DMK, Dravida and Black Parivar have been anti-Hindu or not? “Mount Road Mahavishnu,” marital alliance with Iyengars, tirade against Rama and Ramayana [2]

June 2018, SriRangam temple, Stalin, priest apply paste

2018 – drama of visiting Srirangam for Durga: Again in June 21-22, 2018, he visited Srirangam in connection with party functions, as arranged by the DMK cadres. He visited the house of IUML leader, K. M. Khader Mohideen, to enquire about his ailing wife Hajiyani Lathiba Begum. Then he visited Padmasali Mantap to attend some function. On his way, at the Srirangam temple, he was welcomed by Sundar Bhattar and others, opposite to Ranga Gopuram. Ironically, he was given a silk shawl and one priest affectionately put the holy paste on his forehead, but, lo, this man wiped out it with the same shawl! This shocked not only the innocent priests, as could noted from the photographs, but also by other onlookers. They welcomed with “Purnakumbam,” and honored through an elephant garlanding him.  On behalf of Ahobila mutt also, he was honoured[1]. When they asked to come inside the temple, he flatly refused[2] with usual facial expression frowning. To clear all doubts, “Nakkeeran,” the pro-DK-DMK magazined recorded that just to satisfy the wish of Durga, his wife only, he did all these antics[3]. Only K. N. Nehru’s wife used to accompany, this time either she joined him or he took her. In any case, the DMK cadres told, he came just to satisfy and fulfill her wishes[4]. In any case, it is clear that he conducted such dramas to fool others, particularly, the gullible Hindus.

Karunanidhi declared, “Hindu is a thief” in October 2002, case filed[5]: The Chennai city police had registered the first information report against the former Chief Minister and DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, for his speech at an October 24 2002 minorities’ meeting here, which, a complainant said, wounded the religious feelings of Hindus. The police acted on the complaint filed by, R. Premnath, an advocate of Chepauk, before XIV metropolitan magistrate[6]. The court forwarded the complaint to the Egmore police station. Accordingly, the police registered a case for offences under Section 295-A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 298 IPC (Uttering words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and taken up a probe.  The complainant said at the meeting held at St.Andrew Church, Egmore, to protest the legislation preventing forcible conversions, the former Chief Minister spoke with the “deliberate intention to outrage the feelings of Hindus, to get applause and support from the gathering to undermine and wantonly insult the Hindus”. Karunanidhi had said, “Who is a Hindu? A good man would say the word `Hindu’ means a thief”. The word used by him showed “his deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of Hindus”. He did not tender any apology. The complainant said the DMK chief  “identified himself as a rationalist, but changes his colours at public meetings to satisfy the gathering”. The Police Commissioner ought to have taken suo motu action against Karunanidhi for insulting the Hindu religion and feelings of Hindus. But neither the police nor the Government took action,  Premnath said.

Karu, Rama, bow and arrow

Is this Ram a civil engineer? When Karunanidhi called Ramayana “fiction” (2007): In 2007, he famously came down hard on ‘communal forces’ for using the ‘myth’ of Ram Sethu to stall the Sethusamudram project and had famously said[7]: “Who is this Raman (as Lord Ram is referred to in Tamil)? In which engineering college did he study and become a civil engineer? When did he build this so-called bridge? Is there any evidence for this?” On the withdrawal of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project – to create a shipping route in the shallow straits between India and Sri Lanka, he had said: “The withdrawal of the affidavits does not mean that the project is being withdrawn,” Karunanidhi told reporters at Yercaud near Salem. “If it amounts to the project itself being shelved, then the DMK, which adheres to scientific, rational and progressive ideals, will not accept it.” He went on to call Ramayana a piece of fiction that represented the conflict between Aryans and Dravidians. This had led BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad to retort: “We would like to know from Karunanidhi if he would make a similar statement against religious head of any other religion; chance are he may not.”He even went on to claim Ram was a drunkard and he was quoting Valmiki’s Ramayana. Pointing out that the Constitution didn’t bar his remarks, he had said[8]: “I have not hurt anyone by my remarks. Expressing the views which are already in writing cannot be termed as wounding the sentiments of somebody else. The DMK has never done anything which would hurt the sentiments of either the Hindus or anybody else and the party would not do so in the future.”

TTD met Kru for Ramanujar Jan.2016

Karunanidhi playing Ravana (1998): On October 1, 1998, Anoor Jagadeesan, president of PDK and 16 others were arrested when they tried to burn the effigies of Rama and Lakshmana in Chennai[9]. On October 18, 1998, Karunanidhi asserted that, “….if you insult Ravana, you are insulting me”. Quoting from Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India, the septuagenarian politician pointed out that the epic is all about the Aryan-Dravidian struggle for supremacy[10]. Karunanidhi’s speech was a throwback to some of his earlier film scripts when he brought this struggle to the fore through subtle messages that bypassed the scrutiny of censors. In Ramasethu issue also, he passed remarks asking “In which engineering college Rama studied” (so that he could build a bridge). Even, Kamal Hasan also used to utter that he came from Ravan genealogy or something like that!

ISKCON with Karu

EVR, Anna and Karunanidhi followed the same pattern (1956-1970): In 1956 August first, Dravidia Kazhagam asked the volunteers to bum pictures of Lord Rama as the organization considered Ramayana as anti-women and anti lower castes etc. one Dravidia Kazhagam leader in the name of Thiruvarur Thangarajan wrote a new version of Ramayana way Rama was portrayed as a villain. The Dravidia Kazhagam film star M.R. Radha staged the play throughout the state. The Government led by the Chief Minister Kamaraj immediately banned the play but Dravidia Kazhagam after obtaining court’s pem1ission staged the play in selected towns.  At the instigation of Thiru E. V. Ramaswami Naicker[11], the Leader of Dravida Kazhagam, several tableaus depicting the picture of Gods Rama and Muruga were being beaten by a chappal in a procession held at Salem on 23rd and 24th January 1971. When one individual printed the photos of the procession, the DMK government banned and seized the posters.  The Government of Tamil Nadu issued a Notification G. O. Ms. No. 491 Home dated 12-2-1971 directing the posters to be forfeited to the Government on the ground that the said posters contained matters which promote or intend to promote the feelings of enmity and hatred between different classes of citizens of India or which is deliberately or maliciously intended to outrage the religious feelings of any such class by insulting the religion or the religious feelings of that class[12].

Karu-yoga

Mount Road Mahavishnu, Karunanidhi and Iyengar girls marrying his nephews: It is well known that Karunanidhi used to be so harsh and rude about “The Hindu” dubbing it as a “Parppanan naledu”, i.e, a daily of Brahmins (using derogatory word). However, N. P. Ramajeyam started gaining control over the Hindu labour union.  He joined in 1965 and became Union’s General Secretary in 1975. He was also a MLA of Mylapore constituency during 1996-2001. When he died in 2007, N. Murali, MD praised him like anything and told, “that he never brought politics inside”! However, when Kanimozhi was suffering fron depression, because of divorce, she was accommodated in the “editorial section” and trained to get over. Ironically, Dayanidhi Maran took their relative Priya as his wife. He married Priya of “The Hindu” Iyengar family [Ramesh Rangarajan son of S. Rangarajan] on 26-08-1994. Incidentally, Mallika wife of Murasoli Maran has been the daughter of A. N. Kalanasundara Iyer. And Stalin’s name was mentioned in posters, in those days as “Vishnu Stalin”!  Then the atheit and anti-Hindu Karunanidhi stopped mentioning “Mount Road Mahavishnu”. However, his tirade against Ram unabated as pointed out above. Thus, father and son have been trying to exploit the sentiments of Iyengars with marital links.

DMK, Dravida and Black Parivar have been anti-Hindu or not? “Mount Road Mahavishnu,” marital alliance with Iyengars, tirade against Rama and Ramayana [1]

Stalin response to The Hindu 23-09-2018

Why DMK took difference stand in the General Council?: The Dravidian parties, particularly, the Dravidar Kazhagam and Drvida Munnetrak Kazhagam with all their splinter groups operating under different banners have been consistently, atheist, that too, anti-Hindu since inception. With the presence of BJP felt now, they have been jittery and tried to change their stand. In deed, the DMK was in NDA, in spite of their anti-Hindi, anti-north, anti-Aryan, anti-Hindu and so on. Now, also, the possibility of Dravidian parties aligning with BJP for the 2019 elections, as is openly discussed in the media, DMK tries to clarify its position. Under the circumstances, in “The Hindu,” the report / news appeared has been interesting and intriguing also, as it has not appeared in other newspapers[1]. “The Hindu” Reporter reportedly asked, “You have taken a stand on God in the party’s general council for the first time. Was it because you feel that it is difficult to run a campaign against God and religion especially after the BJP’s growth or are you seeking to put an end to the criticism that the DMK is anti-Hindu?”.  For this Stalin responded as follows[2]:

Cases on anti-hindu karu

Stalins’s detailed reply to the question as to DMK has been anti-Hindu: Stalin responded, “I would like to give a detailed reply. Anna proclaimed that there was “one God and one race”. He also said, “I would not break Pillaiyar, neither will I break coconut for him.” Kalaignarhas reiterated this point many times. But a section deliberately suppresses these facts and seeks to portray us as atheist and anti-Hindu. When Anna talked about God, he took a cue from Bharathiyar’s lines, “Oh ignorant! You are in search for a thousand Gods.” Kalaignar always had a non-partisan approach. He never imposed his ideas and beliefs on others. He was not against faith in God or in religion. Why should he desilt the Kapaleeswarar temple tank if he was against the faith? Would he have come forward to repair a portion of the Tiruvannamalai temple when it collapsed? Would he have taken efforts to run the Tiruvarar temple car in 1969 which remained idle for 20 years and allowed Mannai Narayanansamy, who was a minister in his cabinet, to participate in it?

