The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – IHC has become congress of Rowdy historians! [6]

Marxist women historians, 1

Women who run riot talked about women: The two-day session on ‘Women in India: Reconstructing women’s history’, organised by The Aligarh Historians’ Society, as part of the Indian History Congress (IHC), once again brought to the fore the contentious issue of women’s entry in Sabarimala, as also the issues of gender equality and exploitation of women[1]. Parvathi Menon, who presented the paper on ‘Sabarimala and Women’, said that though women used to enter Sabarimala in the past, and the attitudes towards menstruating women entering the temples were flexible as late as the 1980s, it was still a taboo[2]. The taboo against fertile women entering the Sabarimala precincts was given legal sanction as late as 1991 through a Kerala high court judgment, she pointed out. After the apex court verdict in 2018, permitting women’s entry, the controversy took political tones and a group took the battle to the streets. “The arguments being advanced by defenders of the ban on childbearing age women entering the temples, that Ayyappan is a celibate god, are of recent origin in the centuries-long development of Ayyappa worship, and reflect the mainstreaming of the worship into the Vedic period,” she said.

The Marxist interpretation of women-only encourage Islamic fundamentalism: Without changing mindsets, especially in respect of the new and shackling obscurantisms in the form of personal laws and superstitious beliefs, the gain that Kerala has achieved in great measure through public action towards women’s equality will be eroded, she added, underscoring the contradictions in the Kerala society and the denial of self-reliance for women in the man-woman relationship or in the family. Shalini Shah, in her paper, ‘Engendering female body, sexuality and desire in the Sanskritic tradition’, also discussed the issue of Sabarimala, in the context of female sexuality. “In the masculinist world, ‘sexual desire’ is a male prerogative. Women can be the object of desire, but not a desiring subject themselves,” she pointed out, adding, “We thus see that only a specific kind of woman was objectified in the masculinist discourse as sexually alluring. So, from an entirely male point of view, it is safe for the women of a specific age to enter the precincts of a Brahmachari deity.” Charu Gupta, in her paper, said feminist historians have underlined that both social reforms and nationalism have had an ambiguous relationship with the gender question. The presentations that lasted for two days had 18 papers that explored various aspects of women’s identity, based on myths, legends and social reality across the world. However, they could not discuss anything on Muslim women Triple Talaq Act, progress of them and other minority women.

A Mohammedan minister came to speak for Mohammedans: Minister for higher education K T Jaleel has said no government has ever succeeded in detaining or degrading the minorities[3]. Addressing a special session on the concluding day of the Indian History Congress (IHC) here on Monday 30-12-2019, he said the history shows that the minorities contributed immensely in the progress of the respective nations and society[4]. “French historians noted that France began to decline after the banishment of minorities from their country. If Jews had not been displaced or murdered massively by Hitler, Germany would have become a super economic power of the world,” he said. “The recent CAA, NPR and NRC are imposed hurriedly as part of the political agenda,” he said, adding that historians have to protest and condemn moves against a minority community. However, he did not make any whisper as to how the illegal migrants of Myanmar, Bangladesh etc., have been affecting the Kerala society, polity and economy. He could not discuss about the ISIS problem that is encouraged by the infiltrators from Pakistan, Afganistan etc. In other words, the IHC historians have been colluding with the politicians in this way, to spoil the academic proceedings. Thus, it is evident that the IHC gang and the communists of Kerala have decided to host IHC at Kannur and exploit it, but, the ugly events exposed their hidden agenda bringing bad name to them.

Resolutions passed as usual and none bothers: IHC concluded and deplored the detention of four delegates following the commotion at the inaugural ceremony on December 28 and called for the defence of the composite culture of the country[5]. The resolution passed in this connection also requested the state government not to share the details of the detained people to any central or other agencies[6]. “Confident that the Kerala state government is vigilant in fulfilling its promise of protecting the civil liberty of all citizens, the Indian History Congress hopes that the state government will (a) duly train the police personnel in managing security, and (b) ensure that the personal details of the individuals detained are not communicated to any central or other agencies,” it said. Many resolutions at the IHC were in connections with the present political turbulence over CAA, Jammu and Kashmir and related issues. The IHC without knowing the legality and their local standi, they go on pass such resolutions for the last 35 years, but, none bother and bothered about it. When B. R. Grover was alive, he was the only person to point out their vanity, futility and useless nature of resolutions. As IHC has been losing credibility year by year and now proven to be a den of rowdies, the coming years might witness strength coming down. Moreover, their arrangements of transport, accommodation and food have also been coming down, while the delegate fees increasing. Thus, the delegates were also not satisfied in all aspects.

Urban naxal elite gang-2

The agenda of opposing ruling government exposed: Expressing concern over the adverse conditions for research and educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, owing to the official closure of internet and libraries, and non-functioning of educational institutions since August, the IHC, in another resolution, called upon the authorities to lift restrictions on internet and take measures to restore normalcy in J&K. It also condemned the police action in some universities following protests against CAA. The resolution said it is conscious of the adverse effects such violent acts will have on academic freedom and pursuit of research and instruction. “Political figures should refrain from inaccurate statements as the one about India having been under ‘foreign rule for one thousand years’ as if all Muslim rulers were foreigners,” read another resolution. Disagreement with the National Education Policy, another resolution said the move to infuse ‘heavy dose of Sanskrit’ at all levels of education including science and technology, social science and Indian system of knowledge… will make education not only static but unequal and unjust for many. In another resolution on ‘built heritage,’ it said the Indian heritage is still in danger, and there were efforts to alter the authenticity of monuments that have affected their historicity. IHC president Amiya Kumar Bagchi, secretary Mahalakshmi Ramakrishnan and treasurer Burton Cleetus denied any protocol violation on their part at the inaugural ceremony.

Kannur university hosted IHC, office barriers

Questions raised and posed to historians, history students and related persons: Having seen the behaviour of the historians, the general public may raise many questions:

  1. The IHC historians have been reportedly highly educated, elite, emeritus and so on, why then, they behaved in this way?
  2. Why the well-learned professors, HODs, and others raised hands, turned their faces ugly, shouted badly and virtually run riot before others?
  3. Definitely, they must have known what is decency and decorum to be maintained in such functions. They have invited Governors, Chief Ministers, Prime Ministers etc., and therefore, treating the same class differently raises the credibility, accountability and responsibility.
  4. What the youngsters, young students and others would think about these historians and others? Or they giving field-training in this way to become rowdy-historians in coming years.
  5. Would they want to nurture, teach and bring up good students or rowdies, raising slogans, disrespecting the authorities, fighting with the police and so on?
  6. The “two women delegates” were actually, verifying the genuine nature of the members and giving clearance. However, on 27th, they were virtually harassing the delegates because of their technical fault [they are not getting the connection or some issue]. How then, these two could run riot?
  7. Or, were the organizers planned to use these women as a front to create a problem and get undue publicity?
  8. Had all involved been really interested in history, research and related areas, they would not have indulged in such “unhistorical,” un-academic and unruly activities. Yet they did – proved that they had bad intentions.
  9. Historians have not done their duty for the last 70 years and therefore, they cannot do anything with the Acts and laws of the land. Therefore, it is better they concentrate in history and save their honour instead of poking nose in politics etc. Would they learn a lesson or do otherwise?

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – IHC has become congress of Rowdy historians! [5]

A K Balan, Arif and Habib

Law Minister A K Balan tried to play down the turn of events: The governor on Sunday 29-12-2019, said historian Irfan Habib had tried to manhandle his aide-de-camp and added the protesters were not ready to hear him when he started responding to their position[1]. Speaking to a news channel later, the governor reiterated that protocol was violated during the event. “Governor’s programme duration shouldn’t be more than one hour. The organisers violated the schedule. The names of two speakers, including Habib, were not there on the initial programme list. But I sat there for one-and-a-half hours listening to speeches,” he said[2]. Earlier in the day, Khan summoned Chief Secretary Tom Jose to Raj Bhavan over the Kannur incident. Sources said the governor expressed his unhappiness over the ‘protocol violation’ and sought a reply. Law Minister A K Balan tried to play down the turn of events by saying the chief secretary met Khan to apprise him of the details of the Cabinet decisions. As a law minister, obviously, he realized the consequences, whereas, the senile Habib could not do that. Kannur University vice-chancellor said earlier in the day that there was a violation of the protocol and Habib’s speech was not included in the programme schedule. It shows that the hosting VC knew what was happening or what Habib would do on the stage. Therefore, the involvement and collusion of VC with Habib could be noted. In any case, much damage has been done to IHC that could be repaired with much difficulty in the coming years.

