Sri Krishna blasphemed by the rabid anti-Hindu atheist Veeramani, Stalin’s dubious stand in the politics and elections following his father! [2]

Stalin anti-hindu, Indian Express

Stalin, as usual gave a statement in either way: Answering a question on Veeramani’s outburst against Lord Krishna, which went vital, Stalin, said, “It was not made during our campaign[1]. He chose to do it at a Dravidar Kazhagam event.” It is funny to note his illogical justification, because, can any crime committed in one place is a cfrime, but not so, when commited at some other place? Dravidar Kazhagam complex at Vepery might be a private property with all facilities of having meetings, rallies etc., wt a vast ground and auditorium, but, government has every right to take action, if any law of the land is violated in that place. However, Stalin maintained that Veeramani did not speak with an intention to malign Lord Krishna[2]. “He gave some examples. Some media and RSS have twisted it for false election propaganda. It is not true, but if it is true then it is wrong,” Stalin said[3]. Again, this is also typical escapism and trying to shrug responsibility. He called it a conspiracy[4].

Veeramani blasphemy, RSS planned

Stalin put forward a conspiracy hypothesis: How, he himself has been coming out with such proposition and hypothesis and, all his cadre would follow the suit. With their media support, they aggressively propagate such stuff also. He further said his wife Durga visits temples twice a day and offers prayers regularly[5]. “I never objected to her going to places of worship.” So what, is that a reason that the males could do all sorts of nonsence, as has been done for the last 70 years. He recalled that the DMK founder, C N Annadurai had categorically said the policy of the party was ‘Ondre Kulam, Oruvane Devan’ (One God, one community). Stalin recalled that even his father and late DMK president M Karunanidhi had said in the film Parasakthi, that they were not against temples but only oppose temples becoming dens of hooligans[6]. Though, they have been repeating this dialogue, now, there are no takers, as the recent statue theft, smuggling and related frauds have fully exposed their activities.

Veeramani blasphemy, RSS planned-News Today

BJP has not been mature enough to stick to ideology in Tamilnadu context: The BJP and its alliance partners in Tamil Nadu are claiming consolidation of Hindu votes in their favour owing to the “anti-Hindu” speeches of leaders of the opposition DMK and DK, but the DMK rules out this issue impacting its poll prospects[7]. “People are now saying the AIADMK-led alliance believes in God while the DMK-led alliance is atheist and anti-Hindu. Nowadays there is no distinction between Aryan gods (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) and Dravidian deities (Murugan, Amman and others). In Tamil Nadu, people now go to all temples,” Bharatiya Janata Party’s state OBC Morcha chief S.K. Kharventhan told IANS[8].According to him, there may be four-five percent vote shift in favour of the AIADMK- led alliance owing to such “anti-Hindu comments” of the rival alliance. Elangovan dismissed the claims. “The party rallies and the meetings addressed by our candidates attract huge crowds, which itself shows the support for our alliance.” “May be some fence sitters may vote for AIADMK over this issue. But that number will be very negligible,” he added.

veeramani remarks - news today

BJP has to go long way in Tamilnadu polity: In Tamilnadu, there is no BJP vote bank as such, as the Dravidian polity has been dominating for the last 70 years. Any Dravidian party has to invoke EVR, Anna, MGR, Jayalalita, Karunandhi…. etc., depending upon their front-affiliation. The BJP has been new entrant without any Dravidian ideology and political maturity, in the sense, it could not get into Dravidian political mosaic. It would be an anathema to invoke the Dravidian leaders, yet, they have started doing. As Modi proposed, the Central Station has been immediately changed to MGR Central Station. For the Dravidian parties, Atal Bihari was the right man in the wrong party, but, as fr as Modi is concerned, he is hated like anything.

Karuanidhi abused Hindu as thief; questioned Rama, in which college he took engineering degree to build bridge and so on!

Karuanidhi abused Hindu as thief; questioned Rama, in which college he took engineering degree to build bridge and so on!

From EVR times to 2019: EVR declared that, “There is no god, there is no god, and there is no god at all. He who invented god is a fool, He who propagates god is a scoundrel, He who worships god is a barbarian,” but, for him and as well as his followers, the “god,” has been invariably, the Hindu God. The Christians already opposed and the Mohammedans never bothered, as they knew, EVR had no guts to criticize their god. Thus, his most of the atheistic tracks have been against Hindus only. About one hundred tracts, pamphlets and small books disparage, denigrate and blaspheme Hindu religion, Hindu Gods, Hindu scriptures, Hindu festivals, Hindu ceremonies and so on. EVR has been known for breaking Vinayaka idol and his followers garlanding chappals and beating with chappals of Rama picture. Even burning of Rama picture was carried on last year also.

Karunandhi had been dexterous to exploit every occasion to attack Hindu religion etc., in his own way!

Karunandhi had been dexterous to exploit every occasion to attack Hindu religion etc., in his own way!