Atheists exploiting Krishna etc

Karunanidhi’s stand on Hindu religion and Hindus: Stalin’s detailed reply continued, “Just listen to what Kalaignar had said about the Hindus: “If everyone followed the tenets of Hinduism, as preached by Vivekananda, nothing could be greater than it. I am not against it. Since Muslims and Christians are minorities we have to support them to instill confidence among them. At the same time it is wrong not to support the Hindus because they are a majority.” When I spoke about God, I kept in mind the ideas of Anna and Kalaignar. The DMK has never preached against the God and religion as you assume. Those who could not directly face the socio, economic and political ideas of the DMK indulge in a mischievous campaign that the party is against God and Hindus. Kalaignar has always respected faiths and beliefs of people of all religions. DMK has campaigned against those who propagate communalism and fundamentalism with a view to destroying pluralism and communal harmony and seek to divide the nation. It will do it in the future also.I can only laugh at your suggestion that the BJP has grown. You ask neutral people to find out whether it is growing or declining”. However, this has not been the first time to respond in this fashion, as almost, he responded in the same manner, in 2015 also.

Stalin response to The Hindu 23-09-2018.my reply appearing

Responses to “The Hindu” as appearing in the “online”: I responded as follows  under that report, “As I have been listening to them since 1960s, I know Stalin is telling lies. That EVR broke Vinayaka idols is well-known to all, therefore, what Anna said is immaterial. Karunanidhi drank gruel and ate cake, but not any prasad, but, abused Hindu God. Had they really understood Vivekananda, then Karunanidhi would not have attempted to evict “Vivekanda House” from Ice-house. EVR, Anna and Karunanidhi never questioned Mohammedan and Christian scriptures and Gods, as they did against Hindu. Even in atheism, they could not follow secular atheism and that only exposes their duplicity” and in Tamil also. The other replies appearing clearly prove that the readers have not believed the story, as all know the true colours of Stalin and DMK.

Stalin response to The Hindu 17-10-2015

Same reply came from Stalin in 2015 also and “The Hindu” published[3]: Refuting the allegations that the DMK was anti-Hindu, party treasurer M.K. Stalin said 90 per cent of the party cadres were Hindus and their family members had faith in religion and god[4].  “There is a well-planned campaign to project that the DMK is anti-Hindu. But the family members of party leaders and cadre have faith in god. Even my wife is visiting all temples across the State and I never once asked her not to go. We do not stand in the way of those who have faith,” he told  The Hindu . Stalin, who had a meeting with a team of temple priests in Kumbakonam, said he visited Thirukoshtiyur temple in the first phase of his tour because it was there Saint Ramanuja, ignoring the warning of his teacher, climbed the temple tower and spoke aloud so that everyone could know what he had been taught.

Stalin visited temple- 2015-Tirukostiyur-2

The claim of followers of Thirumoolar: “We, the followers of Anna, have faith in Thirumoolar’s dictum  Ontrey Kulam Oruvaney Devan  (There is one community and one God). Our leader Kalaignar wrote dialogues for the tele-serial Ramanuja, because it was he who had paved way for entry of all communities, including Dalits, into the temples,” he said.  Rejecting the allegation that he was visiting temples and meeting priests in view of the coming election, the DMK leader said that he respected the sentiments of all sections of people and even in the past had visited temples and accepted the  poorna kumbam .  “I began Namakku Naamey in Kanyakumari and there I called on leaders of all religions. I have visited mosques and I have been invited to visit the church at Velankanni. Our leader is always given warm reception at Saidapet temple during election campaigns,” he said.  Asked about the feedback to his tour, he said people in the State were looking for a change and the DMK was the only alternative.

Stalin visited temple- 2015-Tirukostiyur

The 2015-drama of meeting “Bhattars, Archakas” etc: Actually, for “Namakku Namee” program, he was campaigning im Thajavur areas in September 2015 with his party cadres. He suddenly entered Sowmya Narayana temple at Thirukostiyur. His party cadres were reportedly taken aback, as it was not of the program[5]. However, the priests there welcomed with “Purnakumbam,” the traditional way of welcoming VIPs[6]. After going through the temple, he also had a “darshan” of the 106 feet high Gopura from which Sri Ramauja preached[7]. Perhaps, he tried to repeat “Ramanuja” to fool others. Because of the “Ramanuja” teleserial, some Vaishnavites started praising Karunanidhi. But, later, they came to know his hatred against Vaishnavism, as he blasphemed Rama, Ramayana etc. He also supported the goups that burned Rama pictures and conducted “Ravana Leela”! Thus, it is evident that he had gone there as an enthusiast rather than a devotee. Then he had meetings at Tiruvarur and other districts. He also met Bhattars, Archakas  etc., in Kamatchi Amman Kalyana mantap[8].  He also met the Bishop and other Christian representatives. Therefore, it is typical “secular drama” played by the anti-Hindu Stain nothing else.

Stalin visited temple- 2015-Tirukostiyur-3

Stalin wanted to know about “Thirukulathar” etc – PTI news 2015[9]: M K Stalin, DMK Treasurer, paid a surprise visit to an ancient Vaishnavite temple here during his ongoing state-wide tour to connect with people ahead of next year’s assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Stalin, accompanied by his wife Durga, was welcomed with “poornakumbha mariyathai” (temple honours) by priests and officials at the entrance of the famous Sri Sowmya Narayanaswamy temple here in Sivaganga District. It was from the top of this temple tower that the 11th century revolutionary Vaishnavite saint Sri Ramanuja delivered the sacred “Ashtakshara” mantra – “Ohm Namo Narayanaya” – to the entire people of the village, defying his guru’s direction not to reveal it to anyone.Incidentally, Stalin’s father and DMK chief M Karunanidhi has written the script for a serial on Sri Ramanuja which is being telecast on ‘Kalaignar TV’ Stalin was taken to the tower from which Saint Ramanuja preached the important mantra to all the people so that they could get the blessings of Lord Narayana. This was the first time that a top level leader of DMK openly visited the temple, its officials said. Temple’s traditional priest for reciting Tamil hymns Tirukoshtiyur Madhavan told PTI that Stalin sought to know about Saint Ramanuja’s visit to the temple and the saint’s gesture in revealing the mantra and its meaning to all people irrespective of caste[10]. The priest also said Stalin visited the shrines of Sri Ramanuja and his guru (Thirukoshtiyur Nambi). Stalin asked “whether is it not Saint Ramanuja who named the Dalits as “Thirukulathaar” (son’s of Goddess Lakshmi), thousand years before Gandhi called them “Harijan“(People of Lord Vishnu)“. The DMK Treasurer, considered political heir apparent to Karunanidhi, has been meeting various sections of people and hearing their grievances in his campaign which he launched on September 20, 2015 to cover all 234 assembly constituencies in the state.

Vairamuthu’s research on Andal, the “quoted quote research methodology,” and the confession of “eminent historians”!

January 20, 2018

Vairamuthu’s research on Andal, the “quoted quote research methodology,” and the confession of “eminent historians”!

Andal, Vairamuthu controversy

The controversy started with Vairamuthu on Andal (07-1-2018): What Vairamuthu wrote about Andal as appeared in “Dinamani” in Tamil, and its translation is given as follows[1]: “As Andal was not born to Periyazhwar, there were no details available about her birth, though, she was brought up by a Brahmin, as the society that was controlled with caste stratification might not accept her into such caste hierarchy, Andal herself had already attained the freedom of word with force and there was a practice of offering women to temple accepted by the then society, some researchers have been compelled to arrive at stunning conclusions. The book ‘Indian Movement: some aspects of dissent, protest and reform’ edited by Subash Chandra Malik of Indiana University, USA contains such reference as follows: Andal was herself a devadasi who lived and died in the Srirangam Temple. The devotees might not accept this, but, those who oppose patriarchy and socio-religious (code) might think about it.” This created the controversy that is still raging in Tamilnadu and some parts of Andhra and Karnataka. Ironically, now, Dinamani has removed the controversial or rather blasphemous article and their regrets are appearing there[2].