Marxist historians, India

IHC has become a den of Marxist historians: Established in 1935, and have 2530 life members, 33,000 annual members. The IHC enjoys ‘monopoly’ over the historical narrative of the country, and almost all the history books promoted by the central government (NCERT, recommended in Central Universities syllabus), state governments, are written by the members of IHC.  Habib is a son of Mohammed Habib, a Marxist historian from Aligarh Muslim University, and grandson of Mohammed Naseem, a wealthy barrister and a member of Congress party. He was a professor of History at AMU and later appointed as Professor Emeritus after retirement. The “eminent” members IHC are the usual suspects, who presented or fabricated the evidence contrary to the historical Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, on which Babri Masjid was constructed. Romila Thapar, D N Jha, Bipin, Chandra, Satish Chandra, R S Sharma, Mridula Mukherjee, Nurul Hasan, Sumit Sarkar, Athar Ali and many others enjoyed a monopoly over the official narrative of history. Post the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict that came in favour of the temple, these leftist historians stood exposed. And the more interesting fact is, almost all of them are self-described Marxists and belong to ‘Marxist school of historiography’. In historiography, this type of stereotypes, monopoly, and forceful thrust of ideology do not work in the long run. Definitely, people have started questioning their ideology, as in practice, it does not work. Therefore, any ideology that does not solve the basics of common people, would be thrown away automatically.

Marxist historians, India-2

Marxist-Mohammedan medieval historiography forced and imposed by JNU-DU-AMU gang: Almost all the office bearers, regional members, sectional presidents, and E. C. are “Marxists”. A person does not enjoy ’eminence’ until and unless s/he is a member of IHC, and this body has a monopoly of Marxists[3]. The topmost professional body of Historians is dominated by the people from one school of thought; one could not find a single member from any other non-Marxist school in this body[4]. The members of IHC also dominated the government history research bodies like- Indian Council of Historical Research, an institution under Ministry of HRD. Habib was chairman of ICHR from 1986 – 1993, and he employed his colleagues from IHC at ICHR too. After the Modi government came to power, it tried to end the monopoly of Marxist and Nehruvian historians, by placing historians from diverse schools of thought. The monopolized, autocratic and dominated attitude and behaviour only led to the creation of local history congresses in each state. However, by blaming BJP, RSS or any right-wingers, these leftists, Marxist, Mohammedans and other divisive gangs cannot do anything good to the country. That is why people have lost interest in history and historians. Many universities removed history subject/courses from the curriculum, as it could not fetch any job in the current scenario.

Marxist historians, India-3

Definitely, the unruly acts of historians were planned: As an observer, I can register the facts that the learned Habib had lied, on many accounts. All delegates were thoroughly frisked, checked and allowed inside. Therefore, if some of “delegates” or “historians” entered with placards, then, he was responsible for such act as the president. That means, they entered evidently with the good books of Irfan Habib or under his clout. The Kerala MP K. K. Ragesh only started talking politics exceeding limits and the governor had to respond.  Had they [the historians] had come for the history, Irfan should have first prevented that MP as he spoiled the so-called “scientific and secular nature of history” principle reportedly followed by the IHC. As he accused Kerala government, then, the government could react to Habib? Habib has become senile and evidently, he does not know the Act and Rules in these aspects, and therefore talking definitely nonsense about “posting police” etc. Let him worry about the history and not to politicize and spoil IHC. The planned rowdyism of IHC gang could be seen here[5]. The video exposes the ugly mindset and behaviour of the so-called eminent historians. The irony that the so-called eminent, elite and emeritus historians behaved like politicians, agents of some political and party paid protesters! Since 1980s, these “historians” have been divided into “Marxist,” “AMU,” “JNU,”  “Mohammedan, “Bengali” and so on!  They never cared for the South Indians. They have one set of 30-40 persons and group regroup and manipulate the governing body and enjoy life. Even after retirement, as they want to monopolize they have been doing this academic fraud to sideline other historians. Here, Irfan Habib physically misbehaved with the Governor, as could be clearly noted from the videos. This is a security breach and unbecoming for a historian like him.

Marxist historians, India-fraud

Dalits, women and Muslims: When the first day was ruined with the folly of the senile old man, the next day was dominated with the heavy dosage of old wine in old bottles making the listeners to sleep. As the hall was air-conditioned, in the sweating Kannur climate, some hundreds went there and took good rest. On the second day 29-12-2019, of the Indian History Congress (IHC), history of the marginalized assumed centre stage and there were deliberations on women, dalits and the marginalized sections[6]. It appears that these historians, unwittingly, have taken up the old failed thesis to whip up the passion, but, as awareness has been created, they cannot fool the public.  The speakers who addressed various sessions opined that what we need is not rewriting history but adding new things to it. There were efforts to rewrite history, they said[7]. Historian Rajan Gurukkal, who chaired a session on Kerala history, said that the process of writing history will go on and the imagined state of the end of history will never happen. Historian Kesavan Veluthat, another panellist, said “William Logan idolised Nairs and termed them as ‘great Nairs, while he demonized Muslims and referred to them as ‘horrible Muslims’.” Historian Sanal Mohan talked about the challenges of alternative history and said that unless we did not have archives, we would not be able to tell anything new. The session on dalit history opined that there should be more studies on this segment. The influence of dalit politics in literature was one main aspect of the session. They went on mentioning the expression “dalit”, whereas, the government long back, ordered through a circular not to use it, as it is neither legal nor constitutional. Moreover, when the PM government came to power, it also instructed not to use it[8]. The session ‘Women in India: Reconstructing Women’s History’ by Aligarh Historians’ Society deliberated upon the rights of women and issues they face.

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University –The Governor speech was interrupted, Irfan Habib created a scene on the stage misbehaving! [4]

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University –The Governor speech was interrupted, Irfan Habib created a scene on the stage misbehaving! [4]

IHC - the two girls that created ruckus, Deepak touching police

Note those two “women-delegates,” who were used as a front, to start the ruckus and ten run riot to spoil the image of IHC.

IHC - the girl that created problem

See her face, how it changes…………..

IHC - the girl that created problem, how much strength

Yes, she can use force, as could be seen from her facial expression of violence…

The Bengali girl tossed the cap of the police

In that skirmish, the Lady-police hat was tossed and she catches it and wears! Thus, the so-called “woman-delegate” has no decency to respect a “Woman-police”! Is that way, she has been taught to oppose the authority?

Irfan Habib, the two women delegates and the rabble-rousing historians are not innocent: The media continued to report twisting the facts of events, as follows: “When the governor touched upon the subject of the CAA and defended the Centre, some participants started raising their voices in protest. When he said the house is open for discussion, two women delegates who were research fellows in the JNU, raised placards saying ‘this house (India) is not open for any discussions’. Even though the governor was heard saying that they have the right to protest democratically, the security officers tried to eject them. By then, the atmosphere was charged. Participants, students and professors began chanting slogans against the governor’s “political remarks”. According to some delegates, Khan quoted Maulana Azad, saying “the Partition took the dirt away but some potholes were left behind, where water has collected and now it is stinking.” He told the protestors, “You are causing a foul smell. Maulana Azad had said this for you.” This is when noted historian, professor Irfan Habib stood up and asked him to “quote Nathuram Godse” rather than Maulana Azad or Gandhi”. The media has utterly failed in pointing out the illegal misbehaviour, misconduct and unruly act of Irfan Habib and the so-called “women delegates”!

Histrisans shouting at Governer

Historians shouted and created ruckus-2

Historians shouted and created ruckus-3

Running riot historians or delegates

Running riot historians or delegates or mob

How the media has been mischievous in glorifying the rowdy behaviour of the historians: The media continued to report twisting the facts of events, as follows: “Particularly unseemly was the pandemonium that marked the inaugural with the distinguished historian and president of the current IHC, Irfan Habib (Aligarh school) getting up from his chair on the stage to remark, “The Governor may talk about Godse but not Maulana Azad.” That punctuated the Governor’s presentation with a full stop[1]. Mr Khan had his dander up, provoking the protesters to debunk the constitutional head for what they called his “unwarranted political remarks”. It needs to be underlined that the Indian History Congress ought not to be the venue of an ideological spat[2]. While the West Bengal Governor was barred from entering the JU campus as Chancellor on convocation day, the Kerala Governor, Mr Arif Mohammad Khan, was booed so severely that he had to wind up his address, claiming that his freedom of speech was being denied”.  Silly, stupid and ridiculous for the media to conclude that the act of disrespecting the Governors in the universities is a great job. That proves their ugly mindset of acting against the Act and Rules of this nation.