Annadurai’s ambivalent position of belief in god: Though, C. N. Annadurai reportedly told, “I would neither break the Ganesha idol nor the coconut (the offering),”that does not catch water.  What he asserted was that negative, instead of telling doing any positive action. He also reportedly claimed that, “There is only one caste and one Devan,” here, he did not use the word “God”! Generally, the expression “Devan” is used to denote “Jesus Christ” in Tamil.

Atheists exploiting Krishna etc

Karunanidhi’s tenure as an atheist and anti-Hindu: Karunanidhi’s anti-Hindu uttering has deeper roots going back to the Anti-Superstition Conference at Salem, the steel city convened by none other than Periyar during early 70’s which saw an effigy of Lord Ram taken out in procession and was beaten by sandals[9]. The effigy was finally publicly burnt. It catapulted DMK to power with 184 seats out of 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election and 17 seats out 32 Lok Sabha seats in the General Elections in 1971.  Karunanidhi had stated while addressing a public meeting in 2002 organized by minority outfits to protest the anti-conversion ordinance of the then Jayalalithaa Government, “Do Hindus have a religion? Who is a Hindu? If you ask some right thinking people they’ll say that Hindu actually means a thief. I do not consider that to be a despicable thief, but a thief who has stolen the hearts”. The reference even embarrassed some minority leaders sharing the dais, pointed out media reports from Chennai then. However, Karunanidhi clarified that he had merely quoted from a Hindi Encyclopedia published from Varanasi. “It had defined a Hindu as cruel, servant and bandit. Nevertheless, I chose to ignore that definition and softened it to mean as thieves of hearts,” he said. There is nothing surprising in the statement made by Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi has not only been carrying the political mantle of DMK founder C N Annadurai but also steered the party to power in the state for five times during 1969-1971, 1971-1976, 1989-1991, 1996-2001 and 2006-2011.

TTD met Kru for Ramanujar Jan.2016

DMK has been anti-Hindu only: In fact the Dravidian Movement has always espoused rhetoric of anti-Sanskrit, anti-Hindi and anti-North as these were associated with Brahmin community. The Dravidian movement and later DMK saw southern Brahmins and Northern Indian as Aryans. At one point of time Dravidian Movement had advocated seceding from India as well.  Often DMK supremo Karunanidhi evokes the anti-Hindu sentiments thus reflecting the core ideology of E V Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar. In light of Sethusamundram controversy a few years back Karunanidhi had challenged that Lord Ram is not a historical persona but a figment of human imagination. Therefore, the iconoclastic activities of the atheist gangs cannot be taken as reformist, as they used to claim, but, consistently, have been against Hindus only. Even the greeting believers on the occasion of festivals and celebrations have also been selective i.e, they greet only Mohammedans and Christians and not Hindus. Contrary, they abuse and ridicule Hindus on the occasion of their festivals. This has been also carried on consistently by Karunanidhi and followed by Kanimozhi and Stalin.

WAC-3, Viduthalai front page

The World Atheist Conference 2018 conducted with tall claims: The World Atheist Conference 2018 (hereinafter mentioned as WAC) was conducted with tall claims made on January 5th to 7th 2016 at Trichy. It was commenced here with an emphasis on setting right in equalities in the society, quelling superstitions, and propagating rationalistic thinking. Titled ‘Atheism – Hope of Humanity’ and what not, the three-day program organised jointly by the Dravidar Kazhagam, Atheist Centre, Vijayawada and The Rationalists’ Forum witnessed delegates representing rationalist organisations in different parts of India and other countries, taking part in the inaugural and plenary sessions, and presenting their views on an array of topics that included atheism, religious fundamentalism, and medicine and atheism[1]. Presiding over, K. Veeramani, president, Dravidar Kazhagam, said atheism in India means much beyond non-belief in supernatural and religious rituals, and that the prime focus was on rectifying untouchability in the society perpetuated in the name of religion, and denial of education on the basis of birth[2].

WAC, Trichy - foreign delegates, Nadaswaram

Features of the Conference (as claimed by the organizers): As claimed by the organizers, Atheist – Humanists around the world participate in the conference, besides the leaders of various atheist, rationalist and humanist organizations from all the States of the country, Paper presentations by atheist scholars and activists followed by deep deliberations on the different perspectives of atheist philosophy, form the major part of the conference proceedings, Sharing of religion-free living culture in various countries / societies and churning up the substance on living free from the fear of god, enabling humanity to progress and peace, Revealing the success, in establishing the egalitarian society free from the belief of non existing ‘god’ through the services of organizations and movements by atheist philosophers and Documenting the pioneering role rendered by atheist movements in the East during the early historical period.

Garry McLelland-WAC, Trichy

The Rationalists’ Forum: The Rationalists’ Forum claims that it, “is a Humanist Movement founded by Periyar in 1971 and presently patronised by Dr. K. Veeramani, President, Dravidar Kazhagam. It is a unique movement, because of the composition of membership and the activities. People who are committed to Periyar ideology and employed in various organisations – government, public private co-operative have shouldered the responsibility of preaching and practicing rationalistic ideals”. The activities include organising meetings, seminars, science exhibition, superstition exposure show to develop scientific temper and humanism among the public. Many State and Central Ministers, Vice Chancellors of Universities, educationalists, officials who are at helm of affairs to-day were the earlier functionaries of The Rationalists’ Forum.