Vairamuthu, Vaidhyanathan, dinamani

Verification of the book referred to by Vairamuthu: Now, let us analyze the “quote” of the learned poet and writer of Vairamuthu. As he has given the reference, now, as a “researcher”, anyone can go to the source and verify.

India movements, S C Malik edited book

Thus, let us see the book under reference. M. G. S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan published a paper, “The Bhakti Movement in South India” in “Indian Movements: Some Aspects of Dissent Protest and Reform,” edited and introduced by S. C. Malik and published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 1978. In which, what they claimed was,

Cheraman Perumal Nayanar notes the reception given to Shiva by devadasis of all ages while he went out in procession around the streets in Kailas35, and Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple36.

Quotations of MGS

The two footnotes given for support for those two lines are as follows:

  1. Ceraman Perumal Nayanar, Adiyula, M. Raghava Aiyangar, ed. Caruventar Ceyyukovai, 1951, Trivandrum, Vol.II, pp.136-64.
  1. T. A. Gopinatha Rao, The History of Sri Vaishnavas, Madras, 1923, Madras, p. 5.

MGS, Kesavan , tthe book

So when we look at page no.5 of the said book, what, T. A. Gopinatha Rao recorded is this, “When she reached marriageable age, she refused to marry anyone except the God Ranganatha of the Srirangam temple. The God appeared to the Alvar in a dream to declare before him his acceptance of the girl in marriage and ordered her to be brought to his residence at Srirangam. Periyalvar took her there with great eclat and left her in her Lord’s house and returned to his quiet residence at Srivilliputtur.

Quotations of MGS- TAG Rao reference

Therefore, there is nothing like what the learned historians M. G. S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan reportedly claimed, “Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple.” Why then, the leaned “historians” wrote in that way and what was their motive?

Quotations of MGS- TAGopinatha Rao reference,p.5

M. G. S. Narayanan clarified to Dinathanthi that there was no such reference to Devadasi[3]: When Asoka Vardhini contacted M. G. S. Narayanan through phone, he accepted that there was no specific reference to Andal as devadasi and he mentioned it based on inference only. He also accepted that Veluthat Kesavan was a student of him, doing M.A history (implying that he might not have been having research expertise at that time). There is no inscriptional evidence to that effect and it was written only based on “oral tradition.” When she asked specifically, he specifically confessed that there is no primary evidence and even secondary evidence to that effect, it was a controversial interpretation and a “matter of inference”. Then, naturally, it is intriguing and shocking to know as to know how they could have written conclusively, “Andal was herself a devadasi who lived and died in the Srirangam Temple.” Now, he is considered as one of reputed and eminent historians of India, former chairman of ICHR and so on. Why them, they stooped to such “quoted quote” research methodology, amounting faking and forging such lies and falsehood in historiography?

Vairamuthu regrets for Andal comments

The implications of “quoted quote research,” bogey of “eminent historians” and other modern-day mythistories: Now let us analyze their quotations, reportedly lifted from two books mentioned above.

  1. The book in question was published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 1978 and not by Indiana University, USA as claimed by Vairamuthu.
  1. Vairamuthu should have verified the sources before quoting, that too, part of a sentence picking up from their paper. He must have consulted the original sources (as he knows Tamil very well) and also other secondary sources after 1978 to present his speech and “researched” article appeared.
  1. Ironically, he and the press, still carry such wrong and falsified blabbering[4]. “As part of my research for writing this article on Aandaal, I happened to read a collection of articles edited by Subhash Chandra Malik in the name of “Indian Movements: Some Aspects of Dissent, Protest and Reform”, the original from Indiana University and published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study in 1978. It is very much an Indian research study by Indian historians,”thus claimed Vairamuthu.[5]
  1. Vairamuthu added, “Professor M.G.S Narayanan & Professor Kesavan Veiuthat. Professor M. G. S Narayanan is considered as “one of India’s top authorities on ancient history” and has served as the chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research. Professor Kesavan Veluthat is the Professor of History in University of Delhi. The line mentioned in my article was from a reputed publication and by reputed historians.” But, M. G. S. Narayanan now refuted. Here, Vairamuthu mentioned, “G.S Narayanan is considered as “one of India’s top authorities on ancient history,” whereas, the subject dealt with has not been so ancient!
  1. Cheraman Perumal Nayanar notes the reception given to Shiva by devadasis of all ages while he went out in procession around the streets in Kailas35.” M. G. S. Narayanan himself accepted that the story of Cheraman Perumal was a myth floated after 13th century by the vested Mohammedan groups. Therefore, the question of devadasis of all sorts going out in procession is redundant, immaterial and incompetent.
  1. Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple36.” This is also fake, fraudulent and deceptive, as T.A. Gopinatha Rao never mentioned such sentence in his book, as pointed out above.
  1. It is unbecoming for these researchers, now, paraded as “historians” to quote that was not there in a book, secondary source.
  1. It exposes the dubious and dangerous nature of “quoted quote” research methodology, as most of the researchers, may not look into the quotes recorded by the “eminent historians.”
  1. Coming to ideology, it is evident that the involved personalities have been Marxists and atheists and thus, their speeches and writings have been tarnished with bias, prejudice and without objectivity.
  1. As the Marxist ideology is coupled with Dravidian ideology of atheism, that is directed against Hindu religion, evidently, Hindus have come to streets. How they have been oppressed, suppressed and attacked by them since 1960s have been too well-known to be repeated here.

However, most of the papers were of generalized, rehashing the already known details and targeting Hindu religion for superstition and so on. Emphasis was given for in between Peiyar and Dravidian movement. The atheist arguments had been against ontological, teleological, cosmological points, but, they could not put forward any new points. The age-old theist-atheist arguments on these lines have been too well-known to be repeated here.

DK opposing Rajini-

Atheism versus Spirituality – debate started: Speakers propagating atheist philosophy slammed religious beliefs, especially in Hinduism, at the World Atheist Conference here on Friday (05-01-2018). The concept of spiritual politics espoused by superstar Rajinikanth also came in for sharp criticism. It is not known as to why Rajni’s politics should be attacked and criticized in the “World Atheist Conference”. Evidently, as Trichy has been strong base of Rajini’s fans and his political ambitions would erode the Dravidian polity and as well as the prospects of DMK, the WAC has been exploited to attack Rajini politics.  Though Rajini’s concept was much debated over the past few days, some speakers found it nascent and lacking clarity. However, Dravida Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani aid that people propagating ideology of spiritual politics would be exposed sooner than later. Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, he said spiritual politics was nothing but a tool that might be used to deceive people. Politics was in no way related to spirituality. Spiritual politics stressed on the existence of spirit which was called ‘Atma’. The aim of the conference was to counter the very existence of spirit through philosophical arguments. Those trying to mislead people in the name of spirit would be exposed soon, he said. Ironically, even the atheist religions like Jainism and Buddhism believed “Atma”, rebirth, etc.

WAC, Trichy, Kanimozhi

During public session, Rajinikantha’s “Spiritual Politics” attacked: Lakshman Tamil from Periyar International, USA said that those thinking about starting a political party in the state could not ignore Periyar or Dravidian movement for their brand value. He said that one could become popular in the state by invoking the name of Periyar. Lakshman recalled how his father had told him to be honest also when he expressed his wish to become an atheist like Thanthai periyar. Periyar had set high standards to be an atheist, he said. aking a jibe at Rajini, Dravidian Tamil Federation general secretary Suba Veerapandian said that a person had recently visited Gopalapuram (the residence of DMK leader M Karunanidhi) to seek his blessings[1]. But little did he know that he could only get rationalist lessons from the leader and not his blessings[2]. Rationalists and atheists had been criticising the actor for giving his political move a religious colour. Though Rajinikanth had come out in the open with a statement clarifying his stand, not many seemed to be convinced.

WAC-3, Times of India

“Dravidian philosophy is the only alternative to Hindutva”: Untouchability is the worst tyranny any part of the world has ever seen. So is the caste system. And these are practiced in the name of God, said Dravida Kazhagam leader K Veeramani here on Friday (05-01-2018). Speaking at the World Atheism Conference 2018 in Trichy, Veeramani said India is land of atheism, not temples. Atheism is not just the denial of religion, but denial of all superstitions associated with it too. He said atheism dated back to 1500 CE in our country. Lakshman Tamil, Periyar International, USA, said caste system is the bane of India and society cannot progress as long as this Vedic system exists. Hinduism cannot claim that it is all-encompassing until it disowns the Vedas, he said. Buddhism and Jainism moved away from people and lost their relevance[3]. The Dravidar Kazhagam has created a populous atheist movement and it is the true Shramana movement of the modern time in terms of the core philosophy of atheism, he said. Terming Periyar’s atheism the most relevant, Lakshman Tamil said it is also a populous movement. Its multifaceted nature has also contributed to its popularity. “Dravidian philosophy is the only alternative to Hindutva. People have to choose between Hindutva, which is a Vedic tradition that is based on hate and segregates people in the name of caste, and Dravidian philosophy, which preaches self-respect,” said Lakshman Tamil[4].