Irfan Habib tried to prevent Governer-4

Irfan’s idiotic talk of IHC not inviting the Governor: The media continued to report twisting the facts of events, as follows: “Historian Irfan Habib said the Indian History Congress (IHC) did not invite Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and it was the host institution, Kannur University, which invited him and other political leaders. “It is the right of the host institution to invite, however, we would not have thought of him,” the historian said criticising the Governor[3]. He was responding to the event that unfolded during the inauguration of the 80th session of the IHC at the university. He told The Hindu that the delegates were provoked when he started to speak about the Citizenship Amendment Act and denounced the Muslims. “The Governor was not invited to speak on CAA and the time of IHC is not for wasting,” he said adding that the Governor had the right to speak to an audience of his own[4]. The historian pointed out that the Governor was going into things that were no concern to the IHC. He was asked to address the IHC and not to a political audience, he asserted. Asked if there was a violation of the Governor’s protocol, Mr. Habib said the protocol did not govern the IHC and they had their own constitution. The members of IHC are governed by the Indian Constitution and the IHC’s, he said adding that the Governor’s protocol was false. Habib pointed out that in the past the President, the Vice-President and other eminent people attended the congress without any protocol. Habib was also critical of the Kerala government for posting the police at the IHC venue. The government should explain why policemen were deputed and four people were detained, he said. Habib also accused the police of obstructing him, when they had no business to be on the podium. So he pushed them aside to speak to the local secretary. He also expressed his concern that it happened in Kerala, where the Left government was governing.

Irfan pulled by Kannur VC and taken aside

Irfan Habib’s lies and the media coverage: There have been many documents that lay mandatory conditions as to how a Governor has to be treated when he is invited for any function. A University is a place, where, educated people are there, it is unimaginable that such events could have taken place at Kannur. Being a responsible historian, Habib went on telling lies.:

  1. Whether IHC invited, Kannur University invited, that is immaterial, as the so-called historians have to behave properly respecting the post.
  2. The Governor has not only been head of the Kerala State, but, Chancellor of all Universities of Kerala.
  3. The VC of Kannur University is responsible for the behaviour of the historians or delegates, who came there.
  4. As the Kannur University hosted the session, the IHC has been equally responsible for the decent behaviour and smooth proceedings of the deliberations.
  5. That the “women-delegates” were so prompt and ready to swing in action to show the placards, shout slogans and roughly behaved with the police proved that they had planned already.
  6. Habib’s blabbering that, “the Governor had the right to speak to an audience of his own,” is idiotic, because, he was the first person started heckling and interfering with the speech of the Governor.
  7. Habib’s, “I am 88; his ADC must have been 35 or 40. You can imagine the falsity of this statement from these facts,” rant[5] has been totally false, as the video proved his behaviour.
  8. Ironically, not only ADC, the VC had to control him, pull his hands, pulled him aside and made him to sit away from the Governor. So all had watched how the 88 behaved with vigour!
  9. The reporter of “The Hindu” and other media houses should know some fundamentals about the duties of Chancellor, VC and other dignitaries of the University.
  10. The IHC had involved in politics long back and the historians cannot fool common people and citizens of India. Perhaps, the people might start questioning them one day, if they continue to lie in this fashion. It is not their “Marxist or Mohammedan historiography” to interpret, misinterpret or distort to suit them without any objectivity, impartiality and neutrality.

Irfan Habib a liar, rowdy

What Governor told

Telling lies bad for historians: The media continued to report twisting the facts of events, as follows: “Historians[6], Jabir Raza of AMU and Farhat Hasan of DU, said[7], “When the protests commenced, professor Irfan Habib, who was on the dais in the capacity of the outgoing president of the IHC, got up from his seat and proceeded to the VC of Kannur University, Gopinath Ravindran, to request him to stop what was happening and requested the governor to refrain from turning the IHC into his political arena. He had also requested the governor to stop making remarks of the nature he was indulging in. As soon as Habib went there, the ADC and the security officer of the governor pushed him aside and tried to stop him. The governor, too, started accusing Habib of trying to stop him from speaking.” But, these two were sitting 100 ft away among the audience, of course shouting at the Governor, as the videos show, therefore, they had lied only. Irony and regrettable that the historians behave like rowdies.

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – Highly politicized and spoiled show – The Governor targeted with agenda! [3]

IHC Kannur politicized with rowdyism

The ugly political background of the present IHC: The background of Kannur and politics have to be known, probed and understood by historians. IHC has been conducting its annual tamasha only in Communist, congress and Mohammedan dominated areas since 1980s. It is a fact that those government sponsor and grant money, so that their political ideologies are nurtured, percolated through papers and getting published in the proceedings. This is how the academic proceedings have been manipulated. Instead of uniting youth, they have been doing their worst to divide them based on communalized ideology, ideologized polity and politicized pseudo-secularism. None could imagine that Ambedkar did not know secularism, just because, it was inserted later. Therefore, the amendment of the provisions of the Constitution according to the existing exigency has been quite normal, whereas, the opposition parties have been trying to run riot on one or other pretext.

  14. Dr Manjula Poyil was elected as Treasurer.

Apart from them, cultural leaders, representatives of the people, political party leaders, research scholars, journalists, teachers and students are also part of the committee[4]. Pro VC Dr PT Raveendran presided over the meeting. VC Dr Gopinath Raveendran spoke about the importance of the event.

  1. Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally was the chief guest.
  2. District panchayath president KV Sumesh,
  3. corporation councillor Lisha Deepak,
  4. Dr VPP Mushtafa, Biju Kandakkai, A Nishanth, Dr John Joseph,
  5. CPM district secretary MV Jayarajan,
  6. CPI district secretary P Santhosh Kumar,
  7. IUML district general secretary Abdul Karim Cheleri, Dr Manjula Poil and Dr C Balan participated in the meeting held.

Thus, the Marxist, Leninist, and all communist categories, Mohammedan and “secular” groups have ganged up, obviously to do something.

Kannur political and communal murders Graphics-3

IUML and communists engaged in poltical murders in Kannur and other places: It is interesting to note how IHC is regularly dominated with politicians, that too, with fundamentalist Mohammedans.  Just in May 2019, when CPM Kannur district secretary M V Jayarajan demanded that Muslim women who queue up in polling booths should remove their face veil, Abdul Karim Cheleri said the communal mindset of the CPM has been exposed through Jayarajan’s statement[5]. LDF candidate P K Sreemathi too supported the demand[6]. “Jayarajan had raised the issue to prevent bogus voting. It’s not an anti-religious statement, said Sreemathi[7]. However, IUML does not want others to interfere with their religious sanctions[8]. Moreover, for IHC how these politicians are coming together is not, as otherwise, their party cadres have been involved in killing each other. Just two months back, the same Abdul Karim Cheleri accused CPI (M) involved in killing their cadre accusing another Jayarajan[9]. Isahak, 38, was allegedly hacked to death at Tanur by a group of unidentified assailants with suspected links to the ruling Left[10]. Meanwhile, the IUML alleged that there was a CPI(M) conspiracy behind the attack.[11] “Former Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan came to the area a few days ago and held a meeting where some of the culprits also took part,” a Youth League leader alleged.

How K.K.N.Kurupp narrates about the murderous Kannur heritage: The culture of bloodshed in Kannur, which continues even today despite ritualistic political handshakes to give peace a chance, is probably as old as the folk traditions of the land, its myths and history[12]. From the myths of theyyams that glorified the subaltern gods to the Vadakkanpattu (ballads) and the revolt against the British by Pazhassi Raja, there are plenty of stories where people shed blood with pride. But in the age of democracy why is this place obsessed with martyrdom? Is it because a martyr is a political investment? From the murder of RSS leader Vadikkal Ramakrishnan in Thalassery in 1968 (considered to be the first political murder) to killing of E Santhosh (another RSS activist) in January 2017, nearly 186 people have been killed here over the past five decades. The north Malabar region always had a tradition of violence right from the days of feudalism, said historian K K N Kurup[13]. “If the reason is politics, why is it not there in other parts of India or Kerala? Why they practice this camouflage battle strategy here only?“ he asked. He felt that this was the continuation of a tribal character though their act of vendetta is political in nature. “If African tribes involve in fights to assert their racial supremacy, here it is for political supremacy. Both reflect the same attitude. I feel they have the element of the `suicidal fighter’ in this age of democracy ,“ he said.