The Organizers of the Atheist Conference[3]: The organizers have been:

  1. Dravidar Kazhagam (Tamil Nadu), Atheist Centre (Vijayawada) and
  2. The Rationalists’ Forum (Tamil Nadu) jointly organise World Atheist Conference 2018.

WAC is the ideological confluence of atheist, rationalist and humanist fraternity from the countries – England, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United States etc. and from all the States of India. WAC proceedings cover seminar and sittings with lecture delivery and paper presentation on the various dimensions of atheism , rationalism and humanism. Film show, video presentations, science exhibition, book fair are planned. A massive public procession with demonstrations exposing superstition is scheduled. A Souvenir containing essays, real stories, personal experiences of eminent persons on atheism and allied ideologies gets released on the occasion. Many leaders and persons of eminence from State and Central Governments, educationalists intellectuals participate in the proceedings.

WAC, Trichy - stage-1

Were foreign delegates conscious of the Dravidian atheism?: The foreign delegates attended the conference, but, what they spoke was not revealed by the organizers, the media and the participants:

  1. Gary McLelland[4], Chief Executive, International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), London[5], and
  2. Avinash Patil, Executive President, Maharashtra Andhrashraddha Nirmoolan Samithi, Pune, Maharashtra, were the other guest speakers.
  3. Elizabeth O’ Cassey[6], Director of Advocasy – IHEU, Brussels, Belgium, inaugurated an exhibition of books at the Atheist Book Centre. Rustam Singh, Atheist Alliance International, USA;
  4. Suba Veerapandian, General Secretary, Dravidian Tamil Federation; and
  5. Rajaratnam, Pro-Chancellor, Periyar Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University), Vallam, Thanjavur also spoke.

Five books were released on the occasion: ‘Bhagavad Gita – Myth or Mirage,’ and ‘March of Atheism’ authored by Veeramani, Compilation of ‘Old Testament of Indian Atheism’ by Surendra Anjat, ‘Essays on Matters which Matter’ (A Rationalist’s Perception) by S. Rajaratnam, and Compilation of ‘Revolt’ published by Periyar in 1928 and 1929. It is evident that Compilation of ‘Old Testament of Indian Atheism’ by Surendra Anjat, and conspicuously, there was no book released about the position of atheism in Islam or existence of “Islamic atheists”. As happened in 2011, this year also, most of the foreign delegates came and attended did not know about DK, EVR, Dravidian atheism etc., as they talk about Humanism, human rights, etc.

WAC-3, women delegates from north

Inaugural session: During the inagural session, A. Raja, Sp. Suba Veerapandian, Gary McLelland, Elezabet O’Cassey, Avinash Patil and others spoke and thereafter, papers were presented. Ironically, A. Raja, former Union Minister of Telecommunication (who was in jail for 2G scam, came out on bail and acquitted by the Court recently), said he has been deriving inner strength from atheism. Ironically, the DK-ideologists talked as usual rhetoric with verbose without any new points. As usual, they made “stage-type” talk in Tamil and using few words and sentences in English to show off that it was an international conference. Ironically, the delegates came from Pujab, Maharastra, Andhrapradesh and Kartataka were talking in their mother tongue and Hindi when they conversed with each other. The same thing happened during the All India Atheist Conference held  at Periyar Tidal in May 2010, where, one invitee spoke in Hindi and it was translated by the DK ideologist. Now also, K. Veeramani during his speech accepted that the language bearer exists among the delegates coming from those states. Incidentally, their anti-Hindi stand gets exposed here, as with Tamil alone or any particular regional language alone, they cannot do anything.

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar (1)

July 27, 2017

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar (1)

Dr Ambedkar conference - GKVK- entrance

The Government of Karnataka and Congress sponsored International Conference: The three day “Dr Ambedkar International Conference” was held at the complex of GKVK [Gandhi Krishi Vigjana Kendra], Bellary Road, Bangalore – 560 065. On 12th July, an advertisement appeared in the leading dailies and newspapers that “Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 QUEST FOR EQUITY” would be held giving the website reference[1]. When visited the site, it was found that one had to register as a “Speaker” or “Participant”, but, while trying for “Speaker”, message appeared that it was over. So our members registered as “Participant”. Then, we received message in our phones, “You can collect your badges at our counters at Vetenary college, opposite to CBI officer, Bellary Road, Hebbal, Bengaluru on 21st, 22nd and 23rd July, 2017 between 9 AM and 6 PM. There will be no entry to the venue without authorized badge……..”. Thus, it was evident that conference had been so restrictive and not opened to all. After reaching Bangalore and the venue only, we could understand that the Conference was completely sponsored by the Government of Karnataka and thus by the Congress.

