 1300 years: Even after the freedom, as the legacy of the past rulers has been continued with the enforced factors, and after the LPG regime again the neocolonial forces dominate and control the thought processes of Indians with new parameters of modernization, westernization, industrialization and now Americanization. The slangs of different influential foreign masters exhibited in various spheres. Thus, the media has such characteristic mores. Above all, the Indians have been under the constant attack of both these forces and the ideologically opposed communists also. Though, the Communists of all sorts are opposed by many political parties, ideologically, they have been dominating in the Indian media, curriculum and polity.

“Hate-speech”, now invented and its understanding: “Hate speech is generally understood as, that speech is[1]  “ … usually thought to include communications of animosity or disparagement of an individual or a group on account of a group characteristic such as race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or sexual orientation” and it is carried to be quoted by others[2] as authority[3]. The westernized or non-Indian way of expressing journalists have started using this expression without going into the details. Now, we find all Indian English media uses such expression, as if the Indian speakers, particularly, politicians have been violating all provisions of Acts and rules but scot-free.

From Indian English media to Indian polity: Incidentally, the same Indian English media has introduced many words and expressions of hate speech – lumpen elements[4], bandwagon, goons[5], thugs, fringe, medieval forces, secular, communal, fascist, middle class, fundamentalist, saffron terror[6], rightwing terror[7], and so on. They have been used as adjectives with one or each other with other or words taken from this list. Thus, we can see –

  • Fascist communal forces
  • middle class mentality
  • communal forces
  • communal goons
  • rightwing thugs
  • medieval bandwagon
  • lumpen fringe elements
  • saffron terror elements
  • rightwing terrorists

and such other combinations have been so popular in usage. Specifically, these expressions have been mostly used against BJP, RSS and other so-called Sangh Parivar organizations by the media experts and standardized such usage, as if they are applicable to them only. Even their counterparts say leftwing, Green terror, real medieval forces, fascist fringe bandwagons and others have never been branded.

Secular and communal “hate-speeches”: As the media and the non-BJP parties including the Muslim, Islamic and other categories always call the BJP and Sangh Parivar as communal. Emboldened by such persistent, relentless and pushy propaganda, they started using other attacking expressions. BJP is anti-minority, anti-Muslim, anti-Islamic etc, whereas all other non-BJP parties are pro-minority, pro-Muslim and Islam supporting categories. The government media, functions, iftar parties are also used to carry on such propaganda. Thus, this has created some sort of inferiority complex in the minds of Sangh Parivar, their leaders, members and sympathizers and Hindus as a whole of India.

Sonia started “hate-speech” in electioneering: The “hate-speech” campaign started with Sonia during 2007 elections, when she called Modi “Maut ka sauthagar”. Generally, she reads prepared speech by somebody, that means, she consciously accepted and used such expression to target Modi. Here the role of scrpt writer is also questioned[8]. On 28 January 2014 Aam Aadmi party leader Arvind Kejriwal tweeted scathing comment over Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi calling them moron and murderer. He tweeted, “Stuck between a moron and a murderer…what now India”. Sonia has called BJP communal many times, Modi “Maut ka sauthagar” (messager of Death) etc., followed by the rhetoric of Digvijaya and Kapil Sibal many times in their interviews.  Sonia before Gujarat assembly elections referred Narendra Modi to “Maut Ka Saudagar” (person who sells death) and on 1st Feb 2014 accusing BJP to spread hate among people she said, “I firmly believe you will not allow those who sow the seeds of poison (Zaher Ki Kheti) to succeed. They sport Muslim skull cap, move with maulanas, yet they claim themselves 100% hallmark of secular category. However, when Modi started speaking in Hindi in a colloquial way addressing the common man with sarcasm, his words are watched, recorded and interpreted as “hate speech”. Nahid Hasan the SP candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana constituency hinted at Mayawati’s proximity to Modi. “Thrice Mayawati has sat in Modi’s lap and after elections she will do so again. Both are unmarried,” he added[9]. For Musaffarnagar riots all parties have been blamed by the media[10], but the Supreme Court[11] the ruling party SP for not preventing and controlling the riots[12].

For convenience, the famous ones are listed as follows[13]:

  1. Zeher Ki Kheti– This comment made by Sonia Gandhi is the latest in the line (and perhaps one of most pinching ones). Speaking at a public rally in northern Kanataka, the UPA chairperson accused Narendra Modi of indulging in “Zeher Ki Kheti” (Sowing seeds of poison).

  1. Maut Ka Saudagar-Sonia‘s remark, wherein she referred to Modi as “Maut Ka Saudagar” (merchant of death) in the Gujarat assembly elections in 2007.

  1. Modi’s “Khooni Panja” and “Zaalim Hath” Attack-Modi has never been the kind of person who would meekly listen to outrageous comments from opposition and remain quite. He has perhaps been even more famous for his reference to the Congress party’s ‘palm’ symbol as “Khooni Panja” (Bloody Claws) and “Zaalim Hath” (Cruel Hand).

  1. Modi’s “Shazada” and “Madam” Barb– Modi is also known for referring to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi as “Shazada” (prince) and “Madam” respectively.

  1.  Somnath Bharti’s “Want to Spit on Faces” Attack-he expressed his desire to “spit on the faces” of Arun jaitley and Harish Salve.

  1. Kejriwal Retweets “Stuck Between Moron and Murderer”- “Stuck between a moron and a murderer… what now, India!?”

  1. Manhonah Singh’s “Presiding over Massacre” Statement  – He referred to BJP’s PM Candidate Modi as someone who “presided over massacre of citizens” during the Gujurat riots of 2002.

  1. Rahul Gandhi’s “Comb to a Bald Man” Quip– Rahul has not been too far away in the rank of people making most controversial remarks as well. But this one was really quite funny.

Why against BJP or “Hindus”?: The expressions Communal BJP and secular Congress have been so popularized that even the BJPwalas are quite amused to be called so. And the non-BJP parties have always taken such privilege of calling BJP communal and thus they always pose as secular. Of course, the persistent media also always brand the parties and certified. Only few like Advani have understood the mischief and countered them by using expression “pseudo-secularism”. The provisions of IPC and Peoples Representation Act could penalize the “hate-sppech”, but many times the speakers have scot-free for example, Arunthathi Roy, Jilani in the north and the DK and atheist elements of the South, though dozens of cases filed have been pending against them. Incidentally, it has to be noted that these speakers have targeted “Hindus” only.

[8] Lyricist and script writer Javed Akhtar has won many laurels for his dialogue writing skills, but this is one instance, he says, where he can’t take the credit. The political grapevine attributes the maut ka saudagar reference Sonia Gandhi made during her Gujarat poll campaign to him. “I am truly embarrassed for being given credit for somebody else’s work,” says Akhtar. Ever since Sonia Gandhi used the term during one of her election speeches in Gujarat, there has been speculation in political circles about who actually coined the term. Several names have been doing the rounds, the most prominent being Akhtar.