Kannur political and communal murders Graphics-2

K.K.N.Kurupp – refuted for his linking traditional pattus and dances to violence: However, it is wrong to link the gory culture in politics with Vadakkanpattu, said kalaripayattu exponent P Meenakshi Amma. “The fights narrated in Vadakkanpattu had a basic element of ethics. In the political battlefield, bloodshed is mostly an act of vendetta. They get involved in it because they have no knowledge about the tradition of kalaripayattu and Vadakkanpattu,“ she said. But this political violence cannot be isolated from the folk tradition of the place that often told the story of the lower-caste victims, said researcher T Sasidharan, who heads the political science department of Kannur S N College. He had exhaustively researched the history of political violence in Kannur and wrote a book titled `Radical Politics of Kannur’. “When we look at the socioeconomic aspect of the murders and violence in Kannur, it can be seen that nearly 65% of the martyrs, irrespective of politics, belong to the thiyya community. A majority of them are economically-backward,“ he said. Though the murder of Ramakrishnan is considered to be the beginning of political murders in Kannur, the roots of political violence began with the emergence of Praja Socialist Party (PSP) in the 1950s under P R Kurup, he said. There were clashes between PSP and the Communist Party in Panur and with the disintegration of PSP in the late 60s, the violence took a new turn when its workers joined Jana Sangh.

Jayaraj with Madani poster-IHC
It was only the political competition between the Communists and the Mohammedans: Though political rivalry is said to the reason for the violence here, the political character is fast vanishing and `quotation culture’ is making inroads, said K P Mohanan, a local political observer who has closely followed the culture of bloodshed in Kannur. Though murders have been an ongoing process, incidents such as the attack on CPM district secretary P Jayarajan on August 25, 1999 worsened the situation. This ultimately led to the murder of Yuva Morcha leader KT Jayakrishnan on December 1, 1999, and a spate of murders followed, he added. “It is a fact that Kannur shows a tribal character when it comes to murder, and that is why if one person is killed, his political tribe target the rival elsewhere. But, the tragedy is that quite often the poor working-class people coming home after their day’s work are the victims,“ he said. Incidentally, while murders in the past took place in broad daylight, now it is committed at night and this has given rise to the impression that some `third parties’ and quotation gangs ¬ without any political commitment ¬ have replaced the political warriors, claimed residents.

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – Highly politicized and spoiled show – The Governor targeted! [2]

Pandal where inaugural session was held-changed

The IHC coterie enjoying the life: The delegates [historians, researchers, students] were struggling to settle down at different places, the elite, eminent, emeritus categories were enjoying life in star hotels, star-category hotels, A/C rooms etc. When thousands of  “delegates” were waiting for the transport, to be sent by the IHC host, these “babus” were dropped at the venue in cars, cabs and special vehicles. And these people only have been talking about equity, equality and such terminology. Definitely, they have been enjoying the life at IHC proceedings before and after retirement. After EC meeting, they used to have good food provided at the place of course with drinks also and this has been the practice since 1980s, as observed by our team attending the conference. They have some 50-100 known people and they engage their friends in the EC and other office barriers so that none would question their activities.

Ramachandran Kadannappalli IHC

Highlights of the Session:  The circular declared that, Professor A. K. Bagchi (Kolkata) would take over from Professor Irfan Habib, officiating General President as the General President of the session and deliver his address at the inaugural session.

  • ‘Women in India: Reconstructing Women’s History’ [Aligarh Historians Society]

However, there were many confusions and problems due to demonstrations etc.

Inuagural session , 28-12-2019 IHC

The inaugural function on 28-12-2019: On 28th morning, the inaugural function was arranged in a samiana with a lot of security arrangement. The space was divided into five categories:

  1. The stage, where the invited signatories and VIPs sat
  2. RHS from the stage for the media
  3. LHS from the stage for the IHC office barriers and VIPs.
  4. RHS from the stage – for ladies,
  5. LHS from the stage for gentlemen.

With frisking and checking of bags etc., they were allowed inside. Repeatedly, announcements were made that “when Governor comes, all should stand up” and so on! In fact, one historian was commenting, “Are we school children?………….” The Governor and others came and occupied. The card [inaugural ceremony] issued by Popinath Ravindran and P. Mohandas, mentioned the dignitaries as follows:

Prof Gopinath Ravindran, VC, Kannur University

Sri Biju Kandakkai, Member Syndicate.

Sri K. Sudhakaran, M.P, Lok Sabha.

Sri K. K. Ragesh, M.P., Rajya Sabha.

Sri Ramachandran Kadannappalli, Hon’ble minister for ports, museums, archaeology and archives.

Prof Amiya Kumar Bagchi

Prof Irfan Habib

Sri Arif Mohammad Khan, Hon’ble Governor of Kerala.

Ifran Habib heckled Governer

How the politics spoiled the inaugural function: Prof Gopinath Ravindran, VC, Kannur University, welcomed the Governor, Minister, MP, and other VIPs.

Sri Biju Kandakkai, Member Syndicate lamented that the funds to IHC had been dwindling down. Actually, it is not known as to why they should worry about the funds when they had already collected Rs. 70 lakhs as delegate fees. It has to be verified whether the VIP groups from JNU, AMU, DU etc., had been paying delegate fees or not, because they get maximum comforts etc. suppose, 100 VIPs do not pay, but enjoy means, Rs 10 lalkhs would be wasted from the collected funds. Ironically, he spoke in highly Sanskritized Malayalam. He stressed that regional history should be given importance. The rewiting of textbooks should be stopped.

Sri K. K. Ragesh, M.P., Rajya Sabha,  CPI(M) explained how Kannur martyrs played a crucial role in the freedom struggle. He pointed out that British hanged many from the Malabar region. Then, suddenly, he turned to political issues and started opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act and so on. He started interpreting that the constitutional provisions were attacked. The secular fabric of the country was attacked and universities targeted. Though certain section of Indian did not participate in the freedom movement, they were posing as freedom fighters. History has to be written properly.

Sri Ramachandran Kadannappalli, Hon’ble minister for ports, museums, archaeology and archives pointed out that IHC has thousands of members. India has 5000 years of history starting with the Indus Valley Civilization.

Prof Amiya Kumar Bagchi started reading from his printed material. As he was old, he was struggling to read also.

Irfan Habib misbehaving with governer-2

The response of Sri Arif Mohammad Khan, Hon’ble Governor of Kerala: K.K. Ragesh. The Rajya Sabha MP Ragesh’s speech caught the attention of the governor as he was speaking in English, unlike the other dignitaries on the stage. “When he heard Ragesh referring to contemporary issues, the governor asked for a pen and pad to take notes of his speech,” says Kandakkai, a former central committee member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI)[1]. After Dr Amiya Kumar Bagchi, the newly elected chair of the Indian History Congress concluded his address, Khan started his speech. (Bagchi was allowed to speak for 30 minutes and Khan for 31 minutes, as the governor should be given more time than any other guests as per the protocol.) Actually, the Governor proceeded to address, but, suddenly he was asked to sit, as the newly elected president had to address! Ironically, the governor had to inaugurate the function to continue. The governor did not read the written text but opted to go extempore to respond to the earlier speakers. At one moment, he personally addressed Ragesh, telling him that it was a rebuttal of his comments[2].

Irfan Habib tried to prevent Governer-6

He differentiated between Rajya sabha MP and Lok sabha MP: “As a person who entered Parliament at the age of 26, I cannot but react when confronted with political issues,” he said[3]. “I became a governor by taking an oath to protect the Constitution and speak for it. I have quit positions when I felt the Constitution was under threat.” “Please don’t give too much importance to them. Please take your places,” he told those who had stood up in protest. “You have no right to create violence or disturbance. You can’t silence me with protests. You can’t shout me down. You have come with an agenda,” Khan said, but by then he could barely be heard over the slogans. “I came to know about the harassment that (former) Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria faced because he is a Hindu,” he said, alluding to retired fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar’s allegation that Kaneria had been a victim of discrimination from some team-mates[4].