GKVK hall entrance

More invitees, but less space – over-crowded Conference: We collected badges and proceeded to the venue on July 21st afternoon. There was heavy security and checks at different levels before entering the auditorium. The participants were not allowed, but asked to go to the gallery, but, when we went there, where we were informed that the space was meant for the “Speakers”. There was commotion at every level, as more and more categories of persons [VIP, Participant, Speaker, Press, Volunteer and so on] started pouring inside the venue and hall. Nearly more than three hours, all were harassed like anything to go here and there. Then, somehow, we were accommodated in the gallery. In the hall, there was shouting between the audience and the press, for two reasons, the press people were not accommodated properly and they were blamed for obstructing the view. All these were happening, before the arrival of the Chief guests etc. Around 5 pm, the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi entered the stage with many VIPs.

Hiccups galore- Star of Mysore - coverage-of 21-07-2017-2

Nandita Das’ gaffes or the confusion of Congress: The bollywood actress Nandita Das was compeering[2], but involving series of gaffes as dignitaries were welcomed by ministers, the script read over other names. For instance, while MLC Govindarajulu welcomed Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Sathyarthi, Das read it as agriculture minister Krishna Byre Gowda. When leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna M Kharge was invited by Byre Gowda, Das said, “He will be welcomed by minister R. Roshan Baig.” When the audience burst out with laughter, Das realizing the gaffe, said: “It is not my fault….they (ministers) are changing. I am just reading from the script”. In other words, the bouquets were handed over to the persons, not matching with the names of the persons announced. Even the dignitaries on the dais were embarrassed by this turn of events[3].  It was also pointed out that not only Rs.22 crores were spent in extravagant manner, but, also 3,000 invitations were given away, while the capacity of the auditourium was only 1,000, thus, virtually creating a stampede.

Man shouted slogans at conference-siddharamaiah started speaking-1

Siddharamaiah’s tirade against BJP: Siddaramaiah said the recent spate of communal and caste-based attacks has shown that people cannot afford to rest. Endorsing Rahul’s views, the CM said: “Today, we are told that being a good Indian means we have to ignore the inequality and exploitation in our midst; that we need to adhere to rigid norms regarding food, clothing, language and free speech; that we have to privilege the majoritarian view of India. I reject such a view as it is totally opposed to the letter and spirit of our Constitution.” He the idea of India as a plural society is at the crossroads. “Values that our civilization and culture held in high esteem are facing a critical test in view of the onslaught of divisive and exclusivist ideas,” he said[4]. His desperate tirade against made him exposed that he was perhaps preparing for the last battle.

Martin Luther King III-Modi has unleashed a ferocious animosity against minorities.

Martin Luther King – III – his unwanted talk on Indian society etc: ‘Modi’s election, like Trump’s, has unleashed violence against minorities’ American human rights advocate Martin Luther King III was unflattering in his comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern for the poor and the rule of law[5]. Drawing parallels between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Martin Luther King III, the son of American civil rights movement icon Martin Luther King Jr, said here on Friday [21-07-2017] that both have limited regard for the poor and for law and order. King III, a human rights advocate and community activist was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day conference “Quest for equity – Reclaiming social justice, revisiting Ambedkar”, in which around 300 scholars, activists and policymakers will discuss the ideas of Dr BR Ambedkar. King III, whose father championed the rights of black Americans in the mid 20th century, said both countries are led by individuals who have limited regard for the poor and disinherited[6].

Martin speech - DC_BLR_2017-07-23_maip1_19

Martin Luther and Ambedkar compared: He drew parallels between US President Donald Trump and Modi and said that both had unleashed “ferocious animosity” against the minorities which had be countered by the people rising up against it[7]. He pointed to similarities between the Dalit lives matter and black lives matter movements in the two countries and outlined the ongoing Dalit agitation in Gujarat. He also spoke of the parallels in the lives, thoughts, struggles and philosophies of his father Martin Luther King Jr and Ambedkar.  “The political situation is the same in the US and India. There is the alt right and Hindu nationalists who are dominating. We are both led by men who have unleashed ferocious animosity against the minorities. In India, cow vigilantes are lynching Muslims, Dalits and unfortunate women. People who believe India is a Hindu nation are being placed in positions of power. We must resist,” he said. India’s caste system, he contended, was a prison without walls for more than 200 million Dalits[8].

1000 labourers worked for the conference

20 crore spent Mega International Conference with contradictions, confusions and politicized speeches: A sum of ₹20 crore was spent on three-day international conference ‘Quest for equity–reclaiming social justice, revisiting Ambedkar’, to mark the 126th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar from July 21 to 23 2017 on GKVK campus of the UAS-B[9]. Nearly a dozen round-table conferences had been organised, Public Works Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, who has in-charge of the event, told presspersons, adding that Web telecast had been arranged for the benefit of students and faculty of 13 universities in the State[10]. On July 21st [Friday] evening, the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi came to inaugurate the conference. Civil rights activist Martin Luther King III and host of Social and political thinkers, philosophers, academicians, activists and others had been the speakers. During the inaugural function, there were some glaring short comings in compeering made by Nandita Das, lighting of lamp etc. When Nandita Das was calling the names for the distribution of mementos, there was utter confusion and in fact, she retorted that she was not responsible for such goof-up[11]. At the time of lighting lamp, almost, all on the stage were with shoes and chappals.