WAC-3, Times of India- attacking Rajini

2G-Raja spoke on his atheism in Tihar and outside: Former Union telecom minister A Raja started off by thanking the CBI and the CAG for making him popular worldwide in the 2G spectrum case. “Being an atheist since teenage, his belief in atheism strengthened further during his imprisonment in the Tihar jail when he saw prisoners, who included rapists and murderers, making a beeline to offer oil to a figure of Saturn (Shani). Hinduism was used as a tool by upper caste people to keep a majority section poor by denying them education. This is a country where people are divided in terms caste. And this notion is created by religion”, he said. As many as 500 papers on atheism are going to be presented in the conference that is going to last for 3 days.

WAC-3, The Hindu, 06-01-2016

The Second Day paper reading session (06-01-2018): The seconday paper reading session was held in Einstein Auditorium, for which K. Veeramani chaired and  Narendra Naik, President, Indian Federation of Rationalist Associations acted as moderator. Devadoss welcomed the speakers and delegates. Elizabeth O’ Cassey delivered a special lecture.

Thaneswar Sahu, Philosopher professor and President of Odhisha Rationalist Association spoke on “Science, Scientific thinking – A Perspective.”

  1. Raja Kennedy, Rationalist Teachers Forum, spoke on, “Encouraging Scientific temper amomg the children”.
  2. Ramasamy, Professor and Rationalist from Madurai, spoke on “Atheist-Humanist Fighters Periyar and Gora”.

Suvinnila, Vice-President, Rationalist Association gave vote of thanks. Here, also, the speakers had repeated the points. They always tried to take “Science” as weapon against religious beliefs and dub them as “Superstition,” but, they could not tackle the issue of “Scientific superstition,” prevalent exploiting the public under forced propaganda, dubious advertisements and aggressive marketing.

WAc,Kanimozhi speaks

Rationalists attacked, women treated badly by all religions- Kanimozhi: The evening seession was held at Puthur Periyar auditorium, Trichy as a public meeting, in which Kanimozhi, Tirumavalavan, C. Vijayan (Director, Vijayawada Rationalist Centre) spoke. Atheist and rationalists all around the world are under threat, said Rajya Sabha MP K Kanimozhi on the second day of the World Atheist Conference, organised by Dravidar Kazhagam in Trichy on Saturday (06-01-2018)[5]. She hoped the believers or religious minded attending the conference see the “………….true light of Periyar. The people who have congregated here are already atheist. Even then why we have gathered? Why do we have to preach ourselves when we have already converted? But we have to come together to show that we are together and what humanity means to the world ……. said no religion treats women equal to a man in every aspect, be it Hinduism, Christianity or Islam……………All religion says a woman has to obey a man. Women have been denied their rights in every religion. That was the reason Periyar denied all religion…………..There are reformers and feminist around the world who are fighting for women’s rights. I respect all of them, but there is one true feminist in this world and that is Periyar……………Religion is nothing but fear. How much blood has been shed, how many wars have been fought in this world because of religion?…………..God has never killed anyone for their wrongdoing and has remained a spectator. He would never act or react………….There is a threat for all atheists and rationalists around the world. To show our strength, we all should stand united and fight against hatred. Atheism and humanism are the only truths,” she said[6]. The Scroll.in just reproduced that TOI reported[7]. Irony that their correspondents, colunists or reporters could not add more than that TOI published[8].

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar – Interpretation of case laws involving reservation to SCs under the Presidential Order 1950 – Can Christians and Muslims get SC status? (5)

Soosai vs UOI

What Soosai vs UOI judgment says: Castes of Hindu religion identified on ‘untouchability’ related parameters were already scheduled under the 1936 Order. The validity of the order was considered by the Supreme Court in Writ Petition No. 9596/83 in the case of Soosai Vs The Union of India and Others (AIR 1986 SC 733). In para 7 of the judgment the Court had observed that “Now it cannot be disputed that the Caste system is a feature of the Hindu social structure. It is a social phenomenon peculiar to Hindu society. The Apex Court in para 8 of the judgment thus, observed that, “it is therefore, not possible to say that President acted arbitrarily in the exercise of his judgment in enacting paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950.” This is also sustained by the debate in Constituent Assembly which recognised “That the Scheduled Castes were a backward section of the society who were handicapped by the practice of untouchability” and that “This evil practice of untouchability was not recognised by any other religion” i.e. other than Hindu. It is apparent that the Constitution (SC) Order, 1950 relates to castes of Hindu religion. It only relates to the Castes discriminated within the Hindu religious system. The Constitution (SC) Order, 1950 is thus not discriminatory or violative of Articles 14, 15, 16 & 25 of the Constitution nor is it ultra vires of the Constitution as it provides for a special category i.e. the Scheduled Castes who have been given a special status under the Constitution. The Constitution (SC) Order, 1950 is thus neither unconstitutional nor ultra-vires of the Constitution nor it is violative of any fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution. Here, the Christians never appealed or filed any revision petition against this order, but kept quite. At Vatican level, they had many issues and problems, as the Bishops and Cardinals have been following race or caste hierarchical structure. So far, no Black has been elected for the post of Pope, in spite of their claims.

The Bull of Pope Gregory XV, Bulla Romanae Sedis Antistitis, dated 31 January 1623

Christianity, caste and untouchability [1]: Christianity, caste and untouchability: In spite of the tall claims made by the Christians, the caste, racism, untouchability and other factors have been there in Christianity. The hundreds of denominations in different countries based on theology, practices, tribes etc., are the direct proof. Pope Gregory XV published a bull sanctioning caste regulations in the Christian Churches of India. Even the U. N. Commission of Inquiry (1953) into the racial situation in South Africa reported the Biblical background of inspiration for them to adopt “Apartheid” or “Christian caste system” with untouchability [Genesis. 9.25, Joshua. 9.21, 23 & 27]. Untouchability also finds its way to Bible [Joshua. 9.19]. In Ireland, there are separate streets for Roman Catholics and Protestants, as each group treatsothers “untouchables”. Slavery has been a divine approved system [Levi. 25: 44-46; Timothy. 6.11]. Prasadam offered to Jehovah should not be eaten by others [Exo.12:43]. They should not touch things holy to him or offer sacrifice [Levi. 22:25]. Bible should not be taught to others [Jewish Encyclopedia, Vol. 5, p.623; Exo.27:33]. They cannot offer incense [Numbers.16: 40]. They should not approach the holy tabernacle i.e, the “Garba Griha” / Sanctum Sanctorum [Numbers 1.51]. The dishonest Christians  suppress everything and try to fool the gullible SCs and STs projecting that their religion saves them. they could not save their own souls of SCs /STs with dubious methods. There are A to Z Churches with denominations (castes) running into more than 3000 depending upon the nation, language, ethnicity, culture, civilization and other factors. The matrimonial columns appearing in the newspapers and periodicals expose their hypocrisy, as the bride / groom are hunted only on the basis of “caste” and not on the “Christ”!  Crores of Rupees flow into India from abroad to convert India to Christianity. World Christian Organizations never hide this plan. After the Neogi Commission Report, they have only changed their tactics in routing the money. Political pressure at national and international levels is applied through different channels to pump money in. only 30-40% is actually spent under the guise of charity, service, and liberation etc., whereas, 60-70% is adjusted in their manipulated accounts duly certified. They have formed their own high castes and they do not want to share profits with the new converts. They treat them just as “natives” counting numbers and sending statistical figures to parent organizations.

the-constitution-scheduled-castes-order-1950

Theologies floated to suppress the facts: Thus, the discrimination persists and percolates to bottom reaching new complications and crating new social tensions. Therefore, to divert the issue, as decided by the World Council of Churches and other organizations, they set up different “research groups” to shift the blame to Hinduism and escape. After politicizing, they have tried to internationalize the issue. Whoever Indian writer, journalist or “scholar”, who supports this theory, is received aboard usually USA or Germany and taken care of.  “Dalit Theology” is the superior theology masqueraded in mere theoretical egalitarianism to fool “Dalits” projecting Jesus as the Super Star Saviour and Christianity to solve all their social problems, suppressing all cold facts, historical truths and the past tract record of Christianity. “Liberation Theology” is nothing but “Christian Communism” with God offered in different garb mainly advocating violence. It advocates violence, terrorism and anti-national activities in a country where it is preached. After the death of Communism and exposure of their deadly acts in Latin American countries, they have turned their attention to “Dalit Theology”.