Irfan Habib tried to prevent Governer-4

Irfan Habib became belligerent moving towards the Governor: “I sent a renowned Malayali writer on my behalf to call those who were protesting, for a discussion, but they said that they were here to protest and not for discussion. So I said that when you shut the doors of discussion then it creates an environment of violence and hate followed by a sentence of Gandhiji[5]. The moment I said this, Irfan Habibji got up from his seat and wanted to charge me,” Khan told ANI here.”My ADC stopped him and then he (Habib) went behind the sofa and came from the other side. He was stopped by my security, ADC and others. Since he stood on the stage, some protesters created a ruckus there,” Khan added[6].

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – Highly politicized and spoiled show [1]

January 1, 2020

The 80th session of Indian History Congress held at Kannur University – Highly politicized and spoiled show [1]

Kannur university hosted IHC

Delegate fees, accommodation etc: The 80th session of Indian History Congress was held at the Kannur University Campus. On 27th itself, many delegates, evidently from long distance, from northern states started arriving by various trains.  For varied reasons, there was a delay at every point and slowly, the registration went on and then, they were accommodated at different lodges and hotels situated near and as well as 30 to 40 kms away from the Kannur University campus. Rs 3500/- was charged and many felt, it was excessive. The kit was not given, as they were not ready. Moreover, the accommodation given was not satisfactory. It is evident that they were impartial in allotting accommodation to delegates and thus tried to confuse with fee structure and other conditions as follows. This is mentioned because the circulars of the IHC had threatened the delegates with different circulars. One read as follows[1]: “IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS”:

  1. Last date for receipt of Delegate Fee: The last date for the receipt of delegate fee (Rs 3,500) is 1 st December, 2019 by DD, and 20/12/2019 by online payment. Delegates are requested not to delay payments of delegate fee beyond the last date because accommodation will be arranged on the basis of the delegate fees already received. If any delegate, despite this plea, arrives at the venue without payment of delegate fee in time, he or she will have to find accommodation on his or her own, while paying us Rs. 1500/- for the kit and meals. Alternatively, the member can pay Rs.5000/- as delayed delegate fee, provided we can find accommodation, without guaranteeing it[2].
  2. Delegate Fee Remittance: Delegate fee of Rs. 3500/- can be paid via the online registration cum payment link https://forms.gle/gZTQf6eveRrf8oDU6 (credit card, debit card, RTGS, NEFT, Paytm) or by Demand Draft. If any delegate would prefer to make his or her own arrangements for accommodation, and only requires the kit and the food facilities, the payment will be Rs. 1500/-, as stated above.
  3. All payments must be in the name of “Local Treasurer” payable at SBI, Fort Road Branch, Kannur-1, if you are paying by Demand Draft; you can fill the online form and insert your Demand Draft details, and send the DD to the address given below with your membership no., full name, and other details. Or, you may fill in the form sent with the Local Secretary’s circular and speed-post or courier a copy of it with your Demand Draft to “Dr P. Mohandas, Local Secretary, 80th Session, Indian History Congress Organizing Committee, HRDC Buildings, Kannur University Campus, Kannur 670002 – KERALA.”
  4. Please do not forget to mention your name, mobile number, and membership number at the back of the DD. The Local Secretary will NOT accept cheque payments of any kind, including multi-city cheques. We also strongly recommend the online payment option.
  5. The confirmation of the payment of the delegate fee must reach the Local Secretary not later than 28 November 2019.
  6. Reception: The Reception Desk in the Kannur University campus, Thavakkara, Kannur, Kerala, will be active from the morning of 27th December, 2019, to 28th December afternoon. The Help Desk at Kannur Railway Station and Kannur Airport will be active from December 27th morning to 28th afternoon. While transport will not be provided to the University, the volunteers will be at the Station and Airport to help arrange for transport.

All these show that how they have been very meticulous in collecting money from the delegates, but, they were not sincere in reciprocating by giving reasonably good accommodation, food etc., as could be known from the subsequent events.

Kannur university hosted IHC-5,000 fees

The academic session, paper presentation etc: On 27th, after registration done from morning, the kit was not given. When the delegates came for dinner by 7 pm, message was sent to all to bring “food token” coming for dinner by 7 pm. Their timing was horrible, perhaps, within a minute all 3000 delegates get their kits and come there with token for food. Naturally, many delegates did not get their kit-bag, as some of them left their fee-receipts in the rooms themselves. Initially, the people at the “Food-tent” were adamant in their attitude by insisting tokens. One person was not agreeing with the on-line registration with accommodation details and other messages received in cell-phone and shown to him. He was so stubborn and posed and as a strict disciplinarian, but, later he was allowing others who did not pay delegate fees also. Coming to paper presentation also, they were not definite about, as no “list of papers” was given in the kit. When the asked on 30th morning, surprisingly, the declared that all copies were exhausted. Really, it is a wonder how thousands of copies could vanish. The fact could be that purposely, they printed fewer copies. Thus, the brought out one[3] “Supplementary paper list.” Then, another “Supplementary list-2” was released[4]. Then, “Final list” was released[5]. So, it is not known, why this confusion and all. It is evident that the person-in-charge of papers received had not done his job properly. Yet, the sectional presidents were harassing the paper presenters without following the sl.no.order.

IHC, the kit

The so-called kit: The kit is nothing but a small cloth bag containing a pencil and sharpener with a scribbling pad. Of course a souvenir and a booklet “Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II and Tuhfat ul Mujahideen – A Revisit to a Historical Text: After 437 years” of Dr K.K.N.Kurup. There was a program card about inauguration.

  1. The booklets of addresses sectional presidents,
  2. list of papers,
  3. pen and
  4. other required materials were not found.

Really, it is surprising that for payment of Rs.3500/-, the kit given had been in this way. Moreover, that cloth bag also “complementary” from one “………………….college…………” and Yono by SBI. Therefore, it is not known how this type of kit was conceived and finalized to be distributed to the delegates.

Kannur university hosted IHC, proceeding volume

About the proceeding volumes: Their circular declared, “It is expected that the printed volume of the Proceedings of the 79th session (Barkatullah University, Bhopal) will be ready (both in the form of a printed copy and CD) for free distribution among members such as were on rolls at the 79th session) at the forthcoming (80th ) session at the Kannur University, Kerala”. However, the CD was not given. Old copies of previous proceeding volumes were brought and dumped near registration counter. Actually, many life members are not attending regularly, but, they are not getting their volumes. Earlier, if Rs 20/-. 40/- etc., were sent by M.O, the life members used to get the volumes by Registered book post. Therefore, it is not known, how the volumes are sold, without giving copies to life members.

Kannur university hosted IHC, food not upto the mark

The food provided to the delegates: Though, the organizers asked about “Food” veg or non-veg, it was evident that they did not care about the “veg” food takers. When six or seven tables were with non-veg items, only one table was with veg-food. The veg-food quality was very normal and the items were not prepared properly. The sambar and rasam were not up to the mark. The items were too salty, sour and nor palatable also. As usual, the non-veg historians invaded veg also, looted and the veg-historians had to keep quiet. However, hundreds of historians and delegates were shouting for “Azadi / freedom” for many things. Here, they were contradicting and violating the rights of others. Above all, that “dictator” was worried and particular in asking for token!

Kannur university hosted IHC, office barriers

The attitude of the office barriers, their engaged volunteers etc: Any simple onlooker could notice that the IHC engaged volunteers, that too, young girls had been so indifferent, callous and uninterested with the delegates of aged, coming from different places etc. They made others waiting, or going from counter to counter without any reason. Shockingly, nearly 50 such volunteers were sitting in a row with tables and chairs. The two young ladies were asking the delegates to wait for 10 minutes for every 20 and 30 minutes. They claimed that the registration had to be done online by them. Thus, the delegates were made to stand there for nearly two hours and then they started sending messages through phones. However, one had to wait for another message for confirmation and then for accommodation. The accommodation also was not provided, though, they claimed, it would come as message. After asking a dozen times only, they provided and then again had to wait for vehicle, as the places were 20 to 30 kms away from the university campus.

Why Leela Samson has been shrouded with controversies wherever she went?

December 16, 2019

Why Leela Samson has been shrouded with controversies wherever she went?