GKVK - Sathyarti, Prakash Ambedkar speaking

Kailash Sathyarthi speech: Nobel laureate Kailash Sathyarthi said it was not enough to just remember Dr Ambedkar from time to time. “We must live with Babasaheb inside each of us,” Sathyarthi said. Sathyarthi said it was a great testament to the continuing power of Dr Ambedkar that India’s presidential elections was a contest between two Dalits, Ramnath Kovind and Meira Kumar. He was narrating his story as to how he was to suffer, though he was a born Brahmin, but tried to bring SCs to enter the Nathwada temple. The temple priest reportedly attacked him and he was ordered and forced to clean his legs as repentance. Kailash refused to do that and changed his name to “Sathyarthi” [seeker of truth]. Millions of children are not in schools, but they are in the fields. In the same way, young girls are thrown to prostitution. They are the children of Ambedkar. In India, there are two issues that are not discussed – 1. Child labour and 2. Human trafficking. This has been all over the world. Though, he talked about these, he never opened his mouth about pedophiles prowling in India and raping the children up to 18 years old. It is well known that most of the pedophiles have been foreigners and that too Christians and priests also. Note the Christian orphanages have been supplying girls and boys to them, as revealed in thousands of cases reported and unreported. And “Sathyarthi” [seeker of truth] never talks about all these issues, though, children are involved. Had he raised these issues, perhaps, he would not have recommended, nominated for and got Nobel Prize.

Ideological racism, linguistic fascism and negationism among the Indian politicians – Baahubali becomes touching stone overcoming caste interpretation also!

April 21, 2017

Ideological racism, linguistic fascism and negationism among the Indian politicians  – Baahubali becomes touching stone overcoming caste interpretation also!

Kannada activists against Sathyaraj

Business motive attributed to the controversy: Praveen Shetty, the president of the KRV, was quoted in The News Minute[1] as saying “Why are directors [sic] pleading with the film chamber and senior actors in Karnataka? He had called us dogs during the Cauvery issue. We want a public apology from Sathyaraj, only then will the film be allowed to release in Karnataka.”[2] A few months ago, Baahubali 2 became the hottest film in the Karnataka trade, and many tried to procure it. But the producers of the film could not get the price that they were asking[3]. This led to a lot of jealousy and rivalry in the local trade, which may have led to raking up a 10-year old issue, which nobody imagined. Whether, the opposition has linguistic chauvinism, financial intricacies and business rivalry or otherwise, the hidden truth cannot be brushed aside. Now the film is going to be directly marketed in Karnataka by Arka Media, the producers, via NM Entertainment Sudhir. Meanwhile hectic parleys are going on to sort out the issue over the ban, which has snowballed into a political row[4].

Kattappa kiiled Baahubali

The actor Sathyaraj and his political role: There has been a lot of furore over the release of “Baahubali: The Conclusion” in Karnataka (scheduled for April 28, 2017), based on certain statements made by Tamil actor Sathyaraj during the Cauvery water crisis[5]. Sathyaraj plays Kattappa, a pivotal character, in the two-part film[6]. Producer Prasad Devineni from Arka Media Works tells us, “We plan on coming to Bengaluru soon to interact with fans and thank them for the support. We also want to appeal to the protesting organizations to support us when we are in the city.” The involvement of actors in the social and political issues has turned into a new twist in this way, affecting the release of a film. Perhaps, the cine-world has to learn that their members should restrict their polemics within the studios and sets and they cannot go beyond such limits enter into other areas to give discourses. There have been actors, who want to become politicians have been playing sage diplomatically avoiding controversies, but, Sathyaraj has been of different kind. Baahubali might have made him national or even international actor known to many, but, once his background is known, the business partners may not be comfortable with his extreme views and ideology.

Satyuaraj speech - Kannadigas opposed

Sathyaraj, Nagaraj and Baaahubali: Director S S Rajamouli sought to distance himself and his Baahubali 2 team from comments allegedly made by actor Sathyaraj that have led to a protest against the film’s release in Karnataka[7]. Rajamouli said the filmmakers were in no way related to the remarks made by Sathyaraj. “The producer and I want to clarify on the issue… The comments must have pained some of you but we don’t have any relation to it. Those were (his) personal comments and were made some nine years ago,” the director said in a video message on his official Twitter page. The controversy broke out after a video in which Sathyaraj allegedly made “derogatory” comments against Kannada activists went viral[8]. What Sathyaraj spoke might be nine years ago, but, Nagaraj has made it current by responding point by point. However, his speech has no takers, as every one, who knows about Sathyaraja, knows very well, he has been a staunch Periyarist, atheist, pro-Tamil separatist and anti-Hindu ideologist. In fact, in his movies, he has always exhibited such ideologies from Vedam puthithu to others. In ine movie, he shoots an astrologer dead asking a question, “Tell me how long you will you live”, when replies that he would live more, he finishes him off, i.e, just to prove that astrology is bogus. He has even donned the role of EVR in “Periyar”. Very often, he used to speak in atheist forums against Hindus, Hindu religion and belief system. As for as Nagaraj is concerned, Tamil people knew nothing, but, only through Sathyaraj, as he himself talked about Katal Nagaraj.