Char with the speakers

Pope Gregory XV issued a Bull authorizing Caste[2]: The Pope and the Church have been playing dual roles  as for as India is concerned. Definitely, what the Pope said and what has been reported by Associated Press differs, as AP has tried to interpret the Pope, as if he has recommended that “Christians must reject divisions based on caste” (The Hindu Nov.18, p.12). The Pope Gregory XV (1621-23) has definitely accepted the caste. The Bull of Pope Gregory XV, “Bulla Romanae Sedis Antistitis”, dated 31 January 1623, accedes to the requests of the missionaries to accommodate themselves to certain caste practices and usages of the new converts. Why not then the present Pope annul the Papal Bull issued, instead of recollecting what he had said in 1986. In fact, after his visit, there had been so many “caste problems and issues” within the Indian Church. The “Dalit Christian problem” arose phenomenally. The Supreme Court itself pronounced that if the Church wants reservation based on untouchability and caste, such factors of existence in Christianity should be proven (Soosai vs UOI – AIR 1986). Then, started the >research of Athony Raj, SJ with funds to prove that untouchability and Caste system were there in Christianity and practiced even today.

Dalit Christians demand SC status Indian Express cutting

Whether Muslims can get SC status by converting back to Hindu religion?: A Muslim from audience asked, “I wanted to convert back to Hindu religion and whether I could get SC status, as the Supreme Court pronounced in some cases, that a converted SC-Christian could get back, SC-status, when their SC members accepted him back as his member again. In the same way, if a SC-Muslim wanted to convert back to Hindu religion, whether he could get back SC-status”. Actually, these cases pertain to election candidates, where Christians converts contested elections at reserved constituencies, claiming that they were SCs. When, this was challenged at the courts, the Christians got certificates to the effect that they were Hindu SCs. So the courts pronounced that, as candidate converted back to Hindu religion and got a certificate, documentary evidence to that effect, he was considered as “Hindu”. It is not known as to how the present-day Muslims, who want to claim back their SC-status by converting back, would prove their caste identity.  Ironically, most of them or some of them would also claim that they were not the converted categories from India, but, directly descended from the forefathers, who were of Arabic tribal origins [Ansaris, Mujahideen, and others]. If they were really interested in converting back, why then criticize “Gharwapasi”?

KVR with the speakers

Origin of Caste – the Chairman spoke and wound up the session: The second paper was presented by Bhup Singh Gaur on the approach of Harijans / SCs by Gandhi and Ambedkar. He interpreted that both leaders worked for the upliftment and welfare of the people in their own way. He pointed out that Amedkar was the only leader who attended all the three RTCs and consistently fighting for the rights of Depressed Castes. The third paper, “Dalit – A legal Perspective” was presented by S. Balakrishna Hedge.  His paper was almost answering the issue raised by Tanweer Fazal. Finally, the chair of Prof Chandrama Kanagali presented her paper about the origin of caste in India. She pointed out that the origins of the term ‘caste’ are attributed to the Spanish and Portuguese casta, which, according to the John Minsheu‘s Spanish dictionary (1599), means “race, lineage, or breed”. When the Spanish colonized the New World, they used the word to mean a “clan or lineage.” However, it was the Portuguese who employed casta in the primary modern sense when they applied it to the thousands of endogamous, hereditary Indian social groups they encountered upon their arrival in India in 1498. The use of the spelling “caste,” with this latter meaning, is first attested to in English in 1613.

dalit-word-is-unconstitutional-scheduled-caste-commission

The word “Dalit” is neither constitutional nor legal: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has asked the state governments not to use the word ‘Dalit” in official documents, saying the term was “unconstitutional”. The commission has stated that sometimes the word ‘Dalit” is used as a substitute for Scheduled Caste in official documents, sources in State Tribal Department said in Raipur. After consultation with the legal department, the commission said the ‘Dalit” word is neither constitutional nor the word has been mentioned in the current laws. Rather ‘Scheduled Caste” is the appropriate and notified word as per the Article 341 of the Constitution, it said in a letter sent to all states. The writers and researchers do not care even about this and continue to mention the word for ulterior motive.

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar – Interpretation of case laws involving reservation to SCs under the Presidential Order 1950 – (4)

Prof Chandrama Kanagali

Tanweer Fazal presented a paper on “Caste and conversion Gharwapasi in the Indian Courts”: Tanweer Fazal[1] presented his paper in Room No.B1 on 23rd July [Sunday] morning session held between 9.30 to 11.00 am under the chair of Prof Chandrama Kanagali. The Co-speakers were Bhup Singh Gaur and Balakrishna Hegde. He started his presentation obviously with confusion of “SC” as he started his PPT, without specifically telling as to whether it was “Scheduled Caste” or “Supreme Court” and it was pointed out by K. V. Ramakrishna Rao[2], another speaker from the audience. He corrected himself and proceeded to mention the following cases:

  1. Michael vs Venkateswaran, 1951.
  2. Ganapat vs Returning Officer, 1974.
  3. Anbalagan vs B. Devarajan and Ors, 1983,

Without giving citation of the case laws and quoting from the judgments, he was arguing and interpreting that the courts have been following the “Gharvapasi” concept helping the Hindutwa forces for Christians converting back to Hindu religion to get SC-benefits back.  He could not explain properly about the case laws and the exigencies for the amendment of the Presidential Order in 1956 and 1990 include converted Skihs and Neo-Buddhists under SC category. He also referred to K. P. Manu case, but without giving the case law reference and relevant judgment details. He went on repeating the same point that the Court was acting at the behest of the government giving in such judgments helping the “Gharvapasi” programme. Of course, he was confusing this with Muslims also, as if they were also involved in such court cases.

Tanweer Fazal, JNU

Christians by converting back to Hindu religion can claim back SC status: Then, he pointed out as to how in the case of K. P. Manu, the Court held that he could be back to Ezhawa community, provided they accepted him their community-member[3]. The facts giving rise to the present appeal are that one Shri S. Sreekumar Menon invoked the jurisdiction of the Scrutiny Committee under Section 11(3) of the Act challenging the grant of caste certificate, namely, Hindu Pulaya to the appellant on the ground that the said certificate had been obtained by him on misrepresentation, and that apart the concerned authority had issued the caste certificate in total transgression of law. The Committee conducted an enquiry and eventually by its order dated 4th February, 2006 had returned a finding that the appellant was erroneously issued a caste certificate inasmuch as he was not of Hindu origin and hence, could not have been conferred the benefit of the caste status. It is not in dispute that the great grandfather of the appellant belonged to Hindu Pulaya Community. His son Chothi embraced Christianity and accepted a new name, that is, Varghese who married Mariam who originally belonged to Hindu Ezhava community and later on converted to Christianity. In the wedlock three sons, namely, Varghese, Yohannan and Paulose were born. The father of the appellant, Paulose, got married to Kunjamma who was a Christian. The appellant who was born on 03.01.1960 sometime in the year 1984 at the age of 24 converted himself to Hindu religion and changed his name to that of K.P. Manu. On the basis of the conversion he applied for a caste certificate to Akhila Bharata Ayyappa Seva Sangham. Be it stated, the appellant after conversion had obtained a certificate from the concerned community on 5th February, 1984. Eventually, the Tehsildar who was authorised to issue the caste certificate had issued the necessary caste certificate. The Court had dealt with the three important questions.

  • whether on conversion and at what stage a person born to Christian parents can, after reconversion to the Hindu religion, be eligible to claim the benefit of his original caste;
  • whether after his eligibility is accepted and his original community on a collective basis takes him within its fold, he still can be denied the benefit; and
  • that who should be the authority to opine that he has been following the traditions and customs of a particular caste or not.

Tanweer Fazal, Bhup Sigh, Balakrishna Hegde - The paper presenters

As the Pulaya Community accepted him as their member, he is Hindu only: The Court decided as follows – “In the instant case, the appellant got married to a Christian lady and that has been held against him. It has also been opined that he could not produce any evidence to show that he has been accepted by the community for leading the life of a Hindu. As far as the marriage and leading of Hindu life are concerned, we are of the convinced opinion that, in the instant case, it really cannot be allowed to make any difference. The community which is a recognised organisation by the State Government, has granted the certificate in categorical terms in favour of the appellant. It is the community which has the final say as far as acceptance is concerned, for it accepts the person, on reconversion, and takes him within its fold. Therefore, we are inclined to hold that the appellant after reconversion had come within the fold of the community and thereby became a member of the scheduled caste. Had the community expelled him the matter would have been different. The acceptance is in continuum. Ergo, the reasonings ascribed by the Scrutiny Committee which have been concurred with by the High Court are wholly unsustainable. Consequently, the appeal is allowed and the judgment and order of the High Court, findings of the Scrutiny Committee and the orders passed by the State Government and the second respondent are set aside. The appellant shall be reinstated in service forthwith with all the benefits relating to seniority and his caste, and shall also be paid backwages…..”