Leela Samson booked by CBI

Secularism versus communalism: In India, because of the “secularism” cult, misnomer and handling of the issues with deceit, many times the real secular issues are communalized and the secular ones also slowly communalized. The Mohammedan Khilafat, Muslim appeasement, Jihadi manipulations and ultimately ISIS holy war, and today’s burning of trains and railway stations by the Mohammedans prove the disease. Certain groups under the guise of secularism, have always been creating problems in India running riots. Leela Samson, in spite of her talents in Bharata Natyam, unfortunately, indulged in certain unprofessional activities in Kalaskhetra proving her inbuilt communal bias.  Being minorities, it is intriguing and shocking to know why and how the Mohammedans and Christians intrude and infiltrate government organizations and institutions to harass, affect and exploit majority Hindus by all means. Here, though Leela Samson is considered as an individual, the issues around her expose serious issues with ramifications.

Leela Samson, Priyanka Vadra

Leela Samson has been close to Sonia family: Samson is known for her proximity to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty of the Indian National Congress, as she was the dance tutor of Priyanka Vadra. Samson held six key positions in the 10 years of Congress-led United Progressive Alliance regime. Many papers including the Indian Express alleged favouritism regarding her appointment as the chairperson of the censor board by UPA govt in 2011: Leela Samson’s appointment as chairperson of the Censor Board has raised the question as to whether the well-known Bharatanatyam dancer will have time to devote to her new assignment. In 2010, Samson was appointed chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, another prestigious position. The academy is the apex body for the performing arts. Samson is also ex-officio head of the south zone cultural centre. Apart from these commitments, she has a full-time job as director of Kalakshetra in Chennai. Samson, who was once Priyanka Gandhi’s dance teacher, has no particular connection with the world of cinema. After her appointment, Samson candidly admitted that she seldom watches films.

Leela Samson with MSG censor board

Censor Board controversy questioned her credibility: Samson’s tenures at Kalakshetra, Sangeet Natak Akademi and the censor board were mired with many controversies amid allegations of corruption, illegal appointments and arbitrary awarding of contracts, financial irregularities, Samson was criticised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad when she passed the 2014 Aamir Khan-starrer movie PK without any cuts, even after two board members resigned after it was granted certification, due to content allegedly designed to ridicule Hindu religious philosophy and hurt Hindu sentiments. Veteran Bollywood actor and a former chairperson of the censor board Anupam Kher criticised Samson for playing politics by making partisan allegations while tendering her resignation. This criticism was made highlighting the history of CBFC under her leadership which agreed to make cuts in Entertainment after protests by Muslim groups[30] and also agreed to make cuts in Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal after protests by Christian groups, personally assuring them that “necessary action had been taken”.

Leela Samson at Kalakhetra

Leela Samson involved in controversy from the beginning – 2005[1]: Leela Samson’s sudden exit as director of  Kalakshetra Foundation came despite the fact that she had the backing of the government to continue in the post. While Samson stated in her resignation that the Union government and the foundation’s governing board did not want her to continue in the post after the age of 60, the Union government had, in fact, defended her in court over the past year, even disregarding advice from the additional solicitor-general in the matter and filing a counter-affidavit to protect her post. In June 2011, C S Thomas, a retired teacher at Kalakshetra, had filed a writ petition in the Madras high court challenging the legality of Samson remaining director of the foundation after the age of 60, the statutory retirement age for Central government employees. After she resigned on April 12, 2012, Samson said the issue had come up in a board meeting on April 10 and she saw no reason to stay on in the post if she did not have the support of the ministry, the chairman and the board[2].

UPA supported her legally: Following a counter affidavit by the Union ministry of culture, the high court instructed the additional solicitor-general of India to seek instruction in the matter and inform the court whether the retirement age of 60 applied to the post of the director of Kalakshetra Foundation. In response, the undersecretary to the government of India had informed him that “Leela Samson, director, Kalakshetra Foundation should have retired at the age of 60 years even though the age of retirement is not mentioned in the Kalakshetra Foundation Act, or in the recruitment rules for the post of director nor in the order of appointment (notification) dated February 28, 2005”. However, in a show of support to Samson, the Centre disregarded this instruction and filed a counter affidavit in the high court in August 2011 stating that the post of director of Kalakshetra had to be treated differently from that of a government employee. “Leela Samson was appointed to the post of the director through a search committee after the government took over the institute and her appointment was different from that of the other employees. So the Central government rules did not apply to her,” said a source in the culture ministry. Samson filed a counter in the HC in July 2011, stating that she had been “appointed to the post of the director of Kalakshetra Foundation on the basis that she was a former student of the school and had been taught by Rukmini Devi, the founder”. According to the Kalakshetra Act, appointments to the post of a director are governed by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Department of Culture, Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai, (Director) Recruitment Rules, 2002. Although the rules specify 55 as the upper age limit for a person to assume the post of director, they do not mention a retirement age.

In 2019, CBI booked case: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case of corruption and criminal breach of trust against Padma Shree awardee Leela Samson, former director of Kalakshetra Foundation, and four others for financial irregularities in the renovation of Koothambalam Auditorium on its wooded Chennai campus[3]. The CBI FIR, based on a complaint from secretary and the chief vigilance officer of the union ministry of culture, names four suspects and says they spent Rs 62.20 lakh more than the estimated amount of Rs 7.01 crore on the project[4].

The accused persons are –

  1. Leela Samson,
  2. TS Murthi, the then chief accounts officer at Kalakshetra Foundation,
  3. S Ramachandran, accounts officer and
  4. V Srinivasan, an engineer at the Foundation, besides and
  5. Ravi Neelakantan, proprietor of M/s CARD and
  6. M/s Chennai Engineers[5].

CBI received the complaint dated May 31, 2017, about ‘unfruitful expenditure’ of Rs 7.01 crore made on the renovation of Koothambalam Auditorium at Kalakshetra Foundation. It alleged that work order for the renovation was awarded by the Foundation officials at a higher rate through the architect-consultant ‘Centre for Architectural Research and Design’ (CARD) without following the General Financial Rules (GRF)[6].

Leela Samson at Kalakhetra, questioned 3 crore fraud

From CAG finding, the fraud got exposed: The Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) audited the expenditure of the Foundation and brought out various lapses in executing the renovation works. It was also pointed out that the renovation works were undertaken without formal sanction of the governing board and finance committee of the Foundation. This led to a huge controversy after which Samson resigned from the post of director and member of the civil works panel in 2012. Thereafter, the matter was referred to the CVC of the Ministry. The Central Public Works Department team in Chennai inspected the work in 2016 and assessed that the Foundation had spent approximately Rs 62.20 lakh more than the estimated amount. The team also found that the contracts were awarded at a higher rate and payments made to the contractors. In 2017, the vigilance department of the ministry forwarded the complaint to the CBI after which a preliminary enquiry was carried out.

Leela Samson at Kalakhetra, questioned

The auditorium controversy: Samson was the Director of the Foundation between May06, 2005, and April 30, 2012. It was felt in 2006 that the auditorium built by the Foundation in 1985 needed renovation, they said. The project aimed to upgrade the sound system of the Koothambalam auditorium, built-in 1985, followed by civil engineering works, electrical works, air conditioning and architectural features, the CBI FIR said. The 33rd Governing Body meeting held in 2009 decided to form a civil works advisory committee and PT Krishnan, Leela Samson and Madhavi Mudgal were to prepare necessary estimation based on the recommendations of the Governing Board, it said[7]. The civil works committee appointed CARD as consultant architect in 2010 which gave contracts for 28 renovation works to five contractors while the committee also selected some contractors, it said[8]. The ministry alleged in the complaint that the open tender process was not followed in awarding the contracts. It also alleged that Samson failed to apprise the non-official members of the Works Committee about the GFR norms and inform the Works Committee about the CAG Inspection Report received in August 2011[9]. “Instead, approval of the Works Committee was obtained for two major expenditures in September and December 2011. She failed to place the CAG Inspection Report in the meeting of Finance Committee and General Body meeting held on January 23, 2012, and January 24, 2012, respectively and kept these bodies under dark,” the agency has alleged[10]. The FIR, citing reports, alleged even if there were only limited sources of supply of sophisticated equipment for sound, stage lighting, these were not justified in the file notings for resorting to limited tender, and hence there was no justification in not resorting to open bidding. She was allegedly responsible for the losses incurred by the Foundation on account of not opting for open tendering as also mandated by the General Body, it said.