Kattappa brings controversy - Baahubali

Rajamouli’s appeal to the opposing groups: In a statement, filmmaker SS Rajamouli had expressed his gratitude to the Kannada audience and said[9], “It’s known that actor Sathyaraj is playing a significant role in the film. It has come to my attention that a few of his earlier comments had hurt a large section of you. I feel it’s my responsibility to clarify the issue. Baahubali has no connection to Sathyaraj’s remarks. He has only acted in a role in the film. He took his remuneration for it. Sathyaraj’s comments are his personal opinion. Our view is that his personal opinion shouldn’t trouble the film that he acted in. Yet, as responsible people, we have spoken about the situation with Sathyaraj over the phone. We don’t have more power than this. Sathyaraj had made those remarks nine years ago. After that, several films of his have released. The films he acted and produced have been released in Karnataka. Baahubali: The Beginning had also released. We request you to receive Baahubali: The Conclusion as well as the earlier films. If Baahubali: The Conclusion is stopped, Sathyaraj won’t suffer any loss. The problem is for the technicians and producers who have worked hard for five years on the film and for Kannada distributors and movie audiences. I urge you to not show anger against Sathyaraj on Baahubali.”

Dr Sathyaraj - donning EVR atheist

The peculiar Tamilnadu politics with codified and well-scripted agenda: As for as Tamilnadu is concerned, the people connected with cine-field have been successful in becoming politicians, powerful politicians, chief ministers and Central ministers also. In turn, such political ascendancy has also helped their business prospective and hence, cinema and politics have become inseparable for the Dravidian ideologists. The strategy has to be inclusive Dravidian ideology, Tamil separatism, anti-north, anti-Hindi, anti-Sanskrit, anti-Brahmin principles incorporated wherever possible, even if not possible, they have to be included without fail. EVR, Anna, Karunanidhi, MGR, Jayalalita and others have risen to top only because of their political and cinema connections. Of course, the Karunanidhi family and now AIADMK feuds expose the lack of strong leadership and dilution of “dravidian ideology”. This has made others tempting join politics, but, Sivaji Ganesan, SSR, T. Rajendran have suffered a lot. Rajnikanth has been cautious without taking any final decision. Kamal Hassan has now showing his political intention, but, only exhibited through twitter postings. However, individual powerful leaders of whatever nature, their exclusiveness has proved the dangerous decline after their death.

Sc groups wanted to ban Baahubali in 2015

Caste interpretation appearing in 2017: The casteist interpretation has been given to Baahubali by some columnists[10]. The Quint has interpreted in a characteristic way, “SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster ‘Bahubali: The Beginning’ has won the national award for best flm. Congratulations to the team….Here’s a quick peep into our archives – an argument that the movie actually shows how to keep dalits, adivasis and women suppressed…… Remember Agent Orange and Napalm in the Vietnam war? Well, Baahubali has its own version of burning people alive, as long as they are dark adivasis… obviously named KALAkeyas. Katappa, a great soldier and leader even eats separately from his ‘masters’. Why? Because hum choti jaat ke hain.” Thus goes the comments[11]. Thus, in one stroke, it accused “Baahubali” for depicting all war crimes, social exploitation and nuclear to chemical weapon usage against the tribals and others for the survival of higher castes. Perhaps, none noticed such allegory, euphemism or joke!