Tanweer Fazal, Bhup Sigh, Balakrishna Hegde - audience1

Why Tanweer Fazal was suppressing the “Soosai v. Union of India, AIR 1986 SC 733 judgment”?: During his presentation, there were many factual mistakes in interpreting the court cases. First, he was not mentioning the court case references, but, when K. V. Ramakrishna Rao insisted him to mention the case specifically in the context, he was evidently evading and started making general remarks. He coolly and purposely avoided mentioning “Soosai v. Union of India, AIR 1986 SC 733 judgment”, where, the Court held that SC under the Constitution (SC) Order, 1950 means only Hindu. This has been practice of many writers and researchers not to mention this judgment, as it is not favourable to them. He was obviously mumbled and fumbled without giving any answer. The Chair person also  pointed out and advised him to be specific. Incidentally, a similar paper is already published in EPW and available in the internet[4]. Now, let us discuss the case laws for understanding.

Tanweer Fazal, Bhup Sigh, Balakrishna Hegde - The paper presenters.close view

Michael vs Venkateswaran, 1951 – AIR 1952 Mad 474, (1952) 1 MLJ 239: The first case[5], where a SC was converted to Christian, thus losing his Hindu status, he was barred from contesting reserved constituency, is as follows: “The petitioner alleges that he is a member of the Paraiyan caste which is item 64 in Part V of the Schedule to the Scheduled Castes Order. Admittedly, he is a convert to Christianity. He therefore would be a person professing a religion different from Hinduism and therefore under paragraph 3 of the Scheduled Castes Order would be deemed not to be a member of a scheduled caste. He desires to stand as a candidate for a seat reserved for the Scheduled Castes and he can do so only If he is deemed to be a member of a Scheduled Caste. As the aforesaid provision prevents him from so standing, he has filed the above application for adequate relief from this Court.” But the Court held that “the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order is valid and within the powers of the President, the petition is therefore dismissed”.

Tanweer Fazal, Bhup Sigh, Balakrishna Hegde - audience

Ganpat vs Returning Officer & Ors on 4 December, 1974 – 1975 AIR 420: The second case[6] is about contesting for a seat in Nagpur by a SC candidate after converting to Buddhism, thus, losing their Hindu status. The Court held that, “We would, therefore, in agreement with the High Court hold that the respondents-2, 6 and 9 are not Buddhists but continue to be members of the Scheduled Castes”, but also pointing out, “The attempt of persons who have changed their religion from Hinduism to Buddhism, who still claim the concessions and facilities intended for Hindus only shows that otherwise these persons might get a vested interest in continuing to be members of the Scheduled Castes. In course of time vested interests are created in continuing to be members of Schduled Castes as in continuing to be members of Backward Classes. It is from the point of view of discouraging that tendency that the provision of the Scheduled Castes Order seems to be a proper one.”

Tanweer Fazal, Bhup Sigh, Balakrishna Hegde - with KVR

Anbalagan vs B. Devarajan & Ors on 5 December, 1983 – 1984 AIR 411: In the third case[7], one Devarajan was challenged that he was Christian and therefore, he could not claim SC status, but, it was proved that he “……………had long since reverted to Hinduism and to the Adi Dravida caste. There is not a scrap of acceptable evidence to show that he ever professed Christianity after he came of age. On the other hand, every bit of evidence in the case shows that from his childhood, he was always practising Hindism and was treated by everyone concerned as an Adi Dravidh. There is then the outstanding circumstance that the voters of the Rasipuram Parliamentary Constituency reserved for the Scheduled Castes accepted his candidature for the reserved seat and elected him to the Lok Sabha twice. We have no doubt whatsoever that at all relevant times, he was a Hindu Adi Dravida and professed no religion other than Hinduism. The case was rightly decided by the Election Tribunal and the appeal is accordingly dismissed with costs.”

July 28, 2017

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar (3)

K Raju and Bhalachandra Mungekar

The second day [22-07-2017] proceedings: The security was tight as before and the delegates / speakers had pass through separate entrance. The first plenary session was chaired by K. Raju and there were three speakers – Lord Bhiku Parekh, S. K. Thorat and Samuel Myers between 9.30 to 11.00 am at the main auditorium.

Parik speaking 22-07-2017

What Lord Bhiku spoke: Parekh Like how Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was just not a Baniya, the mercantile caste into which he was born, B.R. Ambedkar was not just a Dalit, but a national leader and a nationalist, noted political scholar Bhikhu Parekh has said. “Like Mahatma Gandhi was not just a Baniya, Rabindranath Tagore was not just a Bengali, Dr. Ambedkar was not just a spokesperson of Dalits. He was an Indian and a nationalist,” said Parekh, while delivering a lecture on the second day of the three-day international conference on B.R. Ambedkar, sponsored by the Congress-ruled Karnataka government here on Saturday [22-07-2017][1]. Recently BJP president Amit Shah’s statement calling Mahatma Gandhi a “Chatur Baniya” drew flak from scholars across the country. Parekh, an acclaimed author of several books on politics and political theory, said that by calling Ambedkar a Dalit leader and a spokesperson, we were reducing the significance of his contribution to the nation[2].

How India became “Republic”, though Nehru opposed: “We have to revisit Ambedkar to reclaim justice” to the marginalised sections of society, he added. Noting that Ambedkar fought for social and economic democracy, he took on Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhai Patel to ensure social and economic justice to the downtrodden and marginalised sections of society. The father of the Indian Constitution fought for inclusion of the word “Republic” in the preamble of the Constitution. For Ambedkar, democracy confined only to political rights, while the “Republic” guaranteed political, economic, and social rights. He recollected about the condition of India soon after Independence. He said that at the time of framing the Constitution, Jawaharlal Nehru did not include the word ‘Republic’ in the first draft[3]. When asked, Nehru said that the word ‘Democracy had included Republic’. In the second draft, Republic was included while the word Democracy was not[4].

Ambedkar and Jewish people

What Ambedkar told about Jews: Dr Ambedkar was interviewed by Glora Becher, Council of Israel in Bombay. His views were published in “Praja bandhu” and then, included in his complete works[5]. “I believe that just as there was a land of promise for the Jews, so the Depressed Classes must be destined to have their land of promise. I trust that just as the Jews reached their land of promise, so will be the Depressed Classes in the end reach their land of promise.”….“I see in the present day condition of the Depressed Classes of India a parallel to the Jews in their captivity in Egypt. In Moses I see a leader whose infinite love for his people has given undaunted courage to face hardships and bear calumny.”…………“I confess that if any thing sustains me in my efforts to emancipate the Depressed Classes, it is the story of Moses undertaking the thankless but noble task of leading Jews out of their captivity.”……..It is only natural that the Jewish people have always looked at Dr. Ambedkar and his life’s work with absolute admiration. His struggle for the weakest sector of society has found an echo in the hearts of those who for many hundreds of years since their expulsion from their “Promised land”—Israel—were suffering from discrimination and persecution just becasue of being different from the majority around. We in Israel are till today proud of Dr. Ambedkar’s support in our struggle for rebuilding our national home in Israel. (Courtesy : News from Israel)[6].”

S K Thorat speaks

Separate settlements for SCs and they should migrate there – S. K. Thorat: Former UGC chairman and present ICSSR chairman S.K. Thorat noted that a large number of Dalit graduates remained unemployed owing to withdrawal of the State following liberal economic policies. He said privatisation of public sector enterprises and contracting out services to the private in the public and government sectors led to the erosion of reservation of jobs to the Scheduled Castes. Reservation had “eroded from the backdoor” by contracting out services. Unemployment was 13 to 14% among Dalits, he said. Under the guise of Liberalization-Privatization-Globalization, reservation is denied to SCs. Therefore, the reservation policy should be like that of Ireland. Though, the Untouchability Act was amended in 1950, 1985 and 2010, the violations are not booked, action taken and punished. To overcome such discrimination, separate settlements should be provided to them and they should migrate to such places.

Samuel Myers speaks

Samuel Myers’s comparison of the Dalits and the blacks: Samuel Myers tried to compare the discrimination acting against the Dallits and the blacks under market and non-market factors. The market factors are identified as  like earnings, employment, housing, education, opportunities, credit, lending and access to wealth. The non-market factors are – sexual assault, victims of hate crimes, …. Some of the audience questioned such comparison, as the controlling factors of the two groups have been totally different, operating at various levels.