Leela Samson PIL questioned 2012 India Today

Has propaganda war started?: Now again, secular categories could question the actions and proceedings as communal, as the Hindutwa government has been at the centre. Even, they could go to the extent of criticizing that the right-wing nazist and fascist forces have been trying to trample the human rights of the minorities. The rule of second term of NDA has started just now, but, the issues have been multiplied and problems created have been running riots. Instead of concentrating on the economic and other progressive issues, parliamentary debates have been becoming political platform speeches and emotions are whipped up based on race and linguistic fanaticism. How then, rulers could concentrate on the welfare of people as a whole?

Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Shanmuga Desiga Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal (1926-2019)

Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Shanmuga Desiga Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal (1926-2019)

Guru vanthanam

Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Shanmuga Desiga Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal: The 26th Gurumaha Sannidhanam of Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Shanmuga Desiga Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal passed away on Wednesday 04-12-2019[1]. He was 95[2]. The pontiff suffered from poor health due to old age[3]. The pontiff had been suffering from various illnesses in the past few years, so he already appointed Tiruvaiyaru Sri Kumaraswami Thambiran as his successor on February 1, 2017 and named him as Masilamani Desika Paramacharya Swamigal. When crores of worth of properties have been under his control, he could have received better treatment, eve at foreign countries, as the Dravidian politicians do here in Tamil Nadu, but, he died as a devotee of God Shiva taking treatment at a private hospital. Masilamani Desika Paramacharya Swamigal would be appointed as the 27th adheenam. His body will be laid to rest on Thursday 05-12-2019.

Dharmapura Adheenam, younger days-old photo

500 years old mutt has crores of worth of properties: Mutt sources said[4]. Over the past 48 years, the Gurumaha Sannidhanam administered 27 temples, including Vaidheeswaran Koil, Thirukadaiyur, Sirkazhi, Thiruvaiyaru, Thirubhavanam and Thirukkuvalai, that belonged to Dharmapuram Adheenam[5]. The Adheenam, which is more than 500 years old, also runs schools and colleges with about 10,000 students, the sources said[6]. The Adheenam has crores of worth of properties[7]. However, the lessors, tenants, and others have been enjoying the properties without payment of rent and lease amounts.  Not only that, they have filed hundreds of suits and cases in the District and high courts, just to dodge, evade and circumvent the rules to avoid payment. Ironically, most of them have been Saivites. “If Sivan property is misused, abused or encroached, his clan would be ruined,” has been the axiom among them, but, here in this context, they are not worried or bothered.

Dharmapura Adheenam, with Periyavar and Jeyandra

Adheenam promoted Tamil cause: Dharmapuram Adheenam, which is one of the largest adheenams, had given a great support to the growth of Tamil language[8].  500 years old mutt possess valuable palm-leaf books on Saiva philosophy, ethics, theology and other topics. Recently, there have been accusations that certain “group of Tamil scholars” entering mutts and stealing away such valuable palm-leaf books and selling aboard. Ironically, such accusations are made among themselves and therefore, there is a reason to believe that they might have engaged collectively and mutually, as the outcome money would take care of their sojourns. However, the Dravidian racist and linguistic fanatics have been spoiling the condition by intruding into the administration of mutts. The Adheenam was established around 500 years ago by Sri Guru Gnanasambandar and Sri Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal assumed charge as the 26th pontiff on November 12, 1971.

Dharmapura Adheenam, with Periyavar and Jeyandra Saraswati and others

Swamigal [1926-2019] had a long track of service in the mutt: The pontiff Gnanasambandar was born in Sirukattur near Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore district in 1926 and was administering the Guru Gnana Prachara Sabha until the appointment of the adheenam. The adheenam donated land for the construction of government buildings and the new bus stand. He had also announced to donate land for a medical college in Mayiladuthurai[9]. The pontiff played a key role against the appointment of Nithyananda Swami as the junior pontiff of Madurai Adheenam by gathering all the pontiffs to pass a resolution against the appointment[10]. Such polemics, unfortunately, suppressing the looting of temple properties by the Dravidian politicians and even Mohammedans.  His accommodating Christian M. Deivanayagam at the Mutt premises had been unfortunate. However, a refutation book was published to counter written by Vidwan Sri Arunai Vadivelu Mudaliar later in 1991.

In 2005, when the Tamil Nadu History Congress session was held, Swamiji stressed the importance and antiquity of Hindu religion etc. but, P. Jagadesan talked against that shocked most of the teachers of the AVC College and delegates.

Arunai vadivelu book

The affairs behind the publication of the book: Actually, when it was in the manuscript form, in 1988, one K. V. Ramakrishna Rao had gone to Tattuva Maiyam, Kanchipuram, met Sri Mudaliar and taken the manuscript. Then, he had met many publishers, but, they either did not take interest or refused to publish, as it was against the Christian propagandists. He even wrote to Saiva Mutts and “International Saiva Siddhanta Perumanram.” No response, only the last one responded through their advocate, T. N. Ramachandran. Years passed, his son Palaravayan came and took the typed manuscript from K. V. Ramakrishna Rao[11]. After much discussion and negotiation, in 1991, it was published by the Dhamapuri Adheenam. Here, also, T. N. Ramachandran asked K. V. Ramakrishna Rao one brief about the incidents happened to be included as last chapter, but, not included. Incidentally, when the book release function was held at the Saiva Siddhanta Permandram, Mylapore, he was not informed also! That was the attitude of the Hindus and Hindutawa guys. R. S. Narayanaswamy collected materials from him and published about it “Organizer,” the mouthpiece of RSS.

Sri Kumaraswamy Thambiran Swamigal succeeded: He has been named the successor to the head of Dharmapuram Adheenam in nearby Mayiladuthurai, one of the ancient Saivaite mutts in the country[12]. He was chosen by the head of the mutt 93-year old Sri Shanmugam Desiga Gnanasambandha Paramacharya Swamigal and was anointed as the junior pontiff at a ceremony held on 31-01-2017 morning, a mutt release said[13] said earlier on 30-01-2017. Thereafter, 52-year old Sri Kumaraswamy Thambiran Swamigal would be known as Sri Masillamani Desiga Gnanasambanda Swamigal, the senior pontiff said[14]. The adheenam, headquartered at Dharmapuram in Mayiladuthurai in the district, is more than 500 years old and has control over 27 Saivaite temples, runs several educational institutions and has other properties in various parts of the country[15]. Gnanasambandha Paramacharya Swamigal is the 26th head of the mutt[16]. The junior pontiff-designate Kumaraswamy Thambiran Swamigal is a native of Erukathampuliyur village in Cuddalore district and holds a doctorate in Tamil. He has published more than 200 research papers in Tamil literature and has briefly served as an Associate Professor in Thirupanandal Kasi Mutt College in Kumbakonam before joining the Dharmapuram Mutt in 2000[17]. He is the Chief Editor of Saivaite magazine ‘Gnanasambandham’ published by the Dharmapuram Adheenam.

Fish constructing perfect geometric pattern on the seafloor: Resembling Mahameru, connected with creation and procreation

Fish constructing perfect geometric pattern on the seafloor: Resembling Mahameru, connected with creation and procreation

Puffer fish mate- where foud, Japan

Fish making geometric pattern on the seafloor [1995]: About fish making perfect geometrical pattern in three dimensions on the seafloor, many news items, articles and research papers appeared in dailies, journals and research-sites during 1995. By and large, they repeated the same narrative with the common inputs received from the Japanese. Though some captioned their reports with “sacred circles,” they did not explain what that “sacredness” is about and ho the fish could understand it and convert into perfect geometric designs with its mouth and fins working hardly with labour. The brain of the fish of Amami Oshima area must have been so developed to conceive and apply such geometric pattern with simple burrowing through the sand.

Fish creating a geometrical pattern-01

Pufferfish made such geometric pattern: In 1995, divers noticed a beautiful, strange circular pattern on the seafloor off Japan, and soon after, more circles were discovered nearby[1]. Some likened these formations to “underwater crop circles.” The geometric formations mysteriously came and went, and for more than a decade, nobody knew what made them—or what was creating them[2].  The marine department, underwater explorers and divers started investigating. Finally, the creator of these remarkable formations was found[3]: a newly discovered species of pufferfish. They found that these fish make such a pattern and they took videography of making. Further study showed these small pufferfish, which spend about ten days carefully constructing and decorating the structures to attract mates.