Pagadaikku piranthavan - opposed by SCs in Tamilnadu 2015

Baahubali faced casteist wrath, but, susidised in JUly 2015 in Tamilnadu[12]: In July 2017, a movie theatre in Madurai playing the hugely popular South Indian hit Baahubali was attacked with petrol bombs by a Dalit group for featuring a line (Pagadaikku Pirandhavan) considered derogatory against a sub-caste of the Dalit community. Subsequently, writer Madan Karky apologised for any hurt caused. Baahubali may be in the news for featuring an anti-Dalit line in the climax, but Dalit activists, filmmakers and scholars point out caste-based slurs have always been a part of Tamil Cinema. “Caste-based slurs such as Chandala, which denotes a sub-caste of a Scheduled Caste community in Tamil Nadu, have been so casually used in comedy-sequences by Tamil comedians like Vadivelu and Vivek. In Ameer’s Paruthiveeran, a super hit song Yele Yelelo, the hero actually calls his girl friend Sandali – which means that she is a daughter of a prostitute. We live in a society where such songs are celebrated,” says Punitha Pandian, editor of Dalit Murasu, a magazine that writes critically about social issues. Pandian remarked that often ignorance is given as an excuse and urged the civil society – intellectuals, activists and media – to do more to sensitise the masses. “This is not a problem of Dalits alone. We have been constantly talking and writing about these things but we have reached a stage where only a petrol bomb can force the society to talk about it. Filmmakers must be sensitised about social issues,” he says. What does the film industry make of the accusation that caste-based slurs have always been a part of Tamil films? Film-maker S.P. Jhananathan says that most young and budding writers are seldom aware of social issues, and suggests that the writers’ union must be actively involved in raising consciousness. “Most film-makers and writers are not aware of social issues. Film-makers and writers are also cut from the same fabric of society; how can they be any different,” he asks. Asked if there is a tendency to smuggle in the idea of caste pride into the narrative to appeal to politically dominant communities, Jhananathan says it is very much possible. “If the film directly deals with the issue of caste rivalry between dominant castes and Dalits, one need not shy away from talking about caste. But I would urge film-makers to be open about it. The problem is when caste pride is inserted in a film which has nothing to do with it,” he says.  The interpretation continued[13].

[13] Subagunarajan, Editor of the Tamil film journal Kaatchi Pizhai, says the fundamental problem lies in the way such casteist slurs have been embedded in the Tamil language. “Words such as chandala and kepmari, both of which denote the name of a caste, have been used as swear words. This is why Periyar called Tamil a barbaric language,” he says. However, Subagunarajan fears that society may be heading to a stage where film-makers and writers cannot discuss caste issues at all. “The courts must be proactive and not admit such cases unless it is very pressing. If the film uses a casteist slur to underscore oppression, then it is not an issue. It becomes an issue when it is used to elicit laughs,” he says hoping that the film industry will take measures to correct itself. D. Ravi Kumar, general secretary of Viduthalai Ciruthaigal Katchi, says that while the issue needs to be debated in society, he disagrees with the form of protest. “The swear words have a connection to the specific social history of oppressed people. In a democratic society, we cannot continue to use it and we need to debate it. However, the form of protest is unacceptable. Democratic issues cannot be communicated in an undemocratic way,” he says.

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties!

Hate speech, Indian media and secular parties!

Vedaprakash

The applicability of expression “hate-speech” to India: Now “hate-speech” is discussed a lot in the media. The applicability of such expression to Indian context has to be considered in a careful way, as the Indians have got independence only just 66 years ago, in spite of the history going beyond 5000 years. In other words, the Indians were ruled by the Colonial forces and the Mohammedan powers that treated Indians subdued in many aspects. Both powers disparaged, denigrated and maligned them in many ways through their appreciation and depreciation. The conditions set out for “hate speech” in the present context were already found in their attitude, behavior and actions against them. Just like “gay rights” etc., when new issues are brought in, Indians have to deal them cautiously.

Indians derided by the rulers of the past 1300 years: Even after the freedom, as the legacy of the past rulers has been continued with the enforced factors, and after the LPG regime again the neocolonial forces dominate and control the thought processes of Indians with new parameters of modernization, westernization, industrialization and now Americanization. The slangs of different influential foreign masters exhibited in various spheres. Thus, the media has such characteristic mores. Above all, the Indians have been under the constant attack of both these forces and the ideologically opposed communists also. Though, the Communists of all sorts are opposed by many political parties, ideologically, they have been dominating in the Indian media, curriculum and polity.

“Hate-speech”, now invented and its understanding: “Hate speech is generally understood as, that speech is[1]  “ … usually thought to include communications of animosity or disparagement of an individual or a group on account of a group characteristic such as race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or sexual orientation” and it is carried to be quoted by others[2] as authority[3]. The westernized or non-Indian way of expressing journalists have started using this expression without going into the details. Now, we find all Indian English media uses such expression, as if the Indian speakers, particularly, politicians have been violating all provisions of Acts and rules but scot-free.

From Indian English media to Indian polity: Incidentally, the same Indian English media has introduced many words and expressions of hate speech – lumpen elements[4], bandwagon, goons[5], thugs, fringe, medieval forces, secular, communal, fascist, middle class, fundamentalist, saffron terror[6], rightwing terror[7], and so on. They have been used as adjectives with one or each other with other or words taken from this list. Thus, we can see –

  • Fascist communal forces
  • middle class mentality
  • communal forces
  • communal goons
  • rightwing thugs
  • medieval bandwagon
  • lumpen fringe elements
  • saffron terror elements
  • rightwing terrorists

and such other combinations have been so popular in usage. Specifically, these expressions have been mostly used against BJP, RSS and other so-called Sangh Parivar organizations by the media experts and standardized such usage, as if they are applicable to them only. Even their counterparts say leftwing, Green terror, real medieval forces, fascist fringe bandwagons and others have never been branded.