Prof G Hargopal

Afternoon plenary session: The afternoon session 2 to 3.30 pm was chaired by the Social scientist G. Haragopal, professor at the National Law School of India University, and the speakers were –

  1. Dalit intellectual Anand Teltumbde[7].
  2. Bronislaw Czarnocha[8]
  3. Marxist economist Prof. Prabhat Patnaik
  4. Hargopal said 2019 would be a critical point in the country’s history, with the Constitution of India “at stake”[9]. “The Congress should look at the growing inequalities in income; it is a matter of concern. India’s richest 1% holds about 58% of the country’s wealth and this phenomenon has only increased under the Modi regime. The Congress should start talking about minimizing inequalities in income as wealth should sub-serve the common good.” Haragopal pointed out how the BJP government has become the favourite of global capitalists[10]. He said the spread of fascism was turning out to be a threat to the Indian Constitution. “The country will reach a critical point in 2019 (when parliamentary polls are scheduled) and we have to be cautious. The minorities are suffering from insecurity and the Congress has a responsibility to protect the Constitution.”

Ambedkar activist - Anand Teltumbde

Anand Teltumbde observed: What he noted…………that the country was living in “de facto fascism” and de jure fascism was just two or three years away. while wealth in the hands of the country’s richest 1% had grown from 53% to 58% after Modi took over and this development is a pointer to the fact that Dalits are at the receiving end. “The ruling classes have been fooling all and there is massive inequality in the country. The VVIP syndrome keeps mocking at the common man and social activists have no space as they are imprisoned or attacked. The concepts of equality, liberty and fraternity have remained mere rhetoric and the poor continue to suffer.” Teltumbde said the Congress has to transform itself with the focus on Ambedkar and fight the Hindutva juggernaut to stop de jure fascism from becoming a reality in the country.

Prof Prabhat Patnaik

Prabhat Patnaik – says openly in 2019 Modi should be defeated: Responding to a statement by former MP Balchandra Mungekar that progressive forces needed to unite with the Congress in 2019, Prabhat Patnaik said[11]: “We are ready to align with the Congress if the Congress also reforms itself.” “With neo-liberalism reaching a dead-end under the Modi regime, a counter-revolution is staring at us. A new vision of India is required and it is important to think of giving economic rights to the people along with political rights.” Patnaik outlined the economic rights as[12]: right to food, right to employment, right to free healthcare, right to quality education and right to free pension for elderly and the disabled. The total cost for providing these rights will be not more than 10% of the Gross Domestic Product, he said, adding: “Through this, we can carry forward the notion of development as envisioned by Ambedkar.”

The tragedy of the Rohith Vermula in 2016 and the results of American elections the same year motivated him to undertake full process of exploration and formulation of the principle of Bisociative revolution.

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar (1)

July 27, 2017

Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 – Quest for Equity  – Reclaiming Social Justice, Revisiting Ambedkar (1)

Dr Ambedkar conference - GKVK- entrance

The Government of Karnataka and Congress sponsored International Conference: The three day “Dr Ambedkar International Conference” was held at the complex of GKVK [Gandhi Krishi Vigjana Kendra], Bellary Road, Bangalore – 560 065. On 12th July, an advertisement appeared in the leading dailies and newspapers that “Dr B.R. Ambedkar International Conference 2017 QUEST FOR EQUITY” would be held giving the website reference[1]. When visited the site, it was found that one had to register as a “Speaker” or “Participant”, but, while trying for “Speaker”, message appeared that it was over. So our members registered as “Participant”. Then, we received message in our phones, “You can collect your badges at our counters at Vetenary college, opposite to CBI officer, Bellary Road, Hebbal, Bengaluru on 21st, 22nd and 23rd July, 2017 between 9 AM and 6 PM. There will be no entry to the venue without authorized badge……..”. Thus, it was evident that conference had been so restrictive and not opened to all. After reaching Bangalore and the venue only, we could understand that the Conference was completely sponsored by the Government of Karnataka and thus by the Congress.

GKVK hall entrance

More invitees, but less space – over-crowded Conference: We collected badges and proceeded to the venue on July 21st afternoon. There was heavy security and checks at different levels before entering the auditorium. The participants were not allowed, but asked to go to the gallery, but, when we went there, where we were informed that the space was meant for the “Speakers”. There was commotion at every level, as more and more categories of persons [VIP, Participant, Speaker, Press, Volunteer and so on] started pouring inside the venue and hall. Nearly more than three hours, all were harassed like anything to go here and there. Then, somehow, we were accommodated in the gallery. In the hall, there was shouting between the audience and the press, for two reasons, the press people were not accommodated properly and they were blamed for obstructing the view. All these were happening, before the arrival of the Chief guests etc. Around 5 pm, the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi entered the stage with many VIPs.

Hiccups galore- Star of Mysore - coverage-of 21-07-2017-2

Nandita Das’ gaffes or the confusion of Congress: The bollywood actress Nandita Das was compeering[2], but involving series of gaffes as dignitaries were welcomed by ministers, the script read over other names. For instance, while MLC Govindarajulu welcomed Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Sathyarthi, Das read it as agriculture minister Krishna Byre Gowda. When leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna M Kharge was invited by Byre Gowda, Das said, “He will be welcomed by minister R. Roshan Baig.” When the audience burst out with laughter, Das realizing the gaffe, said: “It is not my fault….they (ministers) are changing. I am just reading from the script”. In other words, the bouquets were handed over to the persons, not matching with the names of the persons announced. Even the dignitaries on the dais were embarrassed by this turn of events[3].  It was also pointed out that not only Rs.22 crores were spent in extravagant manner, but, also 3,000 invitations were given away, while the capacity of the auditourium was only 1,000, thus, virtually creating a stampede.

Man shouted slogans at conference-siddharamaiah started speaking-1

Siddharamaiah’s tirade against BJP: Siddaramaiah said the recent spate of communal and caste-based attacks has shown that people cannot afford to rest. Endorsing Rahul’s views, the CM said: “Today, we are told that being a good Indian means we have to ignore the inequality and exploitation in our midst; that we need to adhere to rigid norms regarding food, clothing, language and free speech; that we have to privilege the majoritarian view of India. I reject such a view as it is totally opposed to the letter and spirit of our Constitution.” He the idea of India as a plural society is at the crossroads. “Values that our civilization and culture held in high esteem are facing a critical test in view of the onslaught of divisive and exclusivist ideas,” he said[4]. His desperate tirade against made him exposed that he was perhaps preparing for the last battle.

Martin Luther King III-Modi has unleashed a ferocious animosity against minorities.

Martin Luther King – III – his unwanted talk on Indian society etc: ‘Modi’s election, like Trump’s, has unleashed violence against minorities’ American human rights advocate Martin Luther King III was unflattering in his comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern for the poor and the rule of law[5]. Drawing parallels between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Martin Luther King III, the son of American civil rights movement icon Martin Luther King Jr, said here on Friday [21-07-2017] that both have limited regard for the poor and for law and order. King III, a human rights advocate and community activist was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day conference “Quest for equity – Reclaiming social justice, revisiting Ambedkar”, in which around 300 scholars, activists and policymakers will discuss the ideas of Dr BR Ambedkar. King III, whose father championed the rights of black Americans in the mid 20th century, said both countries are led by individuals who have limited regard for the poor and disinherited[6].

Martin speech - DC_BLR_2017-07-23_maip1_19

Martin Luther and Ambedkar compared: He drew parallels between US President Donald Trump and Modi and said that both had unleashed “ferocious animosity” against the minorities which had be countered by the people rising up against it[7]. He pointed to similarities between the Dalit lives matter and black lives matter movements in the two countries and outlined the ongoing Dalit agitation in Gujarat. He also spoke of the parallels in the lives, thoughts, struggles and philosophies of his father Martin Luther King Jr and Ambedkar.  “The political situation is the same in the US and India. There is the alt right and Hindu nationalists who are dominating. We are both led by men who have unleashed ferocious animosity against the minorities. In India, cow vigilantes are lynching Muslims, Dalits and unfortunate women. People who believe India is a Hindu nation are being placed in positions of power. We must resist,” he said. India’s caste system, he contended, was a prison without walls for more than 200 million Dalits[8].

1000 labourers worked for the conference

20 crore spent Mega International Conference with contradictions, confusions and politicized speeches: A sum of ₹20 crore was spent on three-day international conference ‘Quest for equity–reclaiming social justice, revisiting Ambedkar’, to mark the 126th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar from July 21 to 23 2017 on GKVK campus of the UAS-B[9]. Nearly a dozen round-table conferences had been organised, Public Works Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, who has in-charge of the event, told presspersons, adding that Web telecast had been arranged for the benefit of students and faculty of 13 universities in the State[10]. On July 21st [Friday] evening, the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi came to inaugurate the conference. Civil rights activist Martin Luther King III and host of Social and political thinkers, philosophers, academicians, activists and others had been the speakers. During the inaugural function, there were some glaring short comings in compeering made by Nandita Das, lighting of lamp etc. When Nandita Das was calling the names for the distribution of mementos, there was utter confusion and in fact, she retorted that she was not responsible for such goof-up[11]. At the time of lighting lamp, almost, all on the stage were with shoes and chappals.