Fish creating a geometrical pattern-0

Fish creating 18 times more size that of itself:  Males laboriously flap their fins as they swim along the seafloor, resulting in disrupted sediment and amazing circular patterns[4]. Although the fish are only about 12 centimeters (5 inches) long, the formations they make measure about 2 meters (7 feet) in diameter[5]. In other words, it was creating 18 times more size that of itself. Thus, how it could meticulously imagine and convert its labour into such a perfect pattern has to be thought of and appreciated. Before the female fish arrive to inspect his handiwork, the male forms irregular patterns in the fine sand particles of the central circle. He also decorates the peaks of the outer portion with shell and coral fragments[6]. This is very interesting, as the fish carefully lifts such items and takes to the edges of the pattern and place at points carefully. When the circles are finished, females come to inspect them, rather attracted towards them. A female will swim into the center to signal approval and the male bites on her cheek to start the mating process[7]. The male swims over, snatches the female’s cheek and the two creatures begin to mate, however, the process only lasts for a few seconds. Once finished, the female swims off – never to return[8].

Fish creating a geometrical pattern-1

Pattern Develop independently: The fish spends about six weeks building the structure that is 20 times its size, which also acts as a way to slow down the current in order to protect the eggs laid its mate. The white-spotted pufferfish is about three inches long and adorned with white spots on its back and silvery-white spots on its abdomen[9]. If they like what they see, they reproduce with the males, said Hiroshi Kawase, the curator of the Coastal Branch of Natural History Museum and Institute in Chiba, Japan. But nobody knows exactly what the females are looking for in these circles or what traits they find desirable, Kawase told LiveScience. [See Video of Pufferfish Making Seafloor Circles]. Once the female splits, though, it’s the male who does the parental chores: He remains in the nest until the eggs hatch six days later. However, the reproduction with such geometrical pattern is significant. Afterward, the male looks for a nearby spot to start the nest-making process all over again, which is a mystery of its own[10]:

Fish creating a geometrical pattern-2

Mystery not solved: Why spend all that time and energy building a brand-new nest? The scientists think it has something to do with the fine sand particles that make up the smooth center of the circles[11]. (Read “Africa’s Mysterious ‘Fairy Circles’ Explained.”) The males use up all the fine sand within the radius of their nest during a single spawning cycle. To construct another nest, they have to look elsewhere for a site with more fine sand particles. In any case, they could not find any reason for making pattern, leaving it to disappear and making a new one for further activities. When men and machines have been doing such job, it is marvelous and amazing that fish have been doing.

Fish creating a geometrical pattern-3

Possible explanation with Indian traditional narratives: With Indian traditional narrative of “Machavatara” Fish incarnation of Vishnu, the pattern can be explained. Of course, the European Indologists have also studied about it when they were making a comparative study of world literature. The geometrical pattern in two and three dimensions resemble Sri Chakra and Mahameru. These figures are considered as basis for the creation of all living and non-living objects and lives of the Cosmos, planets and earth. Mathematically, all numbers have been evolved out of 0. So also geometrically, all figures have been evolved out of  “.” i.e, point[12].

Puffer fish -how it decorates

The Sri Chakra is a configuration of nine triangles, five triangles with apex downwards superimposed on four triangles with apex upwards. It consists of nine chakras. There are nine Chakreshwaris, nine classes of yoginis and nine mudras. Like the ninefold of Sri Chakra, the mantra is also nine fold as it contains only nine letters. The masters are nine in number. The human body has nine apertures. Therefore, identity is sought to be established between the Chakra, Deity, Mantra, Guru and the sadhaka’s body.

Puffer fish mate

So also Mahameru. It starts with Bindu, dot, zero or small globe. The smallest circle that could be drawn without any radius. Then comes the next possible geometrical figure that could be drawn with two figures is impossible and therefore, the three sides figure is a triangle. So with the triangle, more geometrical figures are formed in three dimensions with 14 layers with specific geometrical figures. Vishnu takes macha-kurma-varaha-narasimha-vamana-parasurama-rama-balarama-krishna-kalki ten avataras. Fish-tortoise-boar-dwarf- axe man-iron man- plough man – fighting man – horseman – these categorizations indeed explains the evolution of man from unicellular to multicellular and also, implying the development progress of lithic and metallic cultures.

The creation of chair in the name name of Robert Caldwell at the Tamil University is repetitive, excessive and wasting resources.

July 25, 2019

The creation of chair in the name name of Robert Caldwell at the Tamil University is repetitive, excessive and wasting resources.

Caldwell, CM panneerselvam

Chair for Robert Caldwell To create awareness at Tamil University: To create awareness on the works of Tamil scholar Robert Caldwell, the State will establish a Tamil chair in his name at Tamil University[1]. To strengthen the infrastructure at Tamil University, Rs 20 crore would be allocated. And taxpayers do not know how this 20 crores would promote Tamil or Tamil University at Tanjore! Thus, the CM made announcement under rule 110 of the TN legislature[2]. Why suddenly, this idea has come or who forced to create such chair is not known. In all Universities, Tamil department has been functioning for more than 40 to 70 years engaging in the same work and research into Dravidian languages. Recently, crores of rupees have been granted to Harvard University for the creation of Tamil chair there[3]. This has also been questioned by many, as it involves crores of money to be spent there. Moreover, already, accusations have been started involving scam and all[4]. There has been International Institute for Tamil Studies working in Taramani campus.

Tamil University

When Tamil University is meant for Tamil, why Caldwell there?: The Tamil University has been created exclusively for the purpose of promotion of Tamil language, literature and related subjects. Therefore, creation of a chair in the name of Robert Caldwell, at the Tamil University appears to be repetitive, excessive and wasting resources. Instead concentrating and doing research of Tamil language, literature and related subjects, it might be focused on Robert Caldwell, his missionary activities and so on. Moreover, in Tamil Nadu, already, there has been an issue that he disparaged the Shanar community and now, Nadars have been criticizing him for such communal bias. Of course, it happened, the moment his book was published, released in Madras[5] and the contents known to the people of Tamil Nadu in 1949.  As there was opposition, it was withdrawn from India. However, next year, revised edition was published in London[6].

200 caldwell tirunelveli function

Church supported researches and celebrations in Tamil Nadu and politicization: The 200th memorial day of Caldwell was celebrated only with the request of Bishop Christudass, Tirunalveli CSI in 2014[7]. Earlier in 1987, there was a controversy about a book released by the International Institute for Tamil Studies working in Taramani campus. It turned out that the controversial Bishop R. Arulappa only sponsored such seat to facilitate one M. Deivanayagam.  R. Arulappa was involved in a case where he gave lakhs of money to Acharya Paul to manufacture and fabricate fake palmleaf books and copper plates. To safe face, he came to compromise and settled the case out of court[8]. Thus, the Christian intrusion into Tamil Nadu politics has been controversial, communal and disturbing. The recent cruel comments of Ezra Sargunam to attack Hindus bleeding could be taken into account[9]. In other words, such celebrations should have been voluntary or with the popular demand or wishes of the public. But, because of politicization, some sort of minority appeasement or forceful celebration thrusted on public should not be there. After all, public money is spent and they should get some benefit out of such celebrations. On the contrary, such biased, communal and parochial celebrations create unpleasant feeling among the suffered people. The Nadars have already openly come out with their protests and books[10].

Caldwell on Shanars, Nadars

Caldwell’s disparaging book on Shanars / Nadars: In 2019, a book published also resulted in controversy over the Shanar / Nadaras[11]. In 2016, when CBSE brought out books, one of such books contained remarks against the Shanar women. The section — “Caste Conflict and Dress Change” — touched upon the strict social codes regarding food and dress in India in the past. The textbook says: “In May 1822, women of the Shanar caste were attacked by Nairs in public places in the southern princely state of Travancore, for wearing a cloth across their upper bodies. Over subsequent decades, a violent conflict over dress codes ensued.” The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has removed from a social science textbook a section on the fight for the right of the so-called lower caste Nadar women of Travancore to cover their breasts, after objections were raised about certain ‘derogatory’ references to them.

Why Tamil Nadu Government succumb to the communalism of the Christians?: Under such circumstances, the creation of chairs for persons with controversies have to be avoided. As wealthy Nadars now could create a chair against the controversial aspects of Robert Caldwell, as he came here to convert the people and this fat has been duly recorded in the TN government website itself[12]. The thesis, anti-thesis and synthesis could produce results, but, here, in controversies and controversial issues, there would be more heat that could lead to undesirable effects. Instead of allowing it under the guise of any principle would not bring anything good to society under prevailing conditions.