Secular and communal “hate-speeches”: As the media and the non-BJP parties including the Muslim, Islamic and other categories always call the BJP and Sangh Parivar as communal. Emboldened by such persistent, relentless and pushy propaganda, they started using other attacking expressions. BJP is anti-minority, anti-Muslim, anti-Islamic etc, whereas all other non-BJP parties are pro-minority, pro-Muslim and Islam supporting categories. The government media, functions, iftar parties are also used to carry on such propaganda. Thus, this has created some sort of inferiority complex in the minds of Sangh Parivar, their leaders, members and sympathizers and Hindus as a whole of India.

Sonia started “hate-speech” in electioneering: The “hate-speech” campaign started with Sonia during 2007 elections, when she called Modi “Maut ka sauthagar”. Generally, she reads prepared speech by somebody, that means, she consciously accepted and used such expression to target Modi. Here the role of scrpt writer is also questioned[8]. On 28 January 2014 Aam Aadmi party leader Arvind Kejriwal tweeted scathing comment over Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi calling them moron and murderer. He tweeted, “Stuck between a moron and a murderer…what now India”. Sonia has called BJP communal many times, Modi “Maut ka sauthagar” (messager of Death) etc., followed by the rhetoric of Digvijaya and Kapil Sibal many times in their interviews.  Sonia before Gujarat assembly elections referred Narendra Modi to “Maut Ka Saudagar” (person who sells death) and on 1st Feb 2014 accusing BJP to spread hate among people she said, “I firmly believe you will not allow those who sow the seeds of poison (Zaher Ki Kheti) to succeed. They sport Muslim skull cap, move with maulanas, yet they claim themselves 100% hallmark of secular category. However, when Modi started speaking in Hindi in a colloquial way addressing the common man with sarcasm, his words are watched, recorded and interpreted as “hate speech”. Nahid Hasan the SP candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana constituency hinted at Mayawati’s proximity to Modi. “Thrice Mayawati has sat in Modi’s lap and after elections she will do so again. Both are unmarried,” he added[9]. For Musaffarnagar riots all parties have been blamed by the media[10], but the Supreme Court[11] the ruling party SP for not preventing and controlling the riots[12].

For convenience, the famous ones are listed as follows[13]:

  1. Zeher Ki Kheti– This comment made by Sonia Gandhi is the latest in the line (and perhaps one of most pinching ones). Speaking at a public rally in northern Kanataka, the UPA chairperson accused Narendra Modi of indulging in “Zeher Ki Kheti” (Sowing seeds of poison).

  1. Maut Ka Saudagar-Sonia‘s remark, wherein she referred to Modi as “Maut Ka Saudagar” (merchant of death) in the Gujarat assembly elections in 2007.

  1. Modi’s “Khooni Panja” and “Zaalim Hath” Attack-Modi has never been the kind of person who would meekly listen to outrageous comments from opposition and remain quite. He has perhaps been even more famous for his reference to the Congress party’s ‘palm’ symbol as “Khooni Panja” (Bloody Claws) and “Zaalim Hath” (Cruel Hand).

  1. Modi’s “Shazada” and “Madam” Barb– Modi is also known for referring to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi as “Shazada” (prince) and “Madam” respectively.

  1.  Somnath Bharti’s “Want to Spit on Faces” Attack-he expressed his desire to “spit on the faces” of Arun jaitley and Harish Salve.

  1. Kejriwal Retweets “Stuck Between Moron and Murderer”- “Stuck between a moron and a murderer… what now, India!?”

  1. Manhonah Singh’s “Presiding over Massacre” Statement  – He referred to BJP’s PM Candidate Modi as someone who “presided over massacre of citizens” during the Gujurat riots of 2002.

  1. Rahul Gandhi’s “Comb to a Bald Man” Quip– Rahul has not been too far away in the rank of people making most controversial remarks as well. But this one was really quite funny.

Why against BJP or “Hindus”?: The expressions Communal BJP and secular Congress have been so popularized that even the BJPwalas are quite amused to be called so. And the non-BJP parties have always taken such privilege of calling BJP communal and thus they always pose as secular. Of course, the persistent media also always brand the parties and certified. Only few like Advani have understood the mischief and countered them by using expression “pseudo-secularism”. The provisions of IPC and Peoples Representation Act could penalize the “hate-sppech”, but many times the speakers have scot-free for example, Arunthathi Roy, Jilani in the north and the DK and atheist elements of the South, though dozens of cases filed have been pending against them. Incidentally, it has to be noted that these speakers have targeted “Hindus” only.

[8] Lyricist and script writer Javed Akhtar has won many laurels for his dialogue writing skills, but this is one instance, he says, where he can’t take the credit. The political grapevine attributes the maut ka saudagar reference Sonia Gandhi made during her Gujarat poll campaign to him. “I am truly embarrassed for being given credit for somebody else’s work,” says Akhtar. Ever since Sonia Gandhi used the term during one of her election speeches in Gujarat, there has been speculation in political circles about who actually coined the term. Several names have been doing the rounds, the most prominent being Akhtar.