GKVK - Sathyarti, Prakash Ambedkar speaking

Kailash Sathyarthi speech: Nobel laureate Kailash Sathyarthi said it was not enough to just remember Dr Ambedkar from time to time. “We must live with Babasaheb inside each of us,” Sathyarthi said. Sathyarthi said it was a great testament to the continuing power of Dr Ambedkar that India’s presidential elections was a contest between two Dalits, Ramnath Kovind and Meira Kumar. He was narrating his story as to how he was to suffer, though he was a born Brahmin, but tried to bring SCs to enter the Nathwada temple. The temple priest reportedly attacked him and he was ordered and forced to clean his legs as repentance. Kailash refused to do that and changed his name to “Sathyarthi” [seeker of truth]. Millions of children are not in schools, but they are in the fields. In the same way, young girls are thrown to prostitution. They are the children of Ambedkar. In India, there are two issues that are not discussed – 1. Child labour and 2. Human trafficking. This has been all over the world. Though, he talked about these, he never opened his mouth about pedophiles prowling in India and raping the children up to 18 years old. It is well known that most of the pedophiles have been foreigners and that too Christians and priests also. Note the Christian orphanages have been supplying girls and boys to them, as revealed in thousands of cases reported and unreported. And “Sathyarthi” [seeker of truth] never talks about all these issues, though, children are involved. Had he raised these issues, perhaps, he would not have recommended, nominated for and got Nobel Prize.

Gandhi Congress conducted Cow-slaughter in public in God’s own country Kerala with highest litracy and Beef-fest also and Communists happy to eat! (2)

May 29, 2017

Gandhi Congress conducted Cow-slaughter in public in God’s own country Kerala with highest litracy and Beef-fest also and Communists happy to eat! (2)

Meat export- India

Why CPIM also repeat the tune of Rahul saying that “It is a thoughtless act”:  “It is a thoughtless act and it will only help Sangh Parivar outfits. It is sad that Youth Congress activists stooped so low for publicity,” CPI (M) Member of Parliament MB Rajesh said. Thus, whatever ideology, they speak before the media, they have been concious of what the act could lead to. Beef is a staple in Kerala and the new rules have caused widespread anger. Though Kerala is one of the few states where cow slaughter is not banned, animal lovers said “such brazen acts” glorify cruelty towards animals and demanded action against Youth Congress activists. The BJP, which is trying to gain a toehold in the state and won its first seat in the last year’s assembly election, also criticised the slaughtering of the animal at a busy market in the heart of Kannur while the Congress asked its cadres to use restrain during protests. BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan tweeted the video of the slaughter, saying it was the “cruelty at its peak”. Youth Congress activists defended their move, saying it was a natural form of protest. “The Centre is denying food to the people, it is the biggest cruelty,” Youth Congress leader Rejil Makutty said. Police registered a case against Youth Congress activists who slaughtered a cow in public and cooked its meat. They were booked under IPC Section 428 and section (ii) of the PCA Act 1960.

28-05-2017 beef-fest Kannur Cong and DYFI- cutting cow

Country’s Rs 1 lakh-crore meat industry or BJP’s alleged Hindutva agenda: The Centre’s decision, which will hurt millions of poor farmers and squeeze supplies to the country’s Rs 1 lakh-crore meat industry, is being seen as a move to push the BJP’s alleged Hindutva agenda. Cows are considered holy by many Hindus, and have gained in importance since Prime Minister Narendra Modi stormed to power in 2014 with several BJP-ruled states enacting strict laws to punish cow slaughter. As protest mounted in the state, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the Centre couldn’t draw up a menu and change the food habits of people. “Today it is saying you can’t eat beef, tomorrow it can say no to fish also. We will not allow this to happen in our state,” the CM said, adding the decision would leave many people jobless. The state government is talking to legal experts to challenge the notification. Many of the ruling CPI (M) leaders come from Kannur, where the Left party is involved in a bloody turf war with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, the ideological parent of the BJP. In Kerala at least 500,000 people are directly or indirectly involved in cattle trade, slaughterhouses and allied areas. According to the state animal husbandry department data, 117,000 adult cattle and 70,000 young cattle were slaughtered in Kerala in 2016 where beef accounts for 60% of the total meat consumed. Since most of the cattle come from the neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Kerala meat traders fear that the new notification will embolden Hindu fringe outfits and hit supply leading to a shortage of meat in the state. Cow slaughter and smuggling are banned in most parts of the country but there are no curbs on buffalo meat, which is eaten widely as a cheap source of protein. But the new norms will also hit buffalo meat, which goes by different names globally and is also referred to as beef in India, a reason enough for the so-called cow protectors to assault people or even force shut down of eateries.

Muslims would be the worst affected, because of the restriction: The government has banned the sale of cows and buffaloes for slaughter through animal markets, rules that will hurt millions of poor farmers and squeeze supplies to the country’s meat industry, thus the media too started propaganda[1]. However, it has been cautious enough to tell the fact, “The new rules do not amount to a blanket ban on cattle trade or their slaughter, and license breeding remains legal”[2]. But the move will crimp supplies to the country’s Rs 1-lakh crore meat and allied industries which sources about 90% of their requirements from animal markets. The worst hit, however, will be the mostly Muslim meat and leather traders who face mounting violence by increasingly assertive cow vigilante groups. Farmers will also be hit because they will be deprived of a traditional source of income from selling non-milch and ageing cattle.

The new procedure introduced fir the sale of cattle for slaughter: The central regulation for cattle business notified this week allows only farmland owners to trade at animal markets. The notification covers bulls, bullocks, cows, buffaloes, steers, heifers and calves, as well as the camel trade. To be implemented in the next three months, the move introduces lots of paperwork for cow traders who are mostly poor and illiterate. For instance, before the trade, both seller and buyer will have to produce identity and farmland ownership documents. After buying a cow, a trader must make five copies of proof of sale and submit them at the local revenue office, the local veterinary doctor in the district of the purchaser, animal market committee, apart from one each for seller and buyer. “Take an undertaking that the animals are bought for agriculture purposes and not for slaughter,” reads a directive to committees overseeing animal markets in the rule notified under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act of 1960 that gives the Centre powers over animal welfare. The new rules were approved by former environment minister Anil Madhav Dave before his death last week, ministry sources told HT. The ministry drafted the rules on Supreme Court directions aimed at improving condition of animals in these markets. Considered holy by many Hindus, cows are a sensitive political topic and have gained in importance since Prime Minister Narendra Modi stormed to power in 2014 as several BJP-ruled states enacted strict laws to punish cow slaughter. But many say the expanding protection for bovines is a proxy war against Dalits and Muslims – as exemplified by the lynching of dairy farmer Pehlu Khan in Rajasthan in April or the flogging of Dalit men in Gujarat’s Una last year. Slaughter of milch cows is banned in all states except in Kerala and in parts of north-east India.

Kerala officially opposing the new law on “cattle business”: The Union government’s new notification banning the sale of cows and buffaloes for slaughter is a “fascist and anti-federal move” and the Centre can’t prepare a menu for the people of the country, Kerala’s Left government said on 27-05-2017, Friday[3]. “We will not allow the (central) government to enforce fascist policies of the RSS and other fringe outfits. Let it issue many such notifications, we will not follow them,” said Kerala’s agriculture minister VS Sunil Kumar. The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office also criticised the slaughter ban[4], saying “Cattle slaughter becomes illegal at a time when manslaughter happens in the name of cow”. In a series of tweets, it said, the new regulation “will rob lakhs of jobs, cripple leather industry”. It called the notification an “attack on our poor, dalits & farmers”. The CMO said food consumption of millions of people will be affected by the “clear attack on our plurality, the essence of India”. The Congress also criticised the Union government’s latest notification.

The introduction of law coincided with Ramzan and therefore against Islam: “It is against the Constitution of the country and infringes upon the right of citizens,” said MM Hassan, acting president of the state Congress. He said the timing of the notification makes it more intriguing, as the Muslim holy month of Ramzan was scheduled to begin on Friday. In Kerala, around 60% of the total meat consumed is beef. Not just Muslims and Christians, many Hindus are also fond of dishes made of the red meat. A raid by Delhi Police at the Kerala House kitchen in the national capital a couple of years ago had triggered outrage in the state. Many student organisations had conducted ‘beef festivals’ in protest against the police action. People in many states in the north-east also eat beef. “It is a very bad decision. We don’t agree to it and won’t implement it,” said Mizoram’s animal husbandry minister C Ngunlianchunga. Mhao, the owner of Taochi Enterprise, one of the biggest meat suppliers in the north-east, said: “I don’t think the rule will be applicable to the north-east. It will be chaotic and a body blow to business. Why are they digging into our plates?” The environment ministry this week notified a regulation under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 prohibiting sale of cattle through animal markets across the country. Regulating animal trade is a state business but animal welfare is a central subject, thereby providing the window for the ministry to notify the rule.
